ARCHIVED Hormel Chilli
Idahogirl posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have never seen Hormel Chilli w/beans listed or talked about as gluten-free, but their website assures that it is. I used to love Nalley chilli, and I thought I would just have to give up chilli & cheese dip, but Hormel chilli is very comparable. It is good as a dip or on nachos or baked potatoes. The other chillis that are gluten-free like Stagg... -
ARCHIVED Tinkyada
Idahogirl replied to Nantzie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The first gluten-free pasta I had was a box meal, with some kind of dark noodles (rice noodles I think) and it was rubbery and had a really weird aftertaste. So when I tried Tinkyada I was very skeptical. But it was sooo good! I overcooked it, but I didn't care! I would rather have overcooked normal pasta than perfectly cooked nasty stuff! It is so great... -
ARCHIVED Cream Soup Substitues
Idahogirl replied to Claire's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Follow the link at the top of this string, and they have tons of other recipes. It's under the bread section. Made the pizza for the second time last night, and it turned out excellent! Better than last time, since it was too thick the first time. You can also make breadsticks. Lisa -
ARCHIVED Inactive Ingredients
Idahogirl replied to tofu8grrrl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You may want to call the company. I don't think otc drugs have the same requirements in ingredient listings as food. At least that is what have been told. Even if all the ingredients check out, they may not be listing fillers or something. I think some drug companies purchase their fillers from a third party supplier, and they can change from time to... -
ARCHIVED Cream Soup Substitues
Idahogirl replied to Claire's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I haven't tried the cream soups yet (still have some Progresso to thicken and use up!). But I tried the Favorite White Bread recipe and the Pizza Crust recipe from the site posted. The white bread turned out okay, a little dry and cracky compared to Pamela's Amazing Wheat-Free mix. The pizza crust turned out great-didn't even seem like I was eating gluten... -
ARCHIVED Bread Machines- Help Me Choose?
Idahogirl replied to fordido's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have the Sunbeam $39.95 model (got it at Wal-Mart). I've made two loaves so far, and they've turned out fine. Didn't even seem to stress the machine. I've heard the heavy duty ones are better since gluten-free bread is tougher on the motor, but I got mine as a birthday present and it seems to be doing the job just fine so far. -
I have been going to McDonald's lately, and I noticed they have a dedicated fryer. It doesn't seem like cross-contamination would be much of an issue since the workers' hands never actually touch the fries. I haven't had a reaction yet. Has anyone had a problem with McDonald's?

ARCHIVED Cream Soup Substitues
Idahogirl replied to Claire's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Have you tried any other recipes from that site? I am going to try the Favorite White Bread and the Pizza Crust for starters. I'm so excited to try them out! The creamed soup will be a lot cheaper this way. I have been using Progresso Creamy Mushroom with Corn Starch as a thickener, but the Progresso is much more expensive than the $.56 Wal-Mart brand... -
ARCHIVED Contaminated Am I Gonna Miscarry?
Idahogirl replied to Neva's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I can identify with your situation! The hardest calls to make are when you don't know if it has gluten for sure. I did the same thing this weekend with sour cream. I really needed it on my super-spicy enchiladas, so I took the risk. Afterwards, I sat at the computer frantically googling it trying to find out if it had gluten. I had the same nagging feeling... -
ARCHIVED Is A Tiny Amount As Evil As A Pizza?
Idahogirl replied to Random Guy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I read somewhere on here that it takes a month for your small intestine to heal from gluten damage. If it is 5 to 7 days, then having one accident per month wouldn't prevent healing from happening. That was my major concern. All I can say is that come January, my life will be soooo much easier! I'm tired of not being able to tell if a food has gluten... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Know Of A gluten-free Dog Food?
Idahogirl replied to mart's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was wondering about this, too. I just realized that my Beta fish food and my cats food and his treats all have gluten in them. I don't feed the cat anymore, but he still tries to lick my face while I'm sleeping (we're working on this-it really bothers me, but he is so persistent). Price is definitely an issue for us. -
ARCHIVED Is A Tiny Amount As Evil As A Pizza?
