Well, I did like those samoas (however that's spelled), but I've never really had much of a sweet tooth. Still, I'm planning on attempting to duplicate the recipe one of these days. What I'd really like now and then however, is a box of gluten-free Triscuits.

ARCHIVED Perpetual Cold Illness
RiceGuy replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Whenever there are people around me who have contagious illnesses, I make sure to get extra garlic in my diet. I typically have some on a regular basis anyway, since it is healthy, delicious, and a very good way to boost the immune system. Onion is also good. One thing that I know gives me cold-like symptoms is GMO corn, which from what I can tell has... -
ARCHIVED Good Herb For C ?
RiceGuy replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've tried a few different magnesium supplements - all in powdered form because I know my system would never break down a solid pill. My main goal was actually to assist in nutrient absorption, but I did see the kind of effect you're looking for also. The first one "worked", but it really gave me trouble at the same time. I then tried a different formulation... -
It took about six months before I saw any change. Then it really kicked in, and I knew I was on the right track. So I'd say it's still quite possible the diet will help, and as stated there are always other intolerances/allergies to consider. Hope you get the answers you need.

ARCHIVED Tuna Noodle Cassarole
RiceGuy replied to kathy1's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
To me, onion and celery are great to have in tuna noodle casserole, and green peas, carrots, broccoli, corn, etc are good too IMHO. It's really just personal preference though. -
Well, I haven't tried those, but I might try to approximate the recipe by using logical proportions of the ingredients they have on the package. Also taking note of the color, aroma, etc, while adding things, and attempt to match the original. What may help is to bake a small amount of the mix like a cookie, for a reference. Then as you tweak your own...

ARCHIVED Guts Trembling All Night After Canola Oil
RiceGuy replied to nama shivaya's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've never tried canola, but I know it is in some stuff I've eaten before. I can't be sure if I had any specific reaction though. Anyway, if you're looking for a good oil, have you tried coconut oil or macadamia nut oil? The coconut oil is by far my favorite, and it is very healthy. It's also stable at high temperatures, so it's great for all kinds of... -
Yeah, I was beginning to wonder how many are answering with the way things are after a certain amount of recovery, rather than at the hight of the issues they experienced. The idea here is not so much to tell how long it takes to get better, but the range of such symptoms when the gut is having difficulties. Though I must admit it is helpful for folks wanting...

ARCHIVED Best Place To Purchase Threelac
RiceGuy replied to KirstySF's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
When I found out I had the yeastie beasties, I used caprylic acid capsules. Quite cheap, and worked quickly for me. I only needed one or two bottles of the stuff. Just avoiding sugars and yeast kept things right from then on. I saw amazing results within about two weeks. -
ARCHIVED Peanut Butter.... Any One.... Skippy..
RiceGuy replied to zachsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Dry out? Perhaps you mean as you get closer to the bottom, there's less and less oil in it, yes? That would also be consistent with having oil on top so much. Basically, you aren't stirring it properly/enough. There's no big secret or trick involved. Just a bit of diligence is all it takes. When I get a new jar, the first thing I do is CAREFULLY begin... -
ARCHIVED In Chronic Pain
RiceGuy replied to acod's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't recall seeing any references to that in direct relation to Celiac, but perhaps others have. It certainly reminds me of a candida infection though. It might be a secondary symptom, as the digestive system may not be able to keep the yeasties in check. I'd look into this too, and AFAIK it can't hurt to take a caprylic acid supplement just in case (it... -
Though I don't put much faith in tests, with such a positive result it's hard to ignore. Especially when many report negative and borderline results, even when the gluten-free diet does wonders for them. If Celiac was not so seemingly likely, I'd say it might be a candida infection, or a reaction to MSG. There are numerous posts on these which you might...

