  1. I am sorry for everyone who has to go through episodes like this with inconsiderate people.I know we all do go through these. The point it was not a vote just because that is what you wanted to eat but what you could eat. It was terribly rude of them not to all sit down with you and say well how about this place, can you eat there?

Right now the same thing is happening with my gd in school. They won't let her eat peanut butter sandwiches at lunch because of a child with peanut allergies. However, the fact that my grand daughter has serious mustard and cinnamon allergies, they will not restrict the others from having things with mustard or cinnamon around her. If I lived there then I would talk to the school.

  2. I knew a woman ten years ago that had Celiac, she was rake thin but still cooked with wheat flour and ate things made with wheat. She lost all her teeth and would lose weight if she ate wheat but she never said it endangered her health. I think she really didn't know how dangerous it was because doctors are no better versed in Celiac now than ten years ago.

I thought there was no way I had it because In the last 5 years all the weight I gained. But then I lost lots of teeth too. It was my sister who impressed upon me that two of her friends have it and one I knew was a pretty big guy and I should have tests done.

  3. Not exactly a co-worker, family member or friend here...

I'm reading this mystery novel right now and one of the characters has Celiac disease! Apparently the author did some really good research because there's a lot of detail about this woman that rings true: she can't eat wheat, she's too thin, her family doesn't believe she really has a disease, they think she's just losing weight to get attention because she's jealous of her brother etc. So just as I'm developing all this newfound respect for this author and the fact that she's highlighting Celiac, this character proceeds to serve her family a meal of "beef stew, salad and french BREAD." I mean I suppose she could have made gluten-free versions of these foods unbeknownst to the reader, but the first person narrator -- a non-celiac detective -- mentions that the whole meal tasted really good so you know that the bread wasn't gluten-free! :D

Oh and the celiac turns out to be the killer in the end.

I'm not going to mention the name of the novel because I just blew the ending, but if anyone's curious about reading this book, email me and I'll privately send you the title and author.

I bet the Celiac was the murderer because she couldn't eat pizza or bread.

When we found out I had it the first thing my mother said was," a little bit won't hurt." I then said to her, "if you don't have Cummadan (sp?) for a week it won't hurt." She quickly said that was not true and I said to her to look at my disease like her not taking her drugs. That solved the problem and she never said it again.

  4. In beef there are numerous dye's and growth hormones. I was allergic to those well over 20 years ago and quit eating beef. One because of that and two because of the fact I didn't care for it either. I used to get even more sick from the beef. The other thing is cattle eat wheat and not knowing what the base in the dye's or the quick grow hormones are I would be inclined to leave the beef alone and see if that helps.

I only eat seafood or range free, no antibiotics or hormones, corn fed poultry also. I have noticed feeling better when I switched from store chicken to the range free.

Now for hand creams and shampoos not all of the list if they have wheat in these items and they are not required yet to list all ingredients. I have had to phone and email numerous companies to find out the ingredients.

  5. Hiya Silver,

I have been to Idaho plenty of times in the past, BC (Before Celiac). I have been through most of the midwest and Northern States, NY being the exception. Okay I know Trader Joes is on the West Coast in the US but not in the Wild West (lol). I guess Swiss Chalet is a Canadian thing.

I know the rural 338 people thing. I used to live in a small hamlet in about an 2 hours from Calgary that had that many people. Nothing worse than livig in beef and wheat country and say you don't eat beef and can't eat wheat. Rather like blashphemy here. Who knows maybe come summer I may decide to drive to Idaho for fun. Although I am off to Jamaica in March and hopefully Seattle in April.

It is easy to download a picture onto the site. I guess as long as you aren't naki <eg> they will put it up.

This is a great forum Silver, I have learned a lot here and a lot of support here.

  6. I rarely was able to sleep and spent much of the time running to the bathroom before being gluten-free. My body would itch all night long. Now, I do not itch all night, I may itch a bit. I do not get up almost every half hour to go to the bathroom, actually maybe a few times a night and most of the time not at all. I also sleep better than I ever have before.

CMCM-- Cute horse, reminds me of one of my horses of so long ago.

  7. I started going to this one when he saved me from another doctor who would have let me die from pernicious anemia. Now this one after seven years has really gone down hill. It was revealed to me yesterday that my family doctor has been reported to the the board of physicians and surgeons many times by other doctors because of things he hasn't done. I have been looking for a new doctor for awhile now because I imagined he was putting in time till his kids were out of university.

No wonder he has no hospital priviledges or I could never see a decent specialist. I am on the lists for other doctors when they start taking patients again.