Idahogirl replied to Random Guy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The hardest thing for me to grasp is how if only a crumb per month is like not being on the diet at all, then what's the point? Almost everyone here, as careful as they can possibly be, still gets glutened on occasion. I know I got glutened yesterday, but I cannot figure out where the heck from. If that only happens once in a month, then it would seem... -
ARCHIVED Ingredients In Prescriptions
Idahogirl replied to Jen H's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know about prescription medications, but for the prescription prenatal vitamins I have to take, the pharmacist said that the manufacturers buy their fillers from the company who gives them the best deal. So they can't guarantee what is in the fillers. They don't have to notify the pharmacy when it changes, and the pharmacy doesn't have to notify... -
ARCHIVED Food Allergen Labeling Bill
Idahogirl replied to lbarton's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My understanding is if there is wheat "hidden" in natural flavoring or MFS or anything else, it will have to be listed on the label with the new law. So, it would follow that the only thing we will need to look for is barley, rye or oats. Correct me if I'm missing something? The one thing I would be careful of at first is, products produced before... -
ARCHIVED Just Found Out I Have Dh? I Am Desperate Itching
Idahogirl replied to a topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I agree. Dapsone is a miracle drug! I've been on the gluten-free diet for about 3 weeks, and my bumps cleared up about a week ago. And I was miserable, covered in welts. It would hurt if my husband accidentally touched one of my knees. Make sure you have eliminated all sources of gluten. Cross-contamination and household products are easily overlooked... -
My DH was never "blistery" until later on in life. It was always just like a heat rash. It started on only my elbows and knees, then I started getting it on my hands and feet. Now it shows up all the places previously mentioned. It started getting worse after the birth of my son. If you're doing the diet, then I wouldn't worry about it too much....

ARCHIVED Heartland Pasta
Idahogirl replied to lauriel234's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Never heard of it. I have tried the Tinkyada (sp?) pasta and it is the best. It is just like wheat pasta, you can hardly tell the difference. It is not mushy or gummy like regular rice pasta. -
ARCHIVED Lipsticks
Idahogirl replied to Lisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I got a similar vague response from Mary Kay. They couldn't tell me yes or no, just read me something off the computer screen in front of them about "we refer you to your doctor on what is best for you". My doctor says "no gluten". I don't need to ask him! I love MK foundation, it is the only one that works for me, and I just bought 3 bottles, so I don... -
ARCHIVED Kraft "policy" To Not Tell gluten-free Or Not
Idahogirl replied to discountshopper's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What is casein? Does it have anything to do with gluten? I've seen it on a lot of labels, but don't have the slightest what it is. It isn't listed on the forbidden list. Lisa -
ARCHIVED Seattle--gf Friendly Restaurants?
Idahogirl replied to IrishGirl71's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I just called Kaili's Kitchen because I couldn't get to their website, and she said that they are looking for ways to expand, and open new restaurants, and Spokane (about 20 minutes from me) is definitely a future option. I have butterflies in my stomach just imagining having a bacon cheeseburger and fries or onion rings-or pizza! I will begin praying today... -
ARCHIVED Seattle--gf Friendly Restaurants?
Idahogirl replied to IrishGirl71's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I second that!! Man, reading that post sure made me hungry. We travel to Seattle occasionally, it's only a few hours from here. I am definitely going there next time! Maybe there is hope for having a restaurant hamburger and fries in my future!!! I think I'll start planning our next trip right now..... Lisa -
ARCHIVED Think I Wasted My Money .....
Idahogirl replied to Bonnie's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I just got a breadmaker for my birthday, and tried it out last night. First time I've had bread in three weeks. It was wonderful. We used the Pamela's Amazing Wheat Free bread mix. It was so easy to make, and it was yummy. I am having a sandwich today!!! I'm hoping there is a cheaper way to make bread, though. This mix was a lot for just one... -
ARCHIVED Tater Tot Casserole
Idahogirl replied to kevsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The first time I watched it, I kept waiting for a storyline to emerge. So I was disappointed. But the second time, I didn't expect anything, so I was able to laugh and enjoy it. We thought it was funny how they were trying to make fun of Idaho, like people who are stuck in the 80's. Here's my basic recipe for tater tot casserole (don't have exact measurements... -
ARCHIVED Green Bean Casserole... How Do You Make It gluten-free?
Idahogirl replied to Jnkmnky's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I know a lot of grocery stores will order a specific product for you if they don't have it. I have searched high and low for a gluten-free cream of mushroom, but no one around here has one. I have a list of gluten-free mainstream products, and it listed Lipton's (as long as it says "New Recipe" or "More Cheese") They also have a cream of chicken that is... -
Does MSG ever contain gluten? Or is it just something that you avoid? I've noticed that a ton of products contain MSG. Also, I've noticed that a lot of food packages have either "natural flavors" or "modified food starch". That's kind of vague-I wonder how often there is hidden gluten from those sources? Does anyone know from experience? I've heard...
