ARCHIVED Is My Doctor Wrong?
RiceGuy replied to shanbr's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
From what I've read on this board, many Celiacs experience the swollen feet and ankles you describe. It sounds to me like water retention, which I have found to be lessened with reducing salt intake, but most notably when I started taking a magnesium supplement. I must say I've never read anything about the liver function being any indicator of Celiac... -
ARCHIVED Help... Fibro... Ra... Better With Gluten Free?
RiceGuy replied to shanbr's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Well, I stopped trusting doctors years ago, so I'm not going to give you a particularly "balanced" opinion. To me it sounds like your doctor is an idiot. The symptoms vary so widely from person to person that it just can't be as simple as the way he/she describes. I say just look at the posts on this board and see for yourself, and I'm sure the responses... -
ARCHIVED Help! What Did I Do Wrong?
RiceGuy replied to wowzer's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Can you post the recipe, or a link to it please? Maybe others can provide additional suggestions once they see the recipe. -
ARCHIVED Shampoo, Lotions, Dryer Sheets?
RiceGuy replied to kali-mist's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I know I get really sick from laundry detergents and dryer sheets. Of course before knowing about gluten I just thought it was a coincidence, or maybe a "regular" allergy. So now I just use shampoo for laundry soap, and no dryer sheets. I can deal with static electricity a whole lot easier than gluten. -
Heh, upon reading this, the words "gluten police" popped into my head. Then a scene like something out of a Monty Python sketch formed: Guy pulls up to a drive-thru, and attempts to order a burger. Suddenly an alarm goes off. Two officers jump into view, drag the guy out of his car and proceed to club him repeatedly with corn cobs. OK, so that would be...

ARCHIVED Peanut Butter!
RiceGuy replied to simplicity66's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Smucker's makes an all natural peanut butter - just peanuts and salt, and they also have an unsalted one if I recall correctly. Some supermarket chains have their own brand, which is what I get since it's way cheaper. BTW, that national chain who's name begins with "W" has one, but the quality is very poor, as are many things with their label. I give it... -
Well, some good things I see in this: 1) You did have the sense to use a gluten-free bun (though we know that's not good enough) 2) You felt ashamed of your lack of willpower 3) It didn't taste as good, which helps build willpower 4) You freely posted what happened 5) You got a noticeable reaction from it 6) You now have a stronger resolve to stick...

ARCHIVED Nice Eyelashes!
RiceGuy replied to ThomasMom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I wouldn't think Celiac causes long eyelashes. Rather that the genetic disposition tends to appear along with that of Celiac, or at least it seems to according to this thread. -
ARCHIVED Nice Eyelashes!
RiceGuy replied to ThomasMom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I just looked over the nail moon thread, the link to which is a few posts above mine. I am in fact taking a sublingual methylcobalamin (B12). My nails had been getting somewhat thin too for awhile, but are now looking quite healthy - perhaps more than I've ever seen them. Growing faster again as well. -
ARCHIVED Nice Eyelashes!
RiceGuy replied to ThomasMom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yeah, long lashes here too And about the nail moons; yes - all fingers, and some toes too. -
When I discovered that corn gave me sinus problems, I tested with various kinds of corn to see why the reaction differed from one instance to another. Eventually I narrowed it down to certain hybrids - likely GMO corn specifically. While popcorn and organic corn meal cause no apparent problems, sweet corn, and especially the ones labeled "extra sweet" are...

ARCHIVED Running Out Of Food Options
RiceGuy replied to Abug's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
No, that's not crazy at all! I prefer to think of the typical meat-eating, wheat-eating, dairy-eating American as having a very unbalanced and limited diet. To me, most people have "tunnel-vision" with respect to diet. That is, they DO LIMIT themselves to a small set of food choices, and bad ones at that. I also do not eat meat, dairy, eggs, or seafood... -
ARCHIVED Chocolate Frosting Pre-made Or Recipe
RiceGuy replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Frosting is very easy to make, so you could do that if the pre-made stuff is questionable, or contains other things besides gluten which you can't ingest. Here's a link to some recipes you might find useful: https://www.celiac.com/st_main.html?p_catid=53 -
Well, though I don't have specific links at hand, the reading I've done on yeasts in general is that many if not all seem to have various toxic compounds (such as acids) as waste products. Mold, fungi, etc are similar in this regard. One example which most people can relate to is poisonous mushrooms, some of which contain hallucinogenic compounds. Perhaps...

