  1. I had damaged villi and weight loss. No mention was made of anything but gluten. I read where lactose is absorbed through the tips of the villi. Since this part is the first to go I did not know if I would be able to digest without problems. I only waited two weeks. Trying to gain weight I drank milk and nothing bad happened. I was never a big dairy person...
  2. Actually I don't want to cook for myself but I guees it has been the best way to avoid accidential gluten. I have only eaten 3 meals out .( had one today) I imagine one of these days it may happen but I not going to be disappointed if it doesn't. I have often thought what might happen it I ate just a little but can't make myself do it. Anyway happy New Year...
  3. How do you feel since going gluten-free? If ok then what is the reason to get an "official" diagnosis? Does GI need a new car?
  4. Drinking a cup of Folgers as I am typing this reply. On gluten-free diet since May 05. The only thing I am careful with are creamers. Tom
  5. I agree with this post exactly. I ate a lot of calories in the beginning with absolutely no appetite. You cannot gain weight if you don't eat. I spaced the meals out rather than try to eat a huge amount once or twice a day. The RD I went to put me on 3 meals and 2 snacks a day. I tried to balance the protein, carb, fruit etc. If you completely avoid all gluten...
  6. Hi Belinda, Just saw your post. Your question I will have to say is probably the most asked of anyone who has had this disease. I think the problem with any answer is the number of variables that we are dealing with. Age, damage and sensitivity are just a few. I was 55 yrs old with villi damage when diagnosed in May 05. I was obsessed with the absorption...
  7. I called Ramapo and talked to rep. I did not order yet. I live in Virginia and have been gluten-free since May 05. Going to NC to visit in-laws Christmas Day. I may have some gluten-free beer there waiting for me. I would like to taste some prior to ordering myself. With each passing day I think we are all that much closer to having one of the major brewers...
  8. Since I have never been glutened ( on diet since May 05), I don't really have comfort food. Most of the time if I want something to snack on it is usually fruit, yogurt, nuts or chips.
  9. Hi BK, This post brings back some not to distant memories. Seems like I was where you were not so long ago. The thing that I remember in my worst moments was not physical pain but the impatience I had with trying to get back to doing those active things that I had enjoyed before my Dx. I spent a lot of time reading almost anything and everything. Most...
  10. The daughter-in-law of a friend of mine said she was dx'd at a party and it wasn't by a doctor. I wish someone had dx'd me about 5 yrs ago. I think one reason more of us are not suggested a gluten-free diet is that most people don't discuss their symptoms with strangers or family members for that matter. Anyhow the next best thing is for me is to one day...
  11. Hello and welcome, Symptoms as well as healing time will vary. I was lucky in that the symptoms that came with my positive biopsy went away after two days and never came back. This was 7 months ago. The single biggest hurdle I got over was realizing I was not going to die from malabsorption. The bloating, gas, diarrhea, and heartburn are gone. Once the...
  12. Kim, It's only been seven months so although I am new to this lifestyle I feel like a veteran. The choices you have today are better than yesterday and tomorrow will be better than today. Seeing the article on the front of last Friday's Wall Street Journal means we are getting noticed. The two most important items I have used to research where and what...
  13. Have had mild symptoms about the last 5 to 7 years. I think it must have been initally triggered with a bout of the flu. This past March I caught a bad case of the flu and I guess that triggered the main outbreak. Dx'd in May and went on diet. Fine now.
  14. potatoes(any form) tortilla chips meats fruit and veggies cornbread
  15. I recovered nicely in 7 months and don't feel any symptoms on gluten-free diet. I don't think a scope will show me any more than what my body is telling me and that is I feel great and have gained back all lost weight and then some. Maybe a once a year blood test for other things. Each person is different but I would rather spend the money on the diet.
  16. I had a blood test after about 6 months but not for levels of anti-bodies. Because I responded so well to diet and feel so good I was only checking things like blood sugar. I had a bone density test done about a month after Dx. I would probably get annual bone scan before blood tests if I still feel good with none of the previous celiac disease symptoms.
  17. [i'm Adult age 55. Dx'd in May 2005. Have had no symptoms since going on gluten-free diet. At first I was concerned with cross contamination but now I will look at labels and consume if no gluten listed. It may be hard to determine what your sensitivity would be based on my experience. The other day I had my first french fries and shake at McDonald's in ...

ARCHIVED Good Gi Doctor In Va?

I live in Richmond, Was diagnosed through biopsy 7 days after meeting GI for the first time in late April 2005. Before meeting I knew nothing of Celiac or gluten-free diet. I had classic symptoms( malabsorption, diarrhea, weight loss). Once on diet all symptoms disappeared. What are your symptoms and why did you go on gluten-free diet? Also what do you mean...
  19. Hi Lisa I'm up the road in VA. 7 months ago when I started gluten-free diet I was thin and weak. Had lost 20 lbs and was 6'1" and weighed 146. Appointment with RD 3 days after Dx. We put me on gain diet which consisted of eating real gluten-free food. 3 meals and 2 snacks each day (approx 3000 cals) . Eggs ,bacon, grits, gluten-free toast , juice for...
  20. Does everyone remember their last gluten meal before diagnosis. Mine was a ham and cheese on a kaiser roll. 5 mins after eating the GI called with the good/bad news. 5/03/05. Tom
  21. About the only expensive items my wife and I buy are the meats. I am semi-retired and my wife works from home. I do most of the cooking and my wife eats most of the same meals I do. I bake my own bread or buy a few bread items from Good Foods. I decided from the beginning I was not going to depend on convenience items. First of all it is too expensive. Second...
  22. I eat fruit every day and it really helps. Usually 1 apple (skin on) and 1 banana or other fruit. I try to get fiber through naturally gluten free foods like raw or cooked veggies. Check labels on foods for fiber content.
  23. My wife insisted I get an appointment to see a family friend who was a Psychiatrist. This was before I was diagnosed! As it turned out I saw him anyway after the diagnosis. It helped just to talk as I was not sure how I would respond to the diet. As it turned out I recovered quickly. As far as family members are concerned I made up my mind I was going to...
  24. That is really the right attitude towards this illness. I would venture to say that celebs as well as thousands of other people are suffering as we communicate right now. If more articles like yesterday's Wall Street Journal piece on this disease are made public then we can expect to see more of us. It doesn't take a genius to figure out this illness. Trial...
  25. Actually I don't miss certain foods as much as I miss the convenience of just getting something on the go. Having to get up early and fix breakfast and packing a lunch when meeting friends for an outing is really one of the real downsides of this disease. I did enjoy the occasional twinkie with a cup of coffee before but being 55 years old when diagnosed...
