  1. I concur that drinking lots of water helps, but would add to get more sleep than normal.
  2. My take on that list of symptoms is that, on their own, they could be anything, but combined, make a food intolerance a likely suspect, with gluten high on the list. Just don't go gluten free before testing is completed. And best of luck.
  3. I eat just about anything I want - just a gluten free version of it, and if I can't buy it premade, make it myself. The more variety in my diet, the more nutrients and micro nutrients my body gets. The trick to not feeling deprived when out in the world is to come prepared with your own foods that are as good if not better. And nine times out of ten, I...
  4. Though you didn't say what your digestive issues were, my stomach pains were actually a symptoms of a B12 deficiency easily fixed with a supplement. If you've already had vitamin and mineral testing done, the "normal" range for B12 in the U.S. is too low with 200 being considered normal. According to the lab that did my tests, symptoms can arise with levels...
  5. Because you say that you already prepare all of your own foods from scratch, I'd recommend doing a food/symptom diary in combination with a rotation diet. And in this case, I'd probably keep note of what you use to prepare food as well just in case something in your kitchen became contaminated without you realizing it. When choosing foods to eat on your...
  6. There are all sorts of things that can cause interstitial cystitis and it can be caused by bacteria even if tests don't show evidence of an infection. For instance if you are a carrier of group B strep (a third of the population is) then it could have phases where it can have overgrowth and can irritate the lining of the bladder. The first two things I...
  7. I try to keep in mind that the more ingredients a product has, the higher the chances of one of those ingredients being cross contaminated. I rarely buy anything that lists more than 6-8 ingredients, and if I do, it is only products that are being sold as gluten free and say so right on the front of the package.
  8. I feel your pain. After decades of randomly losing weight really fast without even trying, I was not prepared for actually being able to gain weight. At one point, I started working out in earnest and started tracking my calories in hopes of losing the few pounds I had put on. But losing the weight was really slow and if felt as if I had to work way too...
  9. The high calorie foods that make me gain weight are nuts, quacamole and corn chips, pan-popped popcorn with butter, anything I make that has cream sauce, mashed potatoes, and potato salad ... basically, anything that is easy to eat mindlessly or tastes so good you eat too much of it.
  10. I just presume that restaurants are unable to serve a gluten free meal, no matter the ingredients, simply because their kitchens are contaminated. Though I don't doubt that it could be possible to cook a gluten-free meal in just about any kitchen if the proper precautions were taken, I don't presume that any chef has the knowledge to do it properly, or...
  11. My guess is that you're not getting any responses because, at this point in time, joint popping is considered to be normal. It isn't a medical symptom, doesn't cause any damage, and there is no treatment needed unless you have pain, swelling, or a joint gets stuck, which you didn't mention as being an issue.
  12. I can't speak for children or your daughter's issues specifically, but gluten definitely affected my hearing. An ear ache was one of my more painful symptoms and still arises when I get glutened. When I went gluten-free, my hearing improved within days but I had a phantom ringing noise in my left ear for the first two months before it finally faded. Though...
  13. Don't forget about gluten free shampoos, body washes, makeup.
  14. The previous comments seem right on the money to me, but I'd add that if you are still eating out, at all, that you are very likely getting glutened. The only restaurants I would consider safer would be those that have very few gluten items on their menu. I've had some luck with my local sushi place because, though they have items like tempura on their menu...
  15. Granted, this is specific to your situation, but I have to ask, why do you think you need to have your doctor's office have on record that you have an official celiac diagnosis? Is there something specific that you need them to do for you right now that would require an official diagnosis? And if you can think of a reason, is it something that you NEED, versus...
  16. Icelandgirl. You are already doing exactly what you need to do - educating yourself so that you can take control of your health! Too many people rely on doctors entirely to tell them what to do, but we can't expect them to know us as well as we know ourselves. I personally wouldn't do a gluten challenge unless my life depended on it. You already have a...
  17. Lemons are also supposed to be extremely effective for lowering acidity. I just opened a bottle of lemonade after typing that, though I also make my own from time to time so that I can have a less-sugary version. And because you mention both ginger and honey, I presume that you make ginger tea? Love it. I dice the ginger and throw it in a tea ball to make...
  18. Great to hear that you've already done so much research and aren't just relying on a doctor's advice. But the fact that honey helps makes me think that the problem would have a bacterial factor as well. I presume your doctor has already tested you for h pylori. Getting gut flora in good shape can be difficult but the good news is that it can change drastically...
  19. NPR had an article about the best gluten free flour a while back and they came up with their own recipe, and recommended King Arthur brand. Here is the link to their flour recipe which is pretty close to the King Arthur blend. Open Original Shared Link I personally don't care for the gums - xanthum gum and guar gum. They are super condensed fiber that...
  20. Loved the rant. They always make me feel better, living vicariously through other people's venting. But while I'm commenting, you may want to do some more research into ulcers because I don't think your doctor has you doing the right thing with the bland diet. For starters, I'd research foods that are natural anti-inflammatories - berries, garlic and...
  21. Wines are known for causing reactions, though gluten is not the problem. Many of them contain so many ingredients that it would be impossible to guess what was causing a reaction when no ingredients are listed. Here is a link to an article that talks about why vintners don't list ingredients. And grapes are often a crop that is doused heavily in pesticides...
  22. Depends on what kind of colander you have. If it is plastic or is one of those kinds that are fine mesh - I'd toss it or find a way to reuse it elsewhere. (I used my old mesh one to sift for fossils in a river near me.) If it is one of those metal ones with the big holes, you should be able to get it clean pretty easily. I got new cutting boards but I...
  23. I've seen 1/2 piece of bread every day for twelve weeks, two pieces a day for 6-8 weeks, and have heard of people having positive results after just two weeks. I've never done a gluten challenge but suspect that I was going in and out of being gluten free before I officially went gluten free, just because when I shop and cook for myself, I always avoided...
  24. I've been glutened by sausages made by my grocer's butcher but not by packaged meats. I don't know if I've just been lucky or if the brands I buy simply don't have any gluten ingredients in any of their products that could cause cross contamination on equipment. I'd check out what other products that manufacturer makes in order to see if there is something...
  25. Not saying that it is the only cause, but Interstial Cystitis is often related to group b strep, for which about a third of the population are carriers. Drinking lots of water is often all that needs to be done in order to keep the bacteria from getting a hold and growing in abundance to the point where it caused symptoms. Group B strep is not something that...
