  1. Whether it is worth it is probably a personal decision, but I do feel it was worth it for me. I had been on a low carb diet for a few years, so any damage would have probably been hit or miss in an endoscopy. I'm not sure if a blood test would have worked because while I was basically eating low-carb I did eat some (not a lot though) low carb products which contained wheat, rye and barley.

    Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe the standard blood tests and endoscopy will tell you if you have an intolerance or sensitivity which can be just as problematic as full-on Celiac and the treatment for it is the same--gluten-free.

    The Enterolab results definitely showed me I have a sensitivity to gluten. I also had the genetic testing and testing for Casein, yeast and egg intolerance. Turns out I also have sensitity to Casein but not egg or yeast, which was VERY helpful for me and the genetic testing told me that I carry one of the main genes which is associated with Celiac disease.

    [ETA] I also think that having this information has helped to cement in my head that I absolutely DO have to adhere to the gluten-free lifestyle. You can always try the gluten-free diet for a few months to see if your symptoms clear up.

  2. Thank you! Yes, I have a new toaster oven. I don't use makeup everyday, just on weekends and then use Bare Minerals, except for mascara which is Maybelline and a lip liner which is Mary Kay...hum, maybe I need a new lip liner. I've been using Gluten-Free Sav. soap and alternate their shampoo/conditioner with a huge bottle of Bumble & Bumble that I'm trying to use up. The Bumble & Bumble ingredients look okay, but of I don't know about cross-contamination. I've checked the ingredients on most of the products I use as toiletries, and most look okay. I take Zyrtek, and haven't checked that yet, and I did just start taking it again a week ago. All my vitamins are gluten-free/casein-free and in fact don't contain any of the top 8 allergins now that I think about it. I also don't have the box anymore for the Bonine I took, but I've had the symptoms before yesterday.

    I'm thinking it may very well have been the Carl's Jr. Arg...we just have to be such detectives.

  3. I was hoping I would skip this part, lol. I've been seeing so many small improvements since going gluten/casein free, but for the past few days I have been very off-balance and feeling nauseated. I'm also having some problems with low blood pressure which produces a different kind of feeling--more like the blood is draining from my head type of thing.

    I saw my regular GP yesterday, who basically just took my pulse and said the off-balance/nausea was probably related to inner ear/sinus problems. She prescribed something similar to dramamine for that and said I could take dramamine or the prescription. I had some Bonine (similar to dramamine) at home so took one of those yesterday afternoon, but ugh, still feeling nausea. I have an appointment with an ENT next week. (For the record, I don't get motion sickness usually or easily...can take the wildest of ocean cruises, air planes, car rides etc. with no ill affect--hard to believing sitting at my desk would produce motion sickness, but I'm no doctor, lol.)

    She also said to monitor my blood pressure and to not move suddenly, get up quickly, and avoid standing or sitting for too long. Um, I'm going to Disneyland in about two weeks...it may involve some standing and sitting, lol. She didn't really say anything about it...course, she didn't have my chart in front of her either which would have shown YEARS of my "normal" BP readings...

    I don't think this is related to being glutened although I have eaten out at Carl's Jr. (fries and a low carb burger) ...but then I do that every Saturday and have for months and haven't felt this way--I've even asked the manager if they have dedicated fryers at that location, which he said yes (course I guess I should be wary of the "deer in the headlight" look he gave me as I was asking). I don't feel like I'm coming down with anything either.

    It's frustrating!

    I guess I'm going to have to go back to bare basics for a while until my system calms down.

  4. I just wanted to send you cyber {{{{{HUGS}}}}}. I've been spending a lot as well, and it definitely can get overwhelming. I do believe it gets better. I've been spending a lot on some of the foods I CAN have that I normally wouldn't eat, but have just felt like I needed to treat myself. Hopefully my "need" for those will decrease soon, lol.

  5. are there any gluten free and dairy free chocolate bars out there? I looked at DOVE dark chocolate, but they still add dairy. I'm craving it, I haven't had it since the gluten challenge, but I don't want to feel like crap if I have some!

    Tropical Source makes one. I found them at my local Whole Foods market. They have some very yummy flavors. My current favorite is rice crisp, but they have an almond, a hazelnut and a raspberry in my store.

  6. :o i WAS AT WORK AND ONE OF THE DRUG REPS BROUGHT IN OLIVER GARDEN ( ITALIAN FOOD) I KNEW IT WAS THERE IWENTOVER TO GET SOMETHING TO DRINK AND THEN I STARTED SMELLING AND SEEING ALL OF THE FOOD AND WHEN I LEFT THE ROOM I CRYED. I KNOW ITS A STUPID THINK TO CRY OVER BUT WELL I COULDNT HELP IT.

    Not stupid at all!

  7. I've had a skin scratch test for both environmental and food allergies...my environmental test showed MANY things, and I went on weekly allergy shots to fix that.

    The food test only showed 4 mild reactions: canteloupe, white grapes, yellow squash and barley. The skin scratch test won't tell you whether or not you are intolerant, just whether you are allergic.

    My newest allergist says that the testing is fairly accurate for what you are NOT allergic too, but that the "positives" are not necessarily true. So while I am not allergic to gluten (wheat, oats or rye, and only slightly to barley), I am intolerant to it.

    The skin scratch test will not tell you if you are Celiac or gluten sensitive, just whether or not you are allergic...it's not the same thing. You can still be Celiac but not be allergic to it...hope that makes sense.

    ETA: I didn't show any reaction to milk either, but likewise, I am definitely intolerant. I have the antibodies in my system against both gluten and casein.

  9. I didn't actually vote using the buttons, because I don't seem to fit the categories, lol.

    I was actually "diagnosed" by Enterlab as Gluten Intolerant and Casein Intolerant. I have seen positive response to the diet and have one of the main genes predisposing one to Celiac (along with any number of stressful events in recent years to act as a trigger), so I have put the pieces together myself.

    Since this user's other post was just a normal, run-of-the-mill, new person question, with normal responses and follow-ups by the original poster, it makes me wonder if this message was posted not by a disgruntled user, but by a user's arrogant child, or roommate, or spouse, or whatever. The tone of the first message just doesn't match the tone of this message.

    Sorry to continue the off-topic thing but I just had to agree with what Kimberly said. Her description is right on. They are wonderful, wonderful dogs, very intelligent, but definitely have a mind of their own, lol. I've owned two and both flunked two obedience courses (okay, I flunked, lol). I will someday get another for sure!