ARCHIVED Vitamin Deficiency Neuropathy
RiceGuy replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I also have experienced quite a bit of numbness, along with muscle/joint pains, twitching, spasms, weakness, etc. What I've found most helpful are both a sublingual methylcobalamin supplement, and a magnesium supplement. The improvements are thus far astounding to me. I wish I had started them a long time ago. Since my digestive system would never handle... -
ARCHIVED Food Allergies
RiceGuy replied to TBLKWL's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm sorry that your child is having such allergies. Hopefully over time some of them will disappear, though I don't know if that can happen given the sort of testing which was done. I do know that sensitivities can come and go though. For breads, you might find millet bread to work, and there are others too, such as tapioca, buckwheat (it's not related... -
ARCHIVED In Chronic Pain
RiceGuy replied to acod's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome to the board! I'm so glad you have taken such important steps in getting gluten-free. For many of us we find out about our gluten intolerance only after many years of suffering. As for the pains and such, I along with many here will suggest two things: A Sublingual methylcobalamin (vitamin B12) supplement, and a magnesium supplement. For me... -
ARCHIVED Lump In Throat
RiceGuy replied to nama shivaya's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have only had a feeling of a lump in my throat a few times, and each time it was due to a particular food I don't normally eat. So for me it seems like an allergic reaction, or perhaps some compound in the food item which is in a higher concentration than in most other foods. Certain seeds appear to do this to me, but thus far I haven't liked the taste... -
Yeah, that's why I added a question for When. There really are a number of questions that should be included.

The purpose of this poll is to try to get an idea of the kinds of "bathroom issues" one might expect from Celiac disease. Being a poll, no one need be embarrassed about adding their experience here. Of course, any posts on the subject are welcome too. Hopefully this will help answer some questions from folks who are new to Celiac disease. Had more questions...

ARCHIVED Peanut Butter.... Any One.... Skippy..
RiceGuy replied to zachsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Haven't you ever simply added cocoa or carob powder to natural peanut butter? To me this tastes quite yummy. A dash of cinnamon adds a nice flavor too. Apple sauce is also a great addition (I recommend the natural unsweetened kind). -
ARCHIVED Peanut Butter.... Any One.... Skippy..
RiceGuy replied to zachsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Doesn't anyone eat natural peanut butter? It's just peanuts and salt! No sugars, no fillers, no hydrogenation, no gluten, nothing else at all. It's what I've always eaten since I was little. Nothing better IMHO. Smuckers makes one, as well as Arrowhead Mills and other companies, so it shouldn't be hard to find. Even supermarket chains like that big one... -
ARCHIVED Is There A Substitute For Tomatoes?
RiceGuy replied to a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
If you need to avoid nightshades, then the bell peppers are out too, and don't forget to look out for red pepper, paprika, and a few other things. Anyway, I just made a nightshade-free pasta sauce tonight. I pureed some spinach, then cooked it with onion, garlic, oregano, basil, a bit of salt. For a meat-like taste I added some tofu and poultry seasoning... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Vitamin B Deficiency
RiceGuy replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There are numerous nutritional deficiencies which can accompany Celiac. Because of the damage to the small intestine, any number of nutrients may not be properly absorbed. As many others on this board, I did eventually begin taking a B12 supplement, and also magnesium. Both of these along with others might help you, though you'd probably have to try some... -
I've been self-employed for quite a while, and the Internet has given me additional business opportunities. I don't mean those 'get-rich-quick' things either. Rather utilizing what might otherwise be a mere hobby to earn a living (or at least try to). I can't say it's easy to make happen, but to me it is far more rewarding than being stuck in some cubical...

ARCHIVED A Strange Symptom I've Not Experienced Before
RiceGuy replied to lisalouryan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I did have some pains like what you describe. What I experienced might have no relevancy to your case, but maybe it will help someone in some way. For me it started at my shoulder blades, but one at a time for a few weeks. My arms did ache and felt weak too. Then the pain was mostly right in the middle, and over a period of weeks it would migrate down... -
ARCHIVED For Those Who Are Dairy Free
RiceGuy replied to Lisa's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Another dairy-free margarine if Willow Run, made by Shedd's. I haven't tried it, and it has more trans fat than the Fleischmann's. Earth Balance has no trans fats or hydrogenated oils.
