ARCHIVED Ridges In Fingernails
Ursa Major replied to lindalee's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yep, have had ridges on my fingernails as long as I can remember (wich is quite a while ). -
ARCHIVED Have Major Trouble With Legumes...
Ursa Major replied to Shannon27's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Shannon, and welcome to this board. You're right to trust the stool tests more than the bloodwork, as the stool tests are much more sensitive than the blood work. If your stool tests say you're gluten intolerant, then you are. You have an ignorant doctor, and I'm glad you're going to find another one. People with celiac disease have a high rate of gallbladder... -
ARCHIVED Soymilk Products
Ursa Major replied to Shelley Gunn's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Shelley, natural flavouring MIGHT contain gluten, but on the other hand, it might not. We shouldn't eat anything that includes it as an ingredient just in case it does contain gluten. You may just be intolerant to soy! Soy will cause a reaction in intolerant people that is very much like being glutened. -
ARCHIVED Newbie Confusion
Ursa Major replied to Ivy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Ivy, and welcome to this board. I am another one who wasn't diagnosed until the age of 52 (actually, I diagnosed myself, because my doctors were clueless as well). What nonsense, that you can't have celiac disease unless you have grey, floating stools. You doctor is completely ignorant about celiac disease, allergies and intolerances, and you ought to... -
ARCHIVED Now I Know I'm Celiac, Do I Screen My Children?
Ursa Major replied to Sarah8793's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, Tylenol and Codeine are the only painkillers that work for me. It's a bit of a 'pain', as it would be nice to have more options, but that's okay. I had polyps removed when I was three, and have a small one now, but was told that it is too small to be a problem. Susie (my 14-year-old) has a very large polyp in her left sinus (the one below her eye... -
ARCHIVED Now I Know I'm Celiac, Do I Screen My Children?
Ursa Major replied to Sarah8793's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Okay, I was just making sure. And no, I didn't know that ibuprofin could cause a reaction. Since I self-diagnosed myself, and my doctor knows nothing about salicylate intolerance (she just takes notes and learns from me when I tell her these things ), she also didn't tell me that I shouldn't be using ibuprofin. Now I know why it never worked for me any... -
ARCHIVED Oops, I Ate A Cliff Bar Today Thinking They Are Gluten Free!
Ursa Major replied to Sarah8793's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, let's just hope the rolled oats weren't contaminated, and the malt extract was from corn, not barley. Seriously, don't assume you'll be glutened, think positive, but avoid those bars from now on. You live and learn, it takes a while to figure it all out. -
ARCHIVED Arg! First Definite Glutening Since Dx
Ursa Major replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sorry you got glutened. It's unavoidable that it happens sooner or later. I hope you will feel better soon. -
ARCHIVED Now I Know I'm Celiac, Do I Screen My Children?
Ursa Major replied to Sarah8793's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sarah, since celiac disease is genetic, it is definitely a good idea to have your kids tested. Mariann, I just read through your signature. Do you realize that recurring nasal polyps are TYPICAL for a salicylate intolerance, and if you're allergic to Aspirin, that is also a sure sign you're salicylate intolerant (since of course Aspirin IS salicylic acid... -
ARCHIVED Waiting Time For Specialist?
Ursa Major replied to sore joints's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Well, let's just say your waiting time could be anywhere from three months to two years, depending on the GI. It would be easier and faster (even though not cheaper) to be tested by Enterolab. More reliable, too. Check it out: Open Original Shared Link Also, OHIP won't pay for the blood tests, you have to pay for them yourself ($130.00), which I think... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Vs. Gluten Intolerance
Ursa Major replied to billy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Are you eating gluten-free? Why would you think you need to ever be retested, what would be the point? All you need to do is, to be gluten-free and dairy free, and you'll be okay. If your blood test was positive, and you are feeling better on the diet, you obviously have celiac disease, and that's that. If you have osteoporosis, it seems likely that you... -
Well, if it says something like 'milk ingredients' or 'modified milk ingredients', or skim milk powder, or really anything that says 'milk' or 'dairy'. I am not sure it actually ever says 'casein'. And you avoid anything you KNOW is made from milk, like any kind of cheese, yogourt, milk, butter (except for ghee, it is safe I believe), cream etc. And that...

ARCHIVED My Son Is Not Alone!
