  1. Looking back I was having "gut" issues as much as 10 years before my Dx in May 05. One reason I think it was so hard for me to pinpoint the cause was that I always liked naturally gluten-free food. I might not eat much bread etc. for days at a time so my body was in a constant state of inflammation/recovery. This made me think I was always getting some type...
  2. Hi, Just read your post. I understand where you DH is coming from. If in fact your son's problem is gluten related then the only way he will show signs of improvement is getting on the diet. Is your son interested in "growing" if it is possible? I spent most of my life undersized for my height. It was only after going gluten free that I began to become...
  3. Hi, Like other posters your situation is not as straightfoward as you would like. You have had a negative blood test and a doctor wanting to do a biopsy. Even if it (biopsy) is negative the doctor is leaning toward you trying a gluten-free diet. What would happen if you did this (try diet) and get a positive response? Would the doctor be willing to give...
  4. Just give the diet a chance. Concentrate on doing what is necessary to feel better and see what happens. A negative response to a relapse is an indication in itself. Take it one step at a time. Understand that if you have to give up something (gluten) you have the possibility of getting something (a better quality of life) in return. Think positive and good...

    ARCHIVED Help Please?

Same here . Never done that or been tempted. Sorry about the pun but if you do that you are a "gluten" for punishment.. Tom
  6. This was a very big question for me when I started the diet over 2 years ago. Nobody could really give me a definite answer. Unless you get scoped every couple of weeks (who really wants to do that) and see possible changes then the only other way to measure in my opinion is to use your previous symptoms as a guide. Since my main symptoms were chronic "D...
  7. I actually went into a McDonald's for the first time in months a couple of weeks ago. It was in the morning and I was checking to see what I might eat for breakfast. I had taken a couple of gluten-free waffles in the car to have with a cup of coffee. When I got there I walked inside to see what info they had relating to gluten-free. I looked at the chart...
  8. As far as the genetic part my lab report listed the test as: "Celiac Disease HLA DQ Assoc." Under that section were the results of the tests for the two specific Celiac genes DQ2 and DQ8. (I was positive for DQ2 and negative for DQ8) The lab I used was LabCorp. Tom
  9. In the beginning I kept a food journal and gave up "almost" everything that was convenient (eating out and buying something already made gluten-free with alternative grains). Also we made our kitchen basically gluten-free. I know this is virtually impossible for many. The postive aspect of this drastic measure was that I was never accidentally glutened. This...
  10. I understand. The Mayo clinic is a pretty major resource. It's too bad you have to wait another 2 weeks to start what will probably be the relief for your daughter and that is the gluten-free diet. Anyway good luck. When I got diagnosed a couple of years ago via biopsy the doctor who performed the scope procedure said nothing after the endoscopy. I had no...
  11. Who gave your daughter a positive diagnosis for Celiac through bloodwork? What other tests are going to be run? Tom
  12. You did not say how you were feeling. I assume it is a lot better than last Dec. When I did follow up testing one year into the diet after damaged villi, I felt perfect prior to running the tests. When all the levels came back with the value of "1" it was no surprise. I don't know it there is any estimated time that villi heal and bloodwork becomes normal...
  13. Heather, I take it from your post you are going gluten-free on your 2 1/2 old in order to see if you can eliminate some or all of his symptoms. If this is true then that would seem a more systematic (if not logical) approach. Because Celiac can present so many symptoms there is a good possibility that you can identify/correct more than one with a simple...
  14. Yes I too like them. Just bought some more the other day. Lots of calories if you are trying to gain weight (200 for 1/2 of a bagel). I have eaten them for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I either make a sandwich or use one for a burger bun. Very filling. Tom

    ARCHIVED Jury Duty...

Say you were healed and were selected. You "wanted" to serve. Do you think arrangements could be made to provide something for you to eat in the event you and other jurors were possibly "sequestered"? Tom

    ARCHIVED Please Help

Do you have or are you familiar with the "Triumph" dining cards. If not go to www.triumphdining.com and see about getting them. They are used to educate the staff to prepare food in resturants that do not have a gluten-free menu. The Charleston area has a lot of wonderful resturants which specialize in "low country" cuisine. I am sure they would be able...
  17. Stay on the diet. Find another doctor. Tom
  18. My mother got a genetic test run through another lab after my positive diagnosis. At first neither Medicare or Anthem ( BCBS) was willing to pay for the test. I contacted my primary care doctor and they in turn contacted the lab (LabCorp) and provided some additional information. I don't know whether it was a statement that this was done as a preventitive...
  19. Before I was diagnosed I was tired and weak and malnourished. Today I feel healthy, strong and most important active. I am able to do things physically now that I was not able to do at any point in the previous 55 years prior to my diagnosis. To answer your question I am "normal" now. I was not normal before. Tom
  20. Celiac is genetic so if you have a first degree relative diagnosed it is at least a good possibility. There are tests that could be run (before trying the gluten-free diet) or you can try the diet to see what happens to your symptoms. My suggestion is not to do both at the same time. Bad tooth enamel and reflux are just a few of the many symptoms associated...
  21. Hi, When I started the diet a couple of years ago the first couple of weeks I was paronoid to say the least. I was convinced there was no way I could avoid accidental glutening. Maybe that was why I was so careful. I did not eat out at all for about 6 months. Each day that passed and I did not get any of my pre-diagnosis symptoms was a little milestone...
  22. At the bottom of the gene portion of my blood test done by LabCorp there is the following statement: "Greater than 95% of all Celiac patients are positive for either DQ2 or DQ8 (Sollid and Thorsby, (1993) Gastroenterology 105:910-922). However these antigens may also be present in patients who do not have Celiac disease). I take this to mean a small...
  23. I have been eating them for about 2 years with no problems. I see the "shared" facility statement on a lot of mainstream and speciality products. I view it as a CYA thing. So far I have had no problems with any products that appear gluten free but I might not be as sensitive as others since I have healed. If the ingredient list looks ok I will try most things...
  24. Hi, In my case I am the Celiac husband and I do most of the cooking. In the beginning I thought we had to get almost everything from Good Foods because of possibility of contamination. Everytime we made something like chili it was expensive cuts of meat ground with canned organic tomatoes and kidney beans that were twice the price. It did not take me long...
  25. Makes perfect sense to me. Consider yourself fortunate and good luck. Tom
