ARCHIVED Becoming More Sensitive Over Time?
NatureChick replied to BlessedMommy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Never had fever as part of my reaction. But not being able to regulate body temperature is a symptom of hormone/thyroid problems. I'm not saying it couldn't be a gluten reaction, but it could also be other things as well because hormones and thyroid can be thrown off by things other than gluten. -
First, I'll share some hope that symptoms can resolve within days or weeks. Years would be the less-common scenario and often is indicative of some other unknown factor. Also, it really does take just a few months before you can be one of those people who rarely gets glutened. When I first started, I thought that it was going to be impossible. Now, staying...

ARCHIVED Is This A Huge Issue?
NatureChick replied to Waitingindreams's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I greatly dislike how much pressure is put on people using this forum to get endoscopies and follow-up testing. My two cents on endoscopies: Pros: • Can compare damage and healing with follow-up tests. Helpful if you're part of the small percentage that doesn't seem to heal. Cons: • Have to have an invasive hospital procedure that requires anesthesia. •... -
ARCHIVED Developing Food Allergies After Being Gluten Free
NatureChick replied to sweetsailing's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
One of the symptoms of severe B12 deficiencies is a burning sensation in your mouth. It would come and go depending on what you are eating, but not in the way you are thinking. If this were your problem, yes, a deficiency created by malabsorption issues before going gluten-free could linger or get worse 8 months after going gluten-free, especially if you... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed 5 Years Ago, No Symptoms. I Don't Care Anymore.
NatureChick replied to elliott34's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Speaking from the point of view of someone who was already in their forties when they figured out that it was gluten that was the problem, I can only advise you to stick with a gluten-free diet to avoid the hell that I went through. Though I didn't have any noticeable symptoms in my 20s (aside from having a fantastic figure despite eating anything I wanted... -
ARCHIVED I Gave Up Waiting For Insurance Approval...
NatureChick replied to Georgia-guy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
gluten-free soap and shampoo in the bathroom to keep it out of your eyes when bathing. Otherwise, anything plastic, wood, or with a non-stick coating in your kitchen should be replaced. I've heard of people sanding down cutting boards. The toaster oven has got to go too. Mesh colanders have to go, but it you have one of the metal ones with the big holes,... -
I'd make a run over to the grocery store that does carry gluten-free items now so that you have some options to help you avoid feeling deprived, but long-term, you'll get good at cooking from scratch from whole ingredients that are naturally gluten-free, and get good at buying enough pre-made foods to last for a month or two. They are more likely to be items...

ARCHIVED Changing Reaction, Normal?
NatureChick replied to CajunChic's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My reactions have changed over time. Right after going gluten-free, my reaction to minute amounts seemed to be much stronger. But that seemed to have gone away after I got good at staying gluten-free and my immune system was less amped up. I still have one or two tell-tale symptoms that let me know that something was contaminated but nothing that disrupts... -
ARCHIVED Minimisation By Family/friends.
NatureChick replied to Chrissie32's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is human nature not to like to have other people tell us that we are wrong, even it that is a simple as trying to share information they may not otherwise have reason to learn. But when it comes to food, people seem to be even more particular. My guess is that in a few months, you'll be tired of talking about gluten as well and it will rarely come... -
ARCHIVED Odd Findings In Toilet (Help?! - Warning, Gross)
NatureChick replied to Waitingindreams's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I used to get this occasionally. The first few times I saw it it was a little freaky and I worried. But then I realized that I could trace it back directly to a food that I had eaten - ice cream. That makes perfect sense considering that before going gluten-free, my body's ability to digest food was pretty minimal. But it also happened a few times months... -
ARCHIVED Joint Pain After Being gluten-free 2 Years - Could Celiac Still Be Causing That?
NatureChick replied to nvsmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I used to have hip pain that was so bad that i could barely walk and pain killers couldn't even take the edge off. Fluoride turned out to be the problem for me. I got it out of my medicine cabinet and quit drinking tap water and haven't had hip pain in years. Of course, hip pain can have lots of different causes, but don't forget to consider other things... -
ARCHIVED What's In Your Kitchen Kit?
NatureChick replied to BlessedMommy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have a whole variety of cooler sizes. A cutting board is a MUST. I have a little one that is about 6 x 8 that fits into even my smallest cooler - love it. But I agree that for most circumstances, you don't need an entire kit so much as a couple of items to make life easier and you can always pilfer from your own kitchen for the day. I can imagine all... -
ARCHIVED Did Your Vitamin D Levels Go Up?
NatureChick replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I find it practically impossible to raise my vitamin D levels using supplements alone. I have both 5,000 I.U. and 1,000 I.U. and take them interchangeably with full meals that have a variety of food types but they don't seem to make much difference. Sorry, but I'm not sure where my latest test results are to see the numbers but I think I remember them only... -
ARCHIVED A Few Unrelated Questions About celiac disease/ncgs
NatureChick replied to sidelined's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The only time I worry about breathing in gluten is when there is noticeable dust in the air. That means bakeries. I also left a restaurant when they sat us at the bar where they were making pizzas right on the other side of a low counter. If I had been seated further away, the dust in the air probably wouldn't have been a problem, but I'd still have to think... -
ARCHIVED Should-Wheat-Be-Reclassified-Pathogen
NatureChick replied to kenlove's topic in Publications & Publicity
I see no reason for a redefining of the word pathogen. We already have plenty of terms that cover gluten, such as toxic or poisonous that already clearly define its role. -
ARCHIVED Newbie - Where Do I Fall On The Spectrum?
NatureChick replied to kaytuh's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That language about villii damage having other possible causes sounds like the lab covering their asses so that they can't be sued. Likely a computer is set to automatically add that text based on a check box being clicked somewhere. But go get yourself checked for vitamin deficiencies too. Celiac and malabsorption of nutrients go hand-in-hand, making deficiencies...- 5 replies

