  1. This is my take on the situation. When I eat things I am intolerant to (including getting glutened by accident), especially fruit, first of all, I will usually get constipated, but also, I feel like I am getting a bladder infection! When I get that awful burning when peeing, that means often that I ate too much fruit (or other things containing salicylates...
  2. Don't feel dumb about it! It is good to be able to vent, and to get some encouragement from others in the same boat. That is what this forum is about, learning how to deal with celiac disease, and encouraging each other.
  3. As unexplained weight GAIN is a common symptom of celiac disease as well, yes, lots of people lose weight on the gluten free diet, me included. I was also very bloated, with swollen ankles, feet and hands. The bloating and swelling subsided within a week on the gluten-free diet, and I am slowly losing the rest of the excess weight. Don't expect overnight...
  4. The best thing would be to talk to your boss and explain your situation to him. Ask which restaurant it will be, and tell him that you will talk to the manager to see what can be done to get a nice meal set up for you, too. Then, you WILL need to call the manager of the restaurant........and yes, you may have to go and talk to him in person, because...
  5. I saw a huge difference within one day, but apparently, I am an exception. I hope you see an obvious improvement within the two weeks. It's easier to keep it up if you see results. Also, if you have only been staying away from wheat, you haven't been gluten free and it doesn't really count. I hope you can manage to keep it up, and feel better!
  6. Hi Kelly. Yes, I am sure it's celiac disease related. Hang in there, you've almost made it to your test date (my birthday )! After the biopsy is taken, go gluten free immediately, as you should be gluten-free no matter what the endoscopy says. I am sure the rash will start getting better as soon as you stop eating gluten. I used to get rashes (including...
  7. That is very cute! My one daughter and her husband gave me that book for Christmas. Too bad it's almost useless to me now, that I found out about all the other intolerances.
  8. It seems to me that your diet is already too high in fiber, and too low in fats. You need to drink lots (and prune juice would be a good idea, as well as lots of water). You should also eat more fat. By the way, I find I get VERY constipated when I don't get enough protein! And I am talking animal protein here, not beans, they make things worse. If I don...
  9. I doubt that being vegan caused celiac disease. Even though I think the vegan diet is very unhealthy. All the things you are allergic to are high in lectins (to find out more, click on the link on lectins in my signature). I was never on a vegan diet, I never had a lot of soy and didn't eat a lot of wheat, as I much prefer rye (it's a German thing, sourdough...
  10. Yes, the headache and sore throat could definitely come from being glutened. Those are two symptoms I get as well. Take it as a learning experience. It's hard to do it perfectly at the beginning, and after years of just leaving the house without much planning, it takes a while to remember that you can't just pop into a burger place to eat. You'll get the...
  11. Open Original Shared Link Here you go, Rachel. Lisa, I am awfully sorry for your troubles with your family and doctors. But it looks like at least your doctor trouble can be solved now, and that is good. Fortunately, my family is not too bad, and especially extended families, like aunts and cousins etc. are really good about my celiac disease. But I...
  12. Well, the safest way is to buy nuts in the shell and crack them yourself. You can be sure they're gluten free that way. Other than that, I am not sure, I rarely dare to eat most nuts.
  13. Momofthree is right, that any posts have to first be read and approved by a moderator and then pinned to go to the front of a topic. If it says 'moved', that means you posted in the wrong forum for your topic, and it was not only pinned by a moderator, but also moved to the right forum. To find your posts again, there are two things you can do: If it...
  14. Your skin problem could be DH (dermatitis herpetiformis), which is caused by gluten. The only treatment that really works is being on a gluten free diet, unfortunately. Meds sometimes sort of work, but they don't fix anything. Gluten can cause hives, too, as well as psoriasis, eczema and other skin conditions. You could try a homeapathic eczema cream, mine...
  15. The owner of the health food store I go to to buy things like buckwheat, told me that I could eat that bread, because even though it was made from wheat, it was sprouted and that made it safe for people with celiac disease! That was right after I figured out I have celiac disease, and she really confused me. But I had my doubts, so I didn't buy any. Now...
  16. Well, initially you may find you get more intolerances. But after about a year on the gluten-free diet, some of those should clear up. I have been gluten-free for only eight months myself, so I am still hoping for that. I am not too optimistic though, because I've had the symptoms caused by the other intolerances since I was a child. Plus, I found out about...
  17. It is possible that they dust the conveyer belts the marshmallows go over when processed/packaged etc. with wheat flour, so they don't stick. It's a common practice for all kinds of products. It's enough to make you sick, but not enough for them to be forced to put 'wheat' into the ingredients list.
  18. Hi Margie, and welcome to our board. Wow, you sure sound like you have DH, and you obviously have celiac disease. Personally, I think you're absolutely right to go for a skin biopsy, if you want an official diagnosis. But your husband is right, too. Unless you need a piece of paper, stating officially that you have celiac disease, I would just go on the...
  19. Hi Elizabeth, and welcome to this board. Leaky gut syndrome is one of the symptoms of celiac disease! So, if you actually have celiac disease (and it sounds like you do), you definitely have leaky gut as well. It should get better on the gluten-free diet, but could take about a year to clear up (possibly longer). Being low fat is a terrible idea for...
  20. You're only on vacation in the US? Do you have a permanent residence in Canada? If the answer is 'yes' to both, I believe you may still be insured by whatever your provincial insurance is. Check with the appropriate authorities (or have somebody check for you here in Canada). I think you might have to pay the US doctors up front, send the bill into your Canadian...
  21. What exactly was part of your bloodwork? I know that doctors often claim that you can have false positives, but I believe that isn't true. You CAN have false negatives, however. Anemia is often the ONLY obvious symptom for celiac disease. Many people with anemia have been diagnosed with it, and they never had any gastrointestinal symptoms. If your biopsy...
  22. What is wrong with these doctors? If the older brother has confirmed celiac disease, and she has all the symptoms of it, how can they be so ignorant and diagnose IBS? That is a junk diagnosis, anyway, as there is a REASON for a bowel to be 'irritated', and they're too lazy to figure out what it is. If I was you, I would just put your daughter on the gluten...
  23. I react to soy much the same as to gluten. And in fact, soy can destroy the villi as well.
  24. Sometimes I get a terrible itch in my throat, and yes, inside the torso as well. It's maddening when it happens.
  25. My son-in-law and one of my daughters were diagnosed to be intolerant to sugar. I don't believe my son-in-law has celiac disease, my daughter may have it. I think it is an entirely separate issue from celiac disease, as in a true intolerance or allergy, and you should probably avoid it for life (of course, I might be wrong, but your experience seems to verify...
