  1. Thank goodness, it is not just me with these problems. My mother who is 83 has told me for the more than three years that I am going senile. I was afraid I was going senile. I couldn't remember my phone number, my brothers, at work sometimes I can't even remember where I am. It has been slightly better since going gluten-free but I still have it, I feel like I have lost my mind sometimes. I will be talking to someone and all of a sudden I have no clue on what we were talking about.

  2. So it looks like I should move to TO or Van. to enjoy eating out!

Here's where I eat out in Edmonton.

Sorrentinos (italian), they have gluten-free pasta and the servers are extremely knowledgeable. I don't know if all the locations are like this but the one on Calgary Trail is good for sure.

Also, the UrbanDiner in high street (off of Jasper Ave) has really good salads with gluten-free dressings. There too, I've had very knowledgeable staff.

I know the Copper Pot does gluten-free stuff but I can't say I've ever been because they do a lot of seafood and I can't do seafood, but I've heard good things.

And finally, a pizza place, Pizzeria Prego, it only opened this week and they are going to have gluten free pizza available soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's in the Lendrum shopping centre right by Crystill's Wine Market and Sun Terra.

Well that covers this neck of the woods. I know there's someone else on here from Edmonton, so maybe they'll have something to add??

    keep the info coming!

--- As for Swiss Chalet, what can we eat there? Regular chicken or what? I never bothered to check. Why I dunno, cause I used to love that place! DO they actually have a gluten-free menu?

You also have a chinese restuarant in Edmonton, listed on the Celiac site that has gluten-free tamari they use in their foods and they will tell you what foods are or are not gluten-free. If you give them enough time they will make anything you want gluten-free. When we went to my brothers up there for New Years that is their favorite restaurant and I was over joyed that they were gluten-free. They said they changed to have a huge array of gluten-free food because of the Celiacs.

  3. I agree about sending letters to revenue Canada. They took it from a disability rating to a non disability rating. The point that it costs us a great deal, we have to travel (especially in small towns or any provice that doesn't have Toronto of Vancouver in it.) which is all the rest of the provinces. We have to travel all over the place to get our food and all the other things that are entailed in educating ourselves, making and finding our foods. We should either get the disability amount or be able to take our time, gas, wear and tear on the vehicles etc., into play also.

  4. If you are using any flours but wheat, like corn starch, potato, soy etc. you figure out what a kilo of that compared to a kilo of flour (gluten) type is and you claim the difference. I have kept all my receipts and I circle any of the envirokids cereals and bars that I buy. I have cut the front off of a box off of each so that if they ask I have it for proof. Gluten free cereals, bars, and cookies are also deductible.

  5. First it would be based on your family income the percentage for medical expenses which is what this is considered.

Now cornstarch or other flours versus wheat flour. What you have to do is oz or kilo per kilo. So you add up how much your corn starch totally cost and say altogether it came to $15 for a kilo and all purpose flour is $3.00 a kilo. then you subtract the $3.00 from $15.00 which the difference is $12.00. The same if you use other flours or breads. Basically all we can deduct for is flours, breads, but pretty well nothing else which in my books is just wrong.

You can use any 12 month period which adds up to the most. E.G March to march.

  6. McD did not show malice and intent to be misleading. They went by what they were told by the manufacturer of the product, they are not the manufacturer. They are loosely called a restaurant. These lawsuits will only cause problems for all of us in the future. If any restuarant does have a gluten-free menu get prepared to have to sign waivers before eating if these people win.

I am leaving for Jamaica in one week, I know for a fact that the person who booked all of the flights did NOT tell Air Canada about my dietary needs. So, I will bring fruit with me on the plane to eat on the trip. This way I won't be sick because of airplane food. Let's face it airplane food will make most people sick, especially on Air Canada.

  7. The parents should be charged with child endangerment or attempted murder, maybe even Munchausens by Proxy. They kept taking her there and feeding her greasy non nutritious food that made her sick.

Now, as the McD site says their fries "May contain Wheat or Dairy derivatives." That should be enough to make anyone with wheat and dairy problems stand clear.

As Broncobux said the cross contamination issue is probably even bigger.

I remember last year before my dx I did a rare foray to McD's for a hash brown. I saw them not only cook fries, hash-browns but the breaded fish sandwich all in the same fryer. So I would even debate the segregated fryer theory also.

  8. Hi Sage, welcome to the board. Actually there is lots of things you can still eat as long as you don't do prepackaged food and tons of breads. It doesn't have to be expensive but it will be a lot healthier for everyone and easier if you are all gluten-free. It will be tougher on your son in regards to school and such. But there is tons of support on here and good recipes and advice. We have all walked and are all walking the same road.

  9. If you have any allergies to Penicillian don't take it. I was given Cipro and thought my life was going to end. I had taken an antihistamine with it, for a different reason and it was a good thing I did.

I woke up two hours after taking it, I was in a cold sweat and could not move any part of my body for 5 hours. I could not even yell for help and my son who was 18 then was sleeping in the next room. I now know what it has to be like for a quadrapelegic. The only thing on me that was working was my mind and eyes. If I hadn't taken the antihistamine I would have most likely died. I remained in a cold sweat for two days from that stuff.

I have not usual reactions to things like most people do. I have considerable drug allergies also.

  10. I have had a lot worse things than this in my life and maybe, I have had them to set me up to handle this. They could have all be prep for this disease. At least that is how I think of it because actually for me personally managing this so far has been relatively easy. Who knows, maybe tomorrow I will fall apart at the seams. But this is nothing compared to some of my past problems, which I still have.

Depression is all part of this and I would not sit here and declare I don't or am not depressed because I am a bipolar with SAD but I am still better off than most.
