ARCHIVED How To Convince Someone!
par18 replied to annie76's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My experience has been that the majority of people with Celiac related symptoms will go to any length to eliminate every thing else first before finally coming to the realization that this may be their problem. The diet itself is a test but seems to be passed over in favor of the more expensive blood/biopsy procedures first. I have said it before that there... -

par18 replied to Elcamino's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, I guess my question to you is why do you need the endorsement of a medical professional to at least give the diet a try. If you do try it and it does not work then to me that would be reason to maybe test for something else. Trying the diet is "free" as opposed to the expensive testing. If however you do try the diet and it helps and then decide to... -
ARCHIVED Two Tests Two Diff Results!
par18 replied to Rosewynde's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The only test I feel that matters is the diet response. If excluding gluten makes you feel better then why waste any more money on testing. If you continue to get negative results on the testing but can only find relief going gluten free then what are you going to do. You can call it what you want. None one in my family had any history of Celiac but that... -
ARCHIVED Wednesday Is The Day.. How To Start
par18 replied to lob6796's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Cold turkey is exactly the method I took. I had a ham and swiss on a kiaser roll for lunch and as soon as I finished the GI called and gave me the news. That was over 2 years ago and to my knowledge I have not had any gluten since. I say that because I have had none of my previous symptoms and would like to keep it that way. I have never been tempted to see... -
ARCHIVED Are Blue Diamond Nut-thins Safe?
par18 replied to bakinghomesteader's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have eaten them with no problems. When I first started this diet a couple of years ago I was so paranoid that if a label indicated something like shared lines I would not have even tried a lot of products. Since I have had no instances of glutening from anything I now just read the ingredient label and if no gluten is involved in the list then I will give... -
ARCHIVED I Had A Beer In A Public Place!
par18 replied to gdobson's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I see you are in New Hampshire. Merrimack, NH is the only AB location that produces Redbridge at the present time. I just read something on an NPR website that makes reference to the brewing process and how they make a batch every other week. According to the article the line shuts down for a period of time so it can be cleaned before starting the process... -
Thanks Nikki, I actually found that website before posting here. From what I could tell from another website the old control tower is now someone's home. Fixed up it looks very nice. I was hoping someone lives in the area and could visit sometime. I assume there may be some memorial type markers on the property which make reference to the time it served...

Is anyone out there in the UK familiar with the Santa Pod Raceway which is located on the site of the old USAAF Air Base at Podington? Just curious what if any structures remain of the base as my late father served there in 1944. Tom

ARCHIVED I Had A Beer In A Public Place!
par18 replied to gdobson's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Gina, I actually had the same experience (PF Changs in Richmond, Va) about a month ago. I had been drinking Redbridge since it came out last December but had not found it while dining out until recently. I can appreciate how nice it is to have a meal and a beer. Tom -
ARCHIVED How Did They Find Out Celiac's React To Gluten?
par18 replied to Jesse E's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This is exactly what Dr. Alessio Fasano said in a talk he gave last summer that I attended. It makes perfect sense to me. The grain shortages of WWII were responsible for making the connection between gluten and the "malnourished" condition of people. If I remember the numbers quoted correctly the mortality rate was like 40% before WWII and 40% after WWII... -
I assume you are active. The only way I know to gain weight is to take in more calories than you burn. I don't know how often you eat during the day but the more often the better. You don't have to eat a lot at one time but you do need to eat a certain amount every few hours. Like I said if you burn calories you will have to eat enough to maintain and then...

ARCHIVED Immodium Consquences
par18 replied to alamaz's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes I feel exactly the same way. Before Dx I used it with absolutely no success. Since being on the diet (over 2 years) I have not had a single episode of "D". My "D" stopped 36 hours into the gluten free diet. This makes perfect sense as my body's reaction to gluten is to "flush" it out of the system. Since I have been able to successfully exclude gluten... -
I must be missing something as I have eaten there at least 4 times and the only part of the sauce they substitute is the soy and I have never had a problem. I used the yellow mustard and red chili the other night with the gluten free soy sauce and all was well. I wonder where the info for the hot mustard not being gluten free is listed. Tom

ARCHIVED Redbridge----
par18 replied to GeoffCJ's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
In Richmond, Va I have seen it priced as low as $6.57 (Walmart) which is more than reasonable and as high as $8.99 at a discount beverage store which doesn't have a clue. There is no reason why it should be so expensive as AB can produce it and ship it nationwide. I think some retailers are just pretending that it is hard to get and taking the opportunity... -
ARCHIVED P.f. Chang's - Princeton, Nj
par18 replied to A-Holovacs's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Went to the one in Richmond, Va this past Friday night. Have been before and really enjoyed it. On my last trip about 6 months ago I mentioned to the manager that the new beer Redbridge was due to come out soon. While waiting to place my order I scanned the beverage list and low and behold right on the bottom of the beer selections was "Redbridge". I knew... -
Today is exactly 2 years since I was offically diagnosed with Celiac Disease. In some respects it seems like yesterday that I started the gluten free diet. In the beginning I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life reading labels. As it turns out I only have to read every now and then since most of my diet consists of naturally gluten free food....

I see Milky Way posted as gluten free. I was of the opinion that it is not gluten free. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Tom

I have always felt that when only one person in a family has to go gluten free it is very hard. When the person is a young child who really has no choice in the matter it can be even harder. The fact that you might have to go on the diet with her is only going to give support and validity to the end result and that is better health for both of you. If it...

ARCHIVED Test Being Done And Worried
par18 replied to whattodo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have to agree with this post. Your best chance of avoiding possible problems in the future is to allow your body to heal itself through the gluten-free diet if in fact you do have Celiac. My family doctor told me (and I believe him) that Celiac was the absolute best diagnosis I could have gotten just for the reasons mentioned in the above post. My advice... -

ARCHIVED Follow Up Endoscopy?
par18 replied to cdfiance's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, Just saw your post. First question is has Alex been keeping a log of exactly what she is eating? Are the GI symptoms exactly the same as pre-diagnosis? She may be getting gluten from a source other than meals. One common mistake is a person licking envelopes. This was mentioned during a talk last summer by one of the leading Celiac research doctors... -
ARCHIVED Do Other People's Comments Bother You?
par18 replied to NWLAX36Mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My alltime favorite and it has happened more than once is when I told people how much weight I had lost before the Dx (unlike them I was not overweight to start with) they replied "maybe I should get it so I can lose some weight". My response to one of them was it would be easier to just put a piece of duct tape over your mouth when you feel the urge to eat... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab--what's The Scoop?
par18 replied to woolwhippet's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree it would be helpful if you could get anyone to listen to you. I got my mother gene tested (she and I have DQ2 but only I have had symptoms and was diagnosed with Celiac Disease) and we notified her side of the family. Basically no one really cared. Some I am sure have Celiac-type issues but all would rather blame it on something else. I would venture... -
I actually have a medical ID necklace. I ordered it through Walgreen's. Cost about $10. On it I have "Celiac Disease Intolerant of Gluten". I also have my name, address and home phone number. You can actually put whatever message on it you want. It may or may not help but don't think it will hurt to have one. It is possible the person attending to you might...

Three Va teams left. VCU needs to control tempo today. Virginia/Tennessee should not need a shot clock. Va Tech/Southern Ill (low scoring) and this may come down to making free throws. All three teams have excellent guards. Tom
