ARCHIVED Overweight Before I Was Diagnosed. Has Anyone Lost Weight Since Going Gluten Free?
Ursa Major replied to jacklyn1981's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yep, I have! I was just getting heavier and heavier, while it seemed I was eating less and less, because my husband was constantly remarking on me gaining weight, and 'obviously' eating too much. Since I went gluten free I've lost nearly 30 pounds, and hope to lose another 60 or so. It's slow going, as I've had too much stress and haven't had the energy... -
ARCHIVED Is It Just Me? But Some Of This Stuff Seems A Bit Overkill.
Ursa Major replied to jacklyn1981's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Jacklyn, and welcome to this board. You've gotten great advice this far. By the way, I am one of those overweight celiacs, and kept gaining and gaining. I've finally started losing weight when I went gluten-free. Mind you, any starch will make me gain weight, which seems to be common with overweight celiacs. A few more things you need to be aware... -
ARCHIVED Putting Topic At The Top Of A Forum
Ursa Major replied to TCA's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
TCA, why don't you send Scott a PM to ask him about this? His nick here is just 'admin'. I don't believe that we make stickies out of everything by pinning threads, though. Because stickies always stay on the top, no matter how many responses (or any responses) they get. The pinned threads move according to responses. The good thing about the way we... -
ARCHIVED Liver Cause Of Celiac Did Anyone See This Site?!
Ursa Major replied to Webcrystal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Of course, it is nonsense that you can cure celiac disease by a liver cleanse. And of course, there is no way gallbladder and liver stones cause celiac disease, how then do they account for babies and small children having celiac disease? There is no way they have any stones anywhere yet. Mind you, there is (as so often in big lies) some truth to be found... -
ARCHIVED Dont Know What To Do
Ursa Major replied to taz sharratt's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Me too! -
Actually, the liquid Immodium contains gluten, the pills have corn (which is important to know if you're intolerant to corn as well, as I am). I think the pills are probably safe while pregnant. But to be sure I'd check with your doctor. Read the ingredients of fiberchoice. If it is all natural fiber (which you can get in food, too) without any chemicals...

ARCHIVED Ta-da! I'm New!
Ursa Major replied to justjane's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Jane, and welcome to our board. Yes, you have been off gluten too long for testing to mean anything. But I say your improvements speak volumes. Your asthma went away off gluten, that's fabulous! That in itself is a good enough reason to stay away from gluten forever, and is all the evidence you really need. Keep up the good work! -
Try drinking prune juice, or eating prunes. That has always worked for me (until I figured out I'm intolerant to those ). It is healthy and works like a charm within a few hours.

ARCHIVED Newbie With Story & Some Questions
Ursa Major replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Alabama girl, and welcome to our board. You don't sound crazy at all, in fact, you're at least gluten intolerant, and probably have celiac disease. There is no point in official testing any more, as after being gluten-free for a while, all the tests would come back a false negative anyway, unless you'd go back to eating gluten for at least six months before... -
I am glad to hear you are on your way to recovery, and all while our discussion here went on!

ARCHIVED Is This An Odd Comment Or Not?
Ursa Major replied to floridanative's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
All I read in this comment was, that she thought that since your mother was fine the first time, it was safe to go back there, rather than risk her getting sick somewhere else. Of course, YOU know that wasn't the cause of them eating three nights at the same place, but your friend doesn't. I do think her comment also indicates that she would possibly... -
That is a misconception, that has been perpetuated way too long. Our bodies will regulate themselves, and never overheat to where it becomes dangerous, unless poisoned. Even convulsions aren't necessarily cause for concern, and don't cause any damage (which is contrary to what 'everybody knows', I know). Only if the fever goes above 104 F should you do something...