Ursa Major replied to momothree's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree. You kids will likely get a noticable reaction once they've been on the diet for a while. Many here actually got diarrhea and all the awful gastro problems when glutened, even if before the diet they hardly had any noticable symptoms. Testing on toddlers is notoriously unreliable, and your little one (especially she has symptoms) was very likely... -
ARCHIVED Good Sources Of Fiber?
Ursa Major replied to jabberwife's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You may not be getting enough fat! That can be a problem. Low fat diets are very unhealthy and actually cause heart attacks, rather than prevent them. You need to avoid trans fats. Any hydrogenated fats are terrible. Coconut oil (cold pressed) is great. Animal fat is HEALTHY for you, and your body needs it (not in huge amounts, of course). Your fiber intake... -
ARCHIVED Make-up, Shampoo...
Ursa Major replied to majicbunnies's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, I personally get skin reactions to gluten in personal care products, like rashes and hives. Others do not, but since shampoo gets on your hands, you will eventually get some in your mouth. Gluten in lipstick is a no-brainer, and lotion and soap are no good, either, as you will have them on your hands. It just makes more sense to replace them all with... -
ARCHIVED Cure: Homeopathy?
Ursa Major replied to majicbunnies's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am sure that there are homeopathic remedies that will help your intestines to heal faster. I use sepia when I am glutened, as I get an inflamed stomach, and it sure helps the awful stomach ache go away fast. So, while it might really be helpful to heal quicker, I wouldn't go to this particular homeopathic doctor, as she is clearly misinformed and misguided... -
ARCHIVED Do You Have Exams For Bone Density And Other Tests?
Ursa Major replied to Sarah8793's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sarah, dairy is actually NOT a good source of calcium, unless you use raw milk. The pasteurization process destroys the enzyme that allows you to take up the calcium in dairy. There is plenty of calcium in dark green vegetables. And I am SUPPOSED to be taking a calcium supplement, but have been very negligent in taking anything lately. If I have a hard... -
ARCHIVED Do You Have Exams For Bone Density And Other Tests?
Ursa Major replied to Sarah8793's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sarah, I had a bone density test last year, it's no big deal. Your regular doctor orders it, it's sort of like getting an x-ray of your hips and lower spine. It is a good idea, so you know if you have osteoporosis. I am not positive what the other tests are. But I think that checking your levels of certain nutrients is a good idea. For myself, I'd test... -
I can eat things like broccoli and spinach only occasionally, if I make sure that for the rest of the day I eat only things with no salicylates at all. The only fruits I can still eat are peeled pears, peeled golden delicious apples and a banana once a week (don't know why I can't tolerate those). I initially ate pears every day, but developed an allergy...

ARCHIVED Medicine For Your Period
Ursa Major replied to Mindy35's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh, and I forgot that omega 3 essential fatty acids are VERY important. You may want to make sure you get enough of those. If you supplement every day, after two months on those, and what Carla suggested, should eliminate the need for meds altogether. -
ARCHIVED Help Do I Have Celiac
Ursa Major replied to charmaine broxton's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Right, I asked them a while back if they test people in Canada, and they said that they test internationally, but you have to pay to send your stool samples back by courier. -
ARCHIVED Medicine For Your Period
Ursa Major replied to Mindy35's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Mindy, sepia (a homeopathic remedy from the health food store) is great with menstrual problems (it works for my daughter) or even stomach inflammation (I use it for that with great success when glutened). You just let several (I like six) of the little white pills dissolve under your tongue, and should feel relief within minutes. Just make sure you NEVER... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else Have Trouble With gluten-free Breads?
Ursa Major replied to ebrbetty's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can't eat gluten free bread because I am intolerant to rice, corn, soy and potatoes as well (and can't tolerate starches of any kind well). There could be lots of different reasons why you can't tolerate it. Really, you need to test all the ingredients separately. When I tried that, I got an immediate reaction to tapioca (burning tongue). The reactions... -
ARCHIVED Update On Our Son
Ursa Major replied to VydorScope's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Vincent, what good news! To be told your kid is perfectly normal and healthy is the best news imaginable. -
ARCHIVED Lotions, Shampoo Oh My Gosh!
Ursa Major replied to chgomom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep, I have to avoid all the shampoos, conditioners, soaps etc. with wheat germ oil, barley extract or oat bran (plus all the ones high in salicylates, but that's another story). They will cause hives and rashes and insane itching. I guess it's time you looked for new personal care products!