ARCHIVED Going Nuts Looking For Gluten Free Nuts
RiceGuy replied to naturalwoman's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would like to think that a health foods store would carry bulk nuts, which should be gluten-free IMHO. It may also be safer yet to buy them in the shell. Not as convenient, but for occasional snacking and such, it might not be too much of a bother. The supermarket ones I've always seen have a disclaimer about being processed with other nuts, but not wheat... -
Personally, I'd NEVER touch that stuff. Why? MSG! Since many forms of yeast produce free glutamic acid (among other things), I'm sure I'm not the only one whom wouldn't benefit from it. For B12, I just take a sublingual methylcobalamin. The body does store up B12 if there is more available than it needs for daily maintenance. Studies show such stored...

ARCHIVED Looking For Low Fat gluten-free Butter Or Margarine
RiceGuy replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Personally, I've never liked the idea of a low fat margarine. I mean, what's the point of margarine if not to actually put fat on/in the food? All fats have the same number of calories per tbsp. The only way margarine can be less than that is if it has fillers and/or water whipped into it. That's why the lighter stuff is typically in a tub, because it's actually... -
ARCHIVED Whole Grain Bread?
RiceGuy replied to russtay1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There are many ways to enjoy high fiber foods besides breads. You might consider Kasha (roasted buckwheat). It's not related to wheat, and is gluten-free of course. I use it like a hot cereal, or as a grain. Legumes (beans/lentils) are high in fiber as well. I think I saw a a recipe for millet bread on this site, but you can just look up the bread recipes... -
ARCHIVED Fasting
RiceGuy replied to super-sally888's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Personally, I doubt fasting is a good idea for most if not all Celiacs. It seems to me that the malabsorption issue would mean the body already cannot derive a full set of nutrients, so denying the body of much needed nutrients would only make the resulting conditions more pronounced. I mean, it's the lack of nutrients which causes many of the problems we... -
ARCHIVED Msg?
RiceGuy replied to pugluver31902's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I noticed this some years ago myself. I had to find a store with a rack of "seconds" (stuff that came off the production line incorrectly) to find a few things that fit. They often turned out to be children's clothes. Though initially it was embarrassing to have to buy children's clothes for myself, especially when I would pick something off the rack and... -
ARCHIVED Msg?
RiceGuy replied to pugluver31902's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I guess my point still has not gotten across as I intended. The example of the peas was to emphasize that even though the consumer knows the package contains peas, they are listed anyway. When something which is not listed is included, it begs the question WHY. I don't care if the MSG was already in one of the ingredients. The fact remains, that MSG is not... -
ARCHIVED Whole Grain Bread?
RiceGuy replied to russtay1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, brown rice is often used for gluten-free whole grain breads. Lots of fiber in that too. For the "nutty" texture/taste, I've read millet flour does that to a bread recipe, though I don't know if there are any commercially available breads with a notable amount of millet. Usually flax is used to boost the fiber content to such high levels. However... -
ARCHIVED Yogurt
RiceGuy replied to infiore's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You can always add your own flavors to the plain stuff. Lemon, vanilla, berries, applesauce, etc. Sweeten with Stevia for an even healthier yogurt. If I recall correctly, the plain yogurts are cheaper too. Or, you could skip the yogurt and get a probiotic supplement. Might work faster and be cheaper still. I once found it necessary to re-balance... -
ARCHIVED Yogurt
RiceGuy replied to infiore's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
From your first post, I guess you are looking for something with live active cultures such as acidophilus, to help replace the healthy flora of the digestive tract, yes? If so, then you may want to look on the container for a statement to that effect. -
ARCHIVED Msg?
RiceGuy replied to pugluver31902's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Have you tried Stevia? It's a natural sweetener derived from an herb. Actually sweeter than sugar, no carbs, no calories, no side effects, etc. No glycemic load either. Interesting how it was submitted to the FDA for approval about the same time as aspartame, and was rejected! So the public gets the artificial one with side effects It's used in a number...
