Hi, What is the "nhs"? Tom -
ARCHIVED How Long After Being Gluten Free Did Your Sleep Improve
par18 replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
For me in the beginning there were two issues keeping me from sleeping much at all. One was I was so malnourished I could not get enough exercise to get tired. I was eating a lot of food each day with no appetite. The other more important issue was just plain "anxiety". I could not convince myself in the beginning I would recover. I would lay awake in the... -

ARCHIVED Not High Results?
par18 replied to Peta's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Peta, Are your sister and nephew on the gluten free diet? When you say no one in your family will take it seriously who are you talking about (husband, parents?) Why in the world with a sister and nephew both diagnosed would you not put your son on the diet right now to see if you can give him some relief? You have already admitted that you do not need... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Panel Now Rejected For H. Insurance
par18 replied to Mom to Many's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You say you were gluten free years ago? Was there a history of Celiac/gluten intolerance in your family somewhere? If so this would have been a good reason to have put your daughter on the diet before testing to see if she responded. If she did respond in a positive way then you would not have had to say anything to the insurance company. I'm not second guessing... -

ARCHIVED Should I Get Tested
par18 replied to pinktulip's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't know quite how to answer a question like that. Yes they "can" tell with specific results. Whether or not you get those results is something else. If you do test positive or negative then of course you could get more tests, and more tests and more tests. Believe me if you have the money and the the time they have all the tests you want. Or like I... -
ARCHIVED For Those Of You Who Have/had Reflux Problems
par18 replied to AliceW's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
For me it was pretty much right away (couple of days). Bloating, gas, D and reflux cleared up pretty much together. Maybe the fact that the gut, stomach and esophagus are all connected together has something to do with it. Tom -
ARCHIVED "newbies" How Did You Find This Website?
par18 replied to par18's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
No apology necessary. Actually anyone can answer. I myself found it by searching my symptoms shortly before my diagnosis last year. I just did not find it soon enough. Tom -
ARCHIVED "newbies" How Did You Find This Website?
par18 posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just curious how you found this site. Also did recent publicity on CBS, USA and CNN have anything to do with searching for it? Also welcome aboard! Tom -
ARCHIVED Had A Celiac Test While Off Wheat, Concerned Results Aren't Valid
par18 replied to angel42's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Are you at least convinced that "something" you are eating is causing your problems? If you are then you have a couple of choices concerning your next step. The only way you are going to increase your risk of things associated with Celiac is to continue to eat gluten while trying to determine what is wrong. If excluding gluten (or somethng else) from your... -
ARCHIVED Should I Get Tested
par18 replied to pinktulip's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Cramping is a symptom. When you say you mentioned it to her do you mean Celiac? What do you mean when you say "she said the only symptom is reflux"? Is she talking about you or the symptom reflux as pertains to Celiac. I'm sort of confused. That said I still agree with your father. Try the diet to see if it helps. If it does then maybe bowel movements will... -
ARCHIVED Should I Get Tested
par18 replied to pinktulip's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I take it you mean your father was diagnosed with Celiac? If so I think it would be ok to mention it to your doctor but if it were me I would just try the diet to see if it improves your reflux. I had reflux along with other symptoms and it disappeared along with the other symptoms. Unless it is for piece of mind an official diagnosis would only cost you... -
ARCHIVED How Long?
par18 replied to bonnieboo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
For me it was the day after the first full day gluten free. No one told me it "could" be this fast. The most common timeframe I was given was 6 months to 2 years. Now that was depressing! As a result I kept thinking I would experience reoccurance of my symptoms from time to time in the beginning. Because I was so diligent and careful I never did. The longer... -
ARCHIVED Fuming...mil Doesn't 'get It'!
par18 replied to anerissara's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have found that in most cases it is not whether or not they get it more than they just don't care. The fact that I look and feel healthy causes them no alarm. When I tell them I'm on this diet they start to feel sorry for me like it is the worst possible thing that could have happened. I have a laugh inside at their expense. As far as people like you MIL... -
ARCHIVED Do Any Biopsy-positive Celiacs Get Offended When Someone With
par18 replied to Nantzie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I really don't see a difference between the two. I had a positive biopsy but if I could turn back the clock I would have done the diet long before I ever got sick. The positive diagnosis to me means only one thing and that is I had to get sick as hell to find out what was wrong. The main reason I joined a support group was to try to help someone new avoid... -
ARCHIVED I've Lost 53 Pounds- Not Trying
par18 replied to elaine1956's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Elaine, I meant get back on the diet not "gluten". I think you started proving it when you said you had positive response before. Try going gluten free for an extended period of time. Don't make yourself any more sick than necessary. Then if it works you will have a pretty good idea this is what is wrong. Sorry about the misunderstanding. Tom -
ARCHIVED How Long Did It Take For Your Blood Test To Come Back?
par18 replied to elaine33's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I can only tell you what my primary care doctor told me when we found out that my problems were related to Celiac. He told me of all the things that it could have been this was the "best" possible diagnosis because of the fact that no medicine or surgery is required and there was an execellent chance I would completely recover (which I did ). I feel the same... -
ARCHIVED Happy Tummy :) And I'm Happy.
par18 replied to super-sally888's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Absolutely it is possible to have such a rapid response. Your body is saying thank you, thank you , thank you. Keep it up and keep us updated. I took a stomach/reflux medicine for the first couple of weeks on the diet but didn't need it after that as the diet took care of everything. Good luck. Tom -
ARCHIVED I've Lost 53 Pounds- Not Trying
par18 replied to elaine1956's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Elaine, I hear exactly what you are saying. I had a rumbling gut, contstant reflux/indigestion, bloating , chronic diarrhea etc, etc, etc. Was 30+ lbs underweight. All I reapeat all cleared up on the diet. The fact you said you went gluten free for a few days with improvement is "really important". In order to prove it you have to get back on it and stay... -
ARCHIVED I've Lost 53 Pounds- Not Trying
par18 replied to elaine1956's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I take it you have not started on the gluten-free diet. If you are not going to get a biopsy done I would suggest trying the diet right away. I mean like today. I stopped my chronic diarrhea the second day on the diet. If you have Celiac (and it sounds like you do) then the quickest way to tell is see what response you get with the diet. It is my understanding... -
ARCHIVED Cnn Special On Celiac Tomorrow ?
par18 replied to Judyin Philly's topic in Publications & Publicity

ARCHIVED Cnn Special On Celiac Tomorrow ?
par18 replied to Judyin Philly's topic in Publications & Publicity
Actually when I saw the small video I am reminded of the diagnosing rate for the illness (about 2-5%). Since it appears that about 95% of the video is missing then it makes perfect sense. I did however enjoy the audio! Tom -
ARCHIVED Hi. Newbie Here! Wondering If I Have Celiac.
par18 replied to nucci's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, I think starting the diet would be an excellent idea but only if you are willing to be 100% compliant. If this is your problem then I would expect you to see positive results soon. Good luck. Tom -
ARCHIVED Please Consider The Diet!
par18 replied to Terch's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, When I read a post like yours in which you are taking control of your health I am really encouraged about the future. I think it will be the "preventive medicine" approach that will ultimately make the biggest impact to getting more and more people to try the diet first. I applaud you for not being afraid to go forth without getting an "official" diagnosis...
