  1. Hi Amanda, and welcome to this board. Well, as your villi are healing, you're starting to absorb nutrients again. Not just the ones your body wants, but also the ones you're intolerant to. So, new intolerances (or at least you weren't aware of them before) are showing up. Most people with celiac disease are intolerant to dairy at first, but many can tolerate...
  2. Hi, well, I am certainly no child either , but I used to get canker sores while consuming gluten, and haven't had any since going gluten-free.
  3. Hi, and welcome to this board. As Beverly said, your symptoms sound awfully familiar. I had to diagnose myself as well, because the doctors didn't believe I could have celiac disease, because I was gaining weight, instead of losing it. They are just too ignorant. You need to not just eliminate wheat and lactose from your diet, but all gluten (wheat, rye...
  4. Jerry, it certainly is consistent with celiac disease. Before I had chronic D last summer, I used to have alternating D and constipation. And I mean for a long time, in fact, most of my life.
  5. A member with the nick eaw58 meant to post the following reply, but hit the 'report' button instead. So, I have copied her reply from the pm to the moderators, and I am pasting it here: Report: My 16 year old son was diagnosed with Celiac July '05. He's been exceptionally good as staying off gluten because he wants to grow and because he feels better...
  6. But it says: Wheat or corn gluten, what about rye and barley gluten? It says nothing about them!
  7. Autumn, I was painfully thin as a child (a real stick figure ), but once I got pregnant for the first time, I just kept gaining and gaining, no matter what I tried. I started out with being 120 lbs. at the age of 26, to being 238 lbs last year in October. Nobody would believe me that I wasn't eating too much, because 'the evidence proved otherwise' (it...
  8. Cathy, I didn't figure it out until last year, when I was 52. And if I hadn't gone into full-blown celiac then (not confirmed, but my doctors agree), I would likely have lived with the fibromyalgia and IBS diagnosis, and taking codeine 24 hours a day for the rest of my life. I am not feeling all that great yet, but yes, I am soooooooooo much better! When...
  9. Actually, unfortunately, there will be no 'poof' experience usually. Did I understand you right that you only cut out wheat? If that is true, he is still not off gluten, which could be your problem. You need to cut out wheat, rye, barley and oats. And not just in food, but personal care products as well. Any shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion etc. that contains...
  10. Hi, and welcome to this board. Well, you ARE seeing results! But sometimes the GI problems take a while to clear up, as his intestines need to heal. Also, he might be dairy intolerant, too. In that case, dairy could cause many of the same symptoms as gluten, including diarrhea.
  11. How long has she been gluten free? While I agree that she should be tested for a bladder infection and diabetes, to be safe, it could also be that now other intolerances are showing up. I also agree that her diet may be too high in carbs. You might want to replace some of those carb foods with veggies and good protein sources. As for the juice causing...
  12. Oh no, not another one of those social types! Just kidding. But it seems that maybe I shouldn't come to you to have anything technical fixed.
  13. I just wanted to point out that gluten CAN cause hives, as it is one of my symptoms when glutened. But I also agree that it sounds like they're gluten and dairy intolerant. I hope you'll get it all figured out!
  14. I agree with Deb. Just try the gluten-free diet and see if it helps. Something obviously needs to be done!
  15. Hi Sandy, and welcome to our board. I read what you wrote, and it almost made me cry. I wished that all mothers would think the way you do, so that children with problems would be loved the way God meant for them to be loved. A lot of suffering could be prevented.
  16. I didn't know that allergists do celiac testing, are you sure about that? celiac disease is not an allergy, and won't show up on any skin tests. In fact, it is unlikely even wheat will show up (even though sometimes it does). Your daughter both sound an awful lot like they have celiac disease. All their symptoms are common ones. Who they REALLY need to...
  17. If you had your blood test done after being a month off gluten, it is almost guaranteed to be negative, even if you have celiac disease. Meaning it could very well be a false negative, and means nothing. Even a WEEK off gluten can produce false negatives, never mind a month! Your doctor should have known better. And after a month of gluten-free a biopsy...
  18. Hi, and welcome to this board. Yes, I agree with Sherri, you sound an awful lot like you may have celiac disease, and should be tested. And you're right in not going off gluten before testing. If you would go gluten-free now, your tests could very well come out falso negative, and you still wouldn't know whats going on. Even though, of course, if you'd...
  19. Hi Cathy, how were you diagnosed, with blood work and biopsy? Some doctors want that distinction removed, as they say that the only difference is more damage has been done when you have full blown celiac disease. But with gluten intolerance you'll eventually get to that stage unless going gluten-free. So, the difference is just in degree and therefore no...
  20. Hi, and welcome to this board. Yes, he could definitely get a reaction two days later! Sometimes it takes me a whole week for the diarrhea to start after getting glutened. A lot of people get a delayed reaction. A whole bun contains a lot of gluten, even a crumb could have caused a reaction.
  21. Well, some other common things Aspies get misdiagnosed with are: Borderline Personality Disorder, Schizophrenia and Bipolar. Your scores on the AQ and EQ could indicate AS instead. Hey, AS is not a disorder, really, it is a DIFFERENCE. I'd rather have AS any day than somebody telling me I have Borderline Personality Disorder (whatever their crazy definition...
  22. I showed a marked improvement by the next day. Until my other intolerances reared their ugly heads three months later. I am much better now, but may never get completely well due to being diagnosed so late in life.
  23. Jessica, your cakes sure sound awfully nice! Smunkeemom, I love that 'doggy' cake, cute! Why can't you say the name? Christine, she may have forgotten, it would definitely be best to check with your friend. But I can't imagine her having a problem with a gluten free cake, especially if it will be the only cake you will be able to eat at the wedding...
  24. Yep, made me laugh for sure!
  25. The REAL, black, coarse pumpernickel bread (the German kind) is made from rye without wheat. Try eating that as well as barley. And while you're at it, have some for me, it used to be my favourite bread!
