  1. Sounds like you may be getting gluten from somewhere or maybe you have an issue with some other food. You can try an elimination diet with what you are currently eating. Things like soap, shampoo or toothpaste could also be the culprit. I was told at a seminar last summer by one of the leading doctors for Celiac in the US that he had a patient who was sure...

    ARCHIVED Bbq Question

Hi, I went to a small local place near me and asked about their BBQ and sides. I talked to the person doing the cooking and after showing him my dining card we discussed what I might find to be ok. I live in Virginia and this place cooks "Memphis" style BBQ. Basically they slow cook the meat and then add sauce when serving. If you can determine what is...
  3. Mine went to a lab and were back within a week. Tom
  4. Angie, Where was the sample available? Was the place a speciality beverage store? I have read where Red Bridge would not be out until January 2007. This is good news. Did your DH get any idea how much it might cost? Looking foward to tasting it. I am able to get New Grist at Kroger here in Virginia. It is a little pricey ($33 a case) but I expect the price...
  5. I think part of the reason doctors don't look for it, is that they believe the diet is too hard. They're supported in this belief by studies showing, IMHO, shockingly low compliance rates. Heck, just look at how many people on here complain about the diet! (I'm not saying we shouldn't, just noting that it's not inconceivable for doctors to derive a picture...
  6. Basically I think it is just ignorance on the part of most doctors. Lack of education in this particular area is probably the biggest reason. If a patient happens to mention Celiac to the doctor and it is dismissed as "it can't be that" is both ignorant and irresponsible. I was fortunate to have a GI who asked me on my one and only visit what I thought was...
  7. Mitch, It only took a day and a half for my symptoms to disappear. They have never come back. I don't know why you would want any more tests as you just passed what I consider the most important one. You have a positive diet response. If you don't want to believe it then you can go back to eating gluten and if you get sick enough you will probably get...
  8. Rebecca, I tested positive for Celiac via biopsy in May 05. At that time I had never had a blood test. I did however get follow-up blood test this past summer. I had anit-body test to check progress (it was good, negative) and also a gene test to see which one I had. I had DQ2. Then I thought of how I might have gotten the gene. My father was deceased...
  9. Hi Shelly, All I can tell you is that from my own personal experience I started noticing improvement in a couple of days. That said we are all different. Have you ever tried to do something like a gluten free diet before? The reason I ask is that you must make sure you identify any potential sources of gluten before deciding whether or not to eat/drink...
  10. To answer the first question about stuffing with gluten bread I would say no! The second question about non-mix stuffing may depend on whether or not you like something like cornbread. There are stuffings which you can make with sausage and cornbread as an example. My wife used a combination of gluten free sandwich bread and day old cornbread. I'm sure if...
  11. Are you are aware that Celiac is genetic? Your son probably has one of the genes if he has Celiac. If so he got it from you or his mother. There is a good chance if he has it than maybe you do too. If it were me I would wait to see what his results are and if positive both of you could go on the diet together. It would good support for him and good practice...
  12. Is nausea the only thing you notice? Neither cheese or a banana has gluten. Have you tried going gluten free at all. Is your son on the diet now? There are a lot of symptoms associated with Celiac and although I can't remember having nausea I do think that it is a symptom to some. Are all foods giving you nausea or just certain ones? Tom
  13. Because insurance companies understand this condition about as well as the majority of the medical community. They don't view genetic testing as preventive medicine. How else do you explain why 95% of the estimated 3 million people with this disorder are still undiagnosed. Insurance companies look for "any" reason to increase your rates. With only 5% of the...
  14. Hi, Coming to DC this Wednesday for the day. Wife has business meeting. I want to tour some. Which is best method of travel to monuments and museums from Union Station. (subway or bus) Also any suggestions on dining. ( I could bring something with me) Tom
  15. I agree with Carla. Really does it matter whether or not it is the same or that you even have a diagnosis if when you change your eating habits you feel better. The bottom line is if you are seeking a better quality of life what difference does it make how you get there or whether you have a name for it. It seems as though some people have been so sick for...
  16. The first question is for everyone who is currently on the gluten free diet. Did you know anything about Celiac Disease/ Gluten intolerance before you had to start the diet? In other words did you have the option of trying the diet first. My second question is for all of those out there that are coming to this website with unexplained symptoms. What would...
  17. If you say you tested positive for gluten intolerance then you have to let the diet run it's course for the time being. I don't know what this ten days is all about. Some people like me noticed a difference in a couple of days and others take longer. This is why we are all different. I would suggest doing one thing at a time. To try the diet and continue...
  18. Why don't you just go back on the diet and stay on it? What happend when you went on the diet last year? Did it seem to help at all? I don't think anyone on this board can say if you do or don't. Only you know how you feel when you try it. I think you can get tested forever and may or may not show anything. If you feel the diet helps then I guess it really...
  19. I like to think so since my chronic reflux/indigestion went away along with the lower GI issues as soon as I went gluten free last year. It has never returned. Just as well as I think I had enough Gavicon before Dx to last me 2 lifetimes. Thankfully just another thing I don't need to use anymore. I bet there are a lot of people out there with just refllux...
  20. If this is true what are you going to do about it? Tom
  21. Have you felt any better at all since starting the diet? Also what are you eating? Cassidy made a good point in that it needs to be simple in the beginning. (mostly naturally gluten free and maybe elimainate dairy to start) I personally started to feel better right away. This does not mean what you are going through is unusual only that we are all different...
  22. The beer is good. I can still remember the first gluten free meal I ate over 18 months ago. Boiled potatoes and mixed veggies with a glass of water (too scared to eat anything else). As far as I was concerned my life was over. The point is for all of you just starting out is that "anything is possible". Looking back I now understand that the rest of my life...
  23. Tonight for dinnner I had a what I consider a throw-back meal. Cheeseburger (on gluten free toast), potato chips, pickles and washed it all down with a "New Grist". All while chatting on this board. Does it get any better than that? Tom
  24. This is almost me except I would not have the pill around. I'm so used to this diet now that if only there were more gluten free dining out choices to choose from I would feel exactly as I did before going on the diet. I think there is a better chance of this happening in my lifetime than a cure. If I had to take a pill then I don't consider it a cure either...
  25. Hi, What is the "nhs"? Tom