I'd recommend keeping low expectations. I told my sister first and ended up getting a nasty email from her the next day. But she's smart and after she got past the initial shock, went gluten-free herself. I still feel guilty because her reactions to cross contamination are much worse than mine, but we did just have a conversation recently about how we wonder...

ARCHIVED Events Following My Diagnosis Now Shattered
NatureChick replied to Nlcurl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree that the more removed you are from the cooking, the riskier it is to eat it. And I know I felt really deprived early on. Being reminded that you can't participate in what others are enjoying does suck big time. But remind yourself that it isn't a matter of not being able to have something, just losing the convenience of having others prepare it for... -
If you haven't been tested for vitamin deficiencies, I'd do that right away. Malabsorption seems highly likely. Also, don't forget to look at chemicals that are known to cause digestive problems. There was some doctor who tested artificial food colorings and found that all seven that he tested caused digestive damage. And some people have had allergic reactions...

ARCHIVED Am I Going Through A Gluten Withdrawal?
NatureChick replied to bren024's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The hives are not a gluten withdrawal symptom though it can be a reaction to ingesting gluten. I don't really remember what the symptoms of withdrawal were other than being REALLY tired for weeks. I was sleeping 2-3 hours more than normal a day, and I generally didn't want to do anything. But I was also feeling great because some of my worst symptoms had... -
ARCHIVED Sit Down Dinner Wedding Reception Help!
NatureChick replied to GFDonna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would presume that any food at a catered event is susceptible to cross contamination even if all of the ingredients in a dish were gluten free. I had to do this last summer. I ended up eating before the wedding reception and after and only drinking beverages while I was there. Fortunately, it is fairly easy to get up and move around at a big event like... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge = Havoc On My Body!
NatureChick replied to Kelsie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What you are describing sounds very familiar to me, either before going gluten-free when I was at my worst, or right after when I was still getting minor contaminations. I'm not one of those people who thinks that you HAVE to have a positive celiac test result in order to take being gluten free seriously, but now that you've already started, you may was... -
ARCHIVED Problems Feeling Full After Going gluten-free?
NatureChick replied to tonalynn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had problems with not producing bile before going gluten-free, but it improved afterwards. I also had some vitamin deficiencies that were caused by malabsorption that seemed to contribute to digestive problems so if you haven't been tested for them already, I'd do it, especially because deficiencies can cause intense cravings. But I did want to remind... -
ARCHIVED Getting The Right Nutrition?
NatureChick replied to strings's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sushi is the only thing I have managed to eat out without getting glutened so I think you are smart to start there. Some people seem to be able to handle the cross contamination that is inevitable when a restaurant makes food. I cannot so I've generally given up. Otherwise, most foods are gluten free before they are processed and combined with other ingredients... -
ARCHIVED New Study Questions Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity - Care2.com
NatureChick replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Though lots of people visit the care2 site, it is just a blog and not journalism so the write ups are often greatly lacking.
