  1. Gail, I don't see how going from one extreme to another would be helpful. The problem with people thinking EVERYBODY should follow a low carb (or vegetarian) diet is, that too many people are still stuck in this 'one diet is right for everybody' thinking. Obviously, the high protein diet is wrong for you. I own a book called 'the metabolic typing diet...
  2. Nancy, since your kids have two celiac genes, it's safe to say that your daughter has now developed celiac disease. As you're waiting for your enterolab kit, you might as well put her on the gluten-free diet, to make her feel better as soon as possible. You don't have to eat gluten for the enterolab tests! And why not put the whole family on a gluten-free...
  3. Hi Kris, I have just read through this thread and don't really need to add much. Just wanted to say that you will save yourself from developing other autoimmune diseases and possibly cancer down the road by being gluten free. And of course, the same goes for your daughter. I am very glad you will stick with your family doctor and stay gluten-free, instead...
  4. Hi Mary Lynne, and welcome to our board. Well, your doctor gave you some right and some wrong information. He misinformed you when he claimed that no permanent damage to the villi could be done. Yes, it can, especially if you keep eating gluten. There is a point of no return, where your villi won't be able to completely heal again, no matter what you do....
  5. It can't be said often enough: Thanks a million, Scott!!!!!!!!!! For the first time since being a child I have hope of getting better, thanks to the information provided here.
  6. Hi Linda, and welcome to this board. I agree with the others, you sound like you have celiac disease, despite the negative tests. They certainly can be wrong. I also encourage you to try the gluten-free diet. You may also have other intolerances. Potatoes will cause bloating and diarrhea for me, too. You may try staying away from gluten, dairy and nightshades...
  7. Hi Bev, I agree totally with what's been said already. You need to get off the gluten and the dairy. Buy yourself some nice things (gluten-free of course) that you like, that you can eat whenever you feel like having gluteny things or dairy. My doctors were so clueless, too. Fortunately, my family doctor believes me, but the dermatologist treated me like...
  8. Nini, you're fabulous, always helping others, thanks!
  9. Thanks, Nini! But I have the same problem with the list of 50 things, it wants a password from me, too. So, I unzipped everything else but can't get that one. Franceen, there is one spot when it demands a password, where it says something like 'skip that one' or something like that. You click on that, and it will unzip everything else.
  10. Brian, because of my many intolerances, when I want a quick meal I make stir fries (even for breakfast). I use often just ground beef, brown that with onions, and then throw a bunch of cut-up veggies in with it, put a lid on and let it all simmer until done, and have a whole meal, that is healthy and satisfying. You can use beef strips or chicken strips,...
  11. Good for you! I guess you must be pretty happy to have found this place.
  12. Hi Larry and welcome to this board. Well, I've had burning skin, but it wasn't only from the celiac disease, I have other food intolerances, too. You don't have to have diarrhea to have celiac disease, though. IBS is one of those garbage diagnosis the doctor gives you when he doesn't have a clue what's wrong with you, and is too lazy to figure it out....
  13. Brian, a few thoughts: I am intolerant to the nightshade family, and especially tomatoes give me migraines, but potatoes will trigger headaches as well (and ketchup for sure!). It could be that the potato you eat every day might be the culprit! You definitely aren't eating enough. When I first went gluten-free I couldn't tolerate anything raw, not even...
  14. Hi Debbie, and welcome to this board. Your problem is a common one, unfortunately. Many people who were diagnosed as babies many years ago were later told that they 'outgrew' the celiac disease, or went into remission or similar nonsense. The doctor you saw recently should have told you that you don't outgrow celiac disease, and if you were diagnosed...
  15. Well, I HAVE seen hydrogenated coconut oil, in fact, I've seen it in my grocery store! But somehow I managed to get things backward in my post. You're right, if it's hydrogenated it is very hard at room temperature, and if it's cold pressed it will be semi liquid when it's warm, but firmer when it's cool.
  16. Matilda, if you seriously are drinking nearly a whole bottle of wine every day, then you may be slipping into alcoholism, as that is way too much. You know, people usually get addicted to things they're allergic/intolerant to. You said the wine gives you diarrhea, that is confirmation that you really can't tolerate it. I think you need to get support to...
  17. Hi Kelly, and welcome to this board. While I don't have a child with celiac disease (at least not one who is obvious), I have it myself. I've read enough here about children with celiac disease, to have an idea of what your son's problem is. If the IgG and IgA tests were positive for celiac disease, he definitely has it, and should be on the gluten-free diet...
  18. Since you have had the biopsy done, and are determined to try the diet regardless of results, why wait for the results to come in? There is no good reason, in my opinion, to not go gluten-free RIGHT NOW! The gluten-free diet is extremely healthy and will not lead to negative health consequences, unless you start eating a whole lot of gluten-free junk food...
  19. Nic, does Jacob still have dairy? If yes, you may want to try eliminating dairy to see if this helps. Also, soy and/or corn could be a culprit. Or just about most anything, if he is intolerant to it. Most people with celiac disease also have other intolerances, the most common ones being the ones I mentioned. You may want to investigate that. Most of...
  20. Don't worry too much about your weight right now, but concentrate on making sure you're 100% gluten-free. Once your intestines heal and you start absorbing your nutrients again, you'll gain weight eventually. Snack a lot (it's called 'grazing') all through the day, on things that are good for you. Ice cream is high in sugar and not such a great idea all the...
  21. I agree that your test results are positive for celiac disease. I agree with everything your doctor wants to do, except for the gluten challenge. I think that is a terrible idea. You likely have other problems on top of the celiac disease. Try cutting out corn and soy to see if it makes a difference.
  22. Are you sure you aren't intolerant to soy as well? It will cause the same symptoms as gluten with me (and I'm not the only one here). It could also have been the cheese.......a lot of people with celiac disease can't tolerate dairy at all, at least not for the first while of going gluten-free. It is possible that the people at the restaurant told you the...
  23. One good thing about green tea is, that it is high in vitamin K, which many celiacs are deficient in. I drank it regularly for months, until I figured out that I can't have it, because it's high in salicylates, too.
  24. Actually, Vincent, I wasn't promoting sugar. I agree that it is poison, and have been avoiding it for the past 25 or more years (and my kids complain about other friends getting candy, cookies and pop in their lunches, and those things aren't even allowed in this house for the most part!). But that doesn't make Splenda a healthier choice. If you would...
  25. Actually, Aspartame has been proven to cause blindness, heart attacks, strokes, cancer, diabetes and many other illnesses. In my humble opinion, that makes it pretty deadly. And the chlorine atoms I get NATURALLY in foods that already contain it, are a totally different matter to them being used to replace parts of another molecule. By the way, Aspartame...