I guess I need to move to BC, although my sister has had some dilly bar doctors too. But her friend out there kept putting his back out and his doctor said it wasn't his back and tested him for Celiac and it came back positive.

  8. As one of my many varied occupations in my life, one was I was also a chef, but no longer. However, today I thought if I had the funding I would start a gluten-free restaurant. I have a friend who is also a chef that has to be gluten-free and it would be the first of it's kind in the city.

You can change it where you are too. You can become famous for being a gluten-free chef. You would have a killer following and you would not be glutening yourself if you were able to have a place like that.

It would be great to find a backer or backers who need to be gluten-free or have allergies. A restaurant who is gluten-free and adapts to different allergies would have quite a following.

Here we have a vegan restuarant that is straight gluten. Great for vegans but not Celiac or gluten intolerant ones.

  9. As of this year in Canada, Celiacs, with the signing of a special form can now deduct their food from income tax. Since being diagnosed at the end of November, my family doctor who has been nothing but reluctant and muley will not sign the form for me. I am searching for another doctor and don't

want to go through tests all over again and gluten to get it done. As it is hard to find a doctor that is accepting new patients around here I am pissed off. However, another of my doctors who knows what I have been through with this said he would be happy to sign the form for me. He also told me

that this is not the first time he has heard of my family doctor "cutting corners." The strange thing about my family doctor is that he never touches anyone, meaning no physical examination, no feeling of glands when you have a sore throat or anything like that. That is not just with me but many people who have or had him.

If it wasn't for this doctor who is a specialist in another area I would never have gotten my Synthroid which has helped disolve the nodules, but now help me with this form. I am glad that I have at least one good doctor.

Has anyone else had problems like this with their doctor in these things.

  10. Hi Silver,

Not sure which "West" you are in but I am assuming the "West" in the US. I am not sure you have these in the US but Swiss Chalet has things that are gluten-free. So far, in the four places I have eaten in since being dx'd I have not been glutened. I have been glutened at work from touching the desk and someone eating a sandwhich at it.

If you are in the US and on the West coast it is not a restaurant but I know they have a trader Joes in San Fran that sells gluten-free foods. Wish we had some up in Western Canada.

  11. acheira,

I would say the instances are high with the ratios. It must be very high in Italy if they manditorily check every child before 6 years now. I am Scandinavian/Italian so, another high ration. It would be good if every country that has susceptibility to Celiac in its people should.

Sometimes in North America we are so far behind in medical things that, we think we are first.

  12. Lis,

As you are in an abusive situation the other thing you must look at is this. If you allow one abusive situation in your life of any type, that is all you will ever have. The sooner you break the pattern the better off you will be. I had an domineering moher, when I put an end to her abuse and stuck to my guns by not putting up with her garbage she somewhat changed. She knows if she tries anything with me I will hang up the phone etc. She still tries it with others who let her get away with it but no longer with me. Now is the time while you are young to break that pattern and show them you mean business. They are treating you like a beast of burden. Say no to abuse and crap and step out on your own or you will be under their thumb or someone else's for the rest of your life.

  13. There are things I miss like noodles, dumplings and pizza, but I have learned to make my own pizza and figured out ways to do the others gluten-free. When I think of having something I shouldn't, I think of how awful I felt on gluten, how bad my skin was, how I couldn't lose weight and only gained. I think about how bad do I want stomach cancer, colon cancer or death. You know after I think about that which takes ten seconds, I no longer even want gluten.

  14. Lis,

Your family acts worse than 7 year olds. Now, you are 21 an adult, you look for your own apartment. Maybe get a few buds from University to move in with you. They are treating you like a child, while they act like children and you let them. For your health and sanity move out, get your own place and run an add at the University for Celiac or gluten intolerant roomate "wanted".

Then when your family wants to see you, make it absolutely crystal clear that if they do one thing to harm you health wise you will walk out the door.

Also tell them that if they continue this bad and childish behavior you don't know when you will spead to them again. Then stick to your guns.

  15. Bambam,

I use the avon lipsticks with no ill effects. But I was going through some terrible things with the eye shadows. I wrote to Avon who told me this. "We have no idea what ingredients are in our cosmetics as we have them made by another company. " When asked if they could get the list of ingredients for foundation and eyeshadows, creams for me they replied with "it is not worth our while to request these at this time."

I used to buy a lot of avon now I will not buy any of their stuff.

  16. I only drink rum, vodka, or tequila only in sea level places because then I don't get bothered by them. As I don't get to sea level places much, I sure don't drink much, nor would I if I lived in a sea level place. I still have a bottle of Cuban rum from Cuba 2 years ago. Even though it is potent stuff, it does not bother me in Cuba. Wines are bad for me especially reds, I don't drink them at all.
