Pay close attention to this post as it is the way to go! Naturally gluten free food takes the guesswork out of the equation. You ask in your title why it is so hard. There are a couple of reasons. (1) You have to prepare a lot of what you eat in the beginning. (2) There are not a lot of eating out options ( there will be more coming in the future). (3) Most...

ARCHIVED Just Got Enterolab Results In, Confused!
par18 replied to mindypal's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, I can't tell you what a good blood test number would be in the beginning. I did not have the blood test because I was so sick I had a positive biopsy. I can tell you that after being 100% compliant on the diet for 14 months I had a follow-up blood test this past August. All my values from the complete panel were a "1". This did not surprise me as... -

Chris, Have you actually gone gluten free to see what happens? Since you have had the tests you cannot change anything. tom -
Thanks for reply. Tom

I am trying to find the "listserv" notice that 'floridanative' was referring to. Is it something that can be viewed? Tom

ARCHIVED How Can I Help My Husband Understand?
par18 replied to hannahsue01's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I see very little difference between men and women when it comes to getting it or not getting it. The only thing I notice on this board is that there a lot more women than men posting. Do more women get diagnosed than men ? Whether it is a man drinking a beer in front of me or a woman eating gluten bread the reaction is still the same. They both roll their... -
ARCHIVED Bleh! New Grist Is Gross!
par18 replied to chewymom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have to agree with you. I have drank a lot of beer in my life prior to my diagnosis of Celiac last year. This is far from the worst beer I ever had. I try not to compare most gluten free products with their gluten counterpart. I am comparing it to no beer. When I look at it that way it actually tastes pretty good. Tom -
Actually yes. I got a cheap one through Walgreen's (about $10) that goes around my neck. You can put whatever information on it you want. The way I see it what harm could it do. If nothing else it could increase awareness. Tom

ARCHIVED Confused
par18 replied to clockworkjoce's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I can't help but feel that good old common sense has a way of overcoming those things that sometimes seem so diffucult to understand. Just stay on the diet unless you feel it does not help. Your body is trying to tell you something very important. Listen to it! This is one case in which it should be "body over mind" and not the other way around. Tom -
ARCHIVED Diet Response
par18 replied to nire's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes I would try the diet if I were you. Basically it can't hurt. Be aware of hidden gluten in things like toothpaste, mouthwash, soap etc. Also don't lick any envelopes. Good luck. Tom -
ARCHIVED Bloating Came Back And What Kind Of Followup Recommended
par18 replied to Cheret's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, I went to a seminar a couple of months ago and asked the follow-up question. The response I got from Dr. Fasano from the University of Maryland was that the celiac panel blood tests need to be run (how often probably depends on how you feel) in order to see if you are accidentally getting any gluten in your diet. Basically this panel of tests checks... -
ARCHIVED Diet Response
par18 replied to nire's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, I quess my first question to you would be do you have any symptoms which you think might be due to gluten intolerance? Second if you do have symptoms how often do you have them? Third how severe are these symptoms. I have heard all types of time frames as to how one may respond to the diet. You must realize that we are talking about 100% elimination... -
ARCHIVED Weight Loss And celiac disease
par18 replied to pita's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, The lactose intolerance may only be temporary if her intestines are damaged. She may be able to tolerate dairy later. If she starts gaining weight and feels ok she may try a little at a time later. Tom -
ARCHIVED Gf Beer--i'll Let You Know How It Goes!
par18 replied to jenvan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I had to do the same with New Grist. Have a few left. Really does not taste bad. I called AB last week about their unannounced product (Redbridge). They said they would get back to me. When they called and left me a phone mail it was as I expected (they have no comment at this time). I expect maybe we will see something in the near future. The label I saw... -
ARCHIVED What Else Can I Do?
par18 replied to Adelle's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Basically this is what my wife and I did. We made the house 100% gluten free to start with. Because we never had children it was just a matter of getting her to agree. She did this with no questions asked. I do most of the cooking and like Nini most of our meals are naturally gluten free. We spend a lot "less" money on food because nothing is wasted. Personally... -
My mother recently had the celiac panel of blood tests run including the gene test. She has not had symptoms. Mainly we were checking to see if she had one of the genes. She did (DQ2). She told me that neither her insurance nor medicare will cover the cost of the test . I have not seen the bill. Does anyone out there on medicare know whether this is true...

Same here 16 months without so much as a cold. I think the immune system that can make one so ill detecting gluten must be pretty strong to keep you well after you exclude the offending substance from your diet.

ARCHIVED Help Please. I Am Sooo Confused!
par18 replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well I would say if you go and "stay" gluten-free you have the best chance to have any of your symptoms get better or disappear. I had a blood test for the first time 14 months after my biopsy last year and was not surprised that all my levels were negative/normal. This told me exactly what I expected and that is that I have been avoiding gluten successfully... -
Thanks Nikki. Maybe the incorrect spelling will attract more attention to it. This is the result of typing too fast. Tom

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Berr From Ab?
par18 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just saw a photo of a beer label on the website www.brewblog.com/ this morning. The name of the label was "Red Bridge" and it has the Anheuser Busch name on it also. I called AB and asked for information about this possible new product. I was not given anything specific but did leave my name and e-mail. This website is from one of AB's competitors. I know... -
Mainly just something convenient to eat on occasion. As far as the thing I miss the most is beer. I wasn't a big drinker but I did enjoy a cold one every now and then. I have tried the "New Grist" and it is not bad. It is just pricey and hard to get. Somehow wine or a cocktail isn't what I would call a good tailgate/golf course beverage. I'm afraid if I poured...

ARCHIVED Rise In Celiacs Or More Awareness?
par18 replied to up-late's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think Celiac has probably been around as long as gluten. There is more awareness now but not as much as should be. The fact that so many people take prescription drugs for just about everything make it difficult to determine just how many people may be affected. It appears a large segment of the population either cannot or will not cook meals at home so...