ARCHIVED Anyone Fly Air Canada
Ursa Major replied to elonwy's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
As far as I know they don't have a gluten-free menu option now. In fact, you have to buy everything you eat now (they come around with their cart, and take only cash, if you want something to eat). A snack is at least $2.00, and the lunch choices are $5.00 and up. The only thing that still comes with the cost of the flight is non-alcoholic drinks. I looked... -
Guhlia, unless you're absolutely miserable, with a terrible headache, you would do well to leave the fever alone. It is there for a reason, the heat will kill whatever makes you sick, it's your immune system that is producing the fever! The fever isn't a problem, it's a symptom. Try attacking the cause, by taking garlic, echinacea, vitamin C, vitamin A, Zinc...

ARCHIVED Anyone Have A Good Explanation For Celiac
Ursa Major replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was as thin as a stick as a child, teenager and young adult. But when I was pregnant for the first time, I started gaining weight, without ever being able to lose any, no matter what I tried. The only time I ever lost some weight was some years ago, when I went on a high protein/low carb diet for a few weeks (which meant very little starch, including bread... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Stomach Cancer
Ursa Major replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
For anybody who follows this link: It will bring you to the main site, you have to click on the left on 'Health News' to get to the article. Well, what caught my eye is, that 'white bread is hard to digest', and another said that ice cream is giving her trouble! Sounds to me like they have a gene causing celiac disease, which causes stomach cancer in... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Snowshoe Or Cross Country Ski?
Ursa Major replied to frenchiemama's topic in Sports and Fitness
You might want to look at the L.L.Bean website for snowshoes. Open Original Shared Link They also have cross country skis, just click on the other tab. I've done both cross country skiing and snowshoeing many years ago (before I got too sick for either), and it's great fun and excellent exercise. And really not hard to do! -
ARCHIVED Help .. How Do I Know When To Stop Seizure Meds ?
Ursa Major replied to marciab's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Good for you, Armetta! That should give Marcia some hope, I'm sure. Marcia, I was on 50 mg of codeine contin (12-hour-release) twice a day for four years, and often had to take 100mg at night (which was permitted). That just took the edge off the pain, barely enough to function. Many times I had to supplement that with extra strength Tylenol, when the... -
I forgot to add, that you should eat meat other than fish, and eggs, too. The people who wrote this aren't right in everything, one thing were they're dead wrong is that vegetarianism is a good idea.

ARCHIVED Do You Have To Be Anemic To Have celiac disease?
Ursa Major replied to BeckyW's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Becky, most celiacs are initially dairy intolerant.........some can have dairy again after about a year, when the villi are healed enough to produce lactase to digest the dairy. The bloating could be due to dairy, even off gluten. Try eliminating dairy and see if that helps. Why don't you have your daughter sign up here as well, and post in the teen... -
ARCHIVED Nylon Cooking Utensils Ok For Gluten & Gluten-free?
Ursa Major replied to emcmaster's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If they're very scratched, it wouldn't be a good idea. But if they're smooth, it's probably okay. Of course, if in doubt, or if you find that you have problems, just buy your own and colour code them. That would also make it easier to not by mistake use the same spoon in gluten and gluten-free foods when cooking. -
ARCHIVED Help .. How Do I Know When To Stop Seizure Meds ?
Ursa Major replied to marciab's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks, Zoey is a sweetie for sure! I am still getting better, and may never be entirely well. 52 years of damage is a lot. But I am a lot better than I was a year ago! And I am off all pain killers (except for having to take one maybe once every three weeks or so, when I have eaten something wrong). Well, rather than biting it off, you could just... -
ARCHIVED Shampoo
Ursa Major replied to lightningfoot speakin words's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Try Dove shampoo, that's what I use and it's great. -
Well, you would be left with a very simple diet. You don't need fruit for fibre, eat veggies instead. To get rid of yeast overgrowth, you don't have to eliminate fruit, juice, sugars and starches forever, just until you're better! You might get special natural meds from the naturopath or homeopath to speed up the process. I have a book called 'Prescription...

ARCHIVED Help .. How Do I Know When To Stop Seizure Meds ?
Ursa Major replied to marciab's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Marcia, you're right, you could have been glutened by the peanuts. But it could also be that it was withdrawal symptoms. I know that the amount of medication you were taking was very small. But would you be able to split that in half again, and take an even smaller amount for a while? You might need to do that before going entirely off the meds. In my...
