  1. The others have given good advice. It's simply a bad idea. For some specifics, look here: Open Original Shared Link
  2. When I was looking up non-dairy cheeses, I saw some products with a yeast of sorts on the list of ingredients. We know what that means...So I emailed the company, and asked them point blank. Their response was something like two months later, and they basically said "well, yeah it's MSG, but it's not much"! Who defines "not much"? It doesn't take much to...
  3. There are some tests, though I don't have any specifics. Thing is, if he's simply sensitive to dairy because of the intestinal damage, it may not be a true allergy, and thus may not show on allergy tests. Anyway, there are non-dairy cheeses, milks, and so on. So there's no reason to feel deprived. I don't do dairy either, but I can still have many milk...
  4. From what I've read, guar gum gives a texture that is more suitable for cakes than xanthan gum. Though in most cases they can both be used interchangeably, the exact amount may vary. It depends on a few factors, such as the granularity of the guar gum. I'm sure xanthan also varies from brand to brand, but not ever having used it I haven't looked into it....
  5. Well, lucid dreaming is when you're (at least partially) conscious while asleep. It can allow you to direct and control your dreams, but much more if you get adept at it. I haven't experienced sleep paralysis to the extent that you do. Most times though, I'll become conscious maybe two or three seconds before being awake enough to move. The way I see it...
  6. Wow, so sorry that you're having such problems. The very first thing that comes to mind is a sublingual methylcobalamin (vitamin B12) supplement. Others might be vitamin D and magnesium. Ignore test results for these and go with how you feel after trying them. I'm sure other members will have helpful advice as well. Hope you get to the bottom of...
  7. I would think some of the following flours would work well for cookies, depending on the recipe of course: Amaranth Flour Buckwheat Flour Coconut Flour Millet Flour Quinoa Flour Sorghum Flour Teff Flour
  8. Having practiced lucid dreaming, I did run into the paralysis thing. But being able to reason, I keep in mind that it's not anything to worry about. Normal motor nerve functions are essentially turned off when sleeping. This is normal and healthy, so you aren't supposed to be able to move consciously. A likely reason is so we don't act out our dreams. So...
  9. Isn't ordinary sorghum flour what you're referring to? That's easy to obtain. Even Bob's Red Mill sells it.
  10. I buy red lentils - for the very reason that they cook into a puree. They DO have a noticeable aroma to them, as if spices have been added (even before cooking). I think they smell sort of peppery. But there is nothing added to them. At least not the ones I have been getting. However, there are at least three kinds of red lentils that I'm aware of. For...
  11. Precisely. Which is the reason for the product I selected. In addition, multiple smaller doses have been shown to be absorbed more efficiently than one large dose.
  12. Well, I had tried a product called Natural Calm, but found it wasn't so nice to my system. I was taking a double dose though, so it may be that I overdid it. Anyway, I didn't like the taste either, so I switched to a different product, and recently to yet another, just to see the difference. Thus far all seem to really work great. Especially if taken between...
  13. Try this Google search: Open Original Shared Link
  14. As was mentioned, probiotics seem like a good idea, or at least shouldn't hurt. Two other things which come to mind are a magnesium supplement, and foods containing resistant starches such as slightly green bananas. The magnesium assists in nutrient absorption, and the resistant starches have been found to aid in the repair of the intestinal wall.

    ARCHIVED Candida?

I once had the yeastie beasties (candida). I got rid of it by avoiding all yeasts and sugars, and taking caprylic acid capsules. Also avoided other things which promote yeast growth, like vinegar. I felt like I had a new body within weeks. Note: The term "yeasts" here is being used to refer to not just bread yeast and other forms such as extracts, but...
  16. I take one by Source Naturals - 1000 mcg, three per day.
  17. There's also the possibility that his digestive system simply isn't accustomed to one or more ingredients. The gut doesn't maintain digestive enzymes for compounds not normally encountered, so when something new enters the system, it can take some time for the required enzymes to be produced. I read this is why Americans tend to experience gas and/or heartburn...
  18. Here's the reply I just received from Bob's Red Mill:
  19. Here are two thread that I recall on this topic: Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link I'm sure you can get satisfactory results. Though I've just begun experimenting with gluten-free flours, my guess would be to start with sweet white rice flour.
  20. I'd guess it's either he doesn't usually eat as much fiber as the rice pasta meal contained, or it was just a coincidence. Just my two cents...
  21. I agree with the others. Stick to basic home-cooked meals from scratch. That's easy to make gluten-free and healthy. It's the pre-packaged stuff which is pricey. I can't afford those either.
  22. Many have found a magnesium supplement to be very helpful for the things you've mentioned. I'd recommend a powder or liquid form to ensure the most effective absorption. Many of the ones available on the market also contain calcium, which is another nutrient which is often deficient in Celiacs. I hope you feel better soon.
  23. Yeah, I find that to be true as well. My first impression was that it smelled like there was a baseball glove in the oven Anyway, since the smell is similar to that of a spoiled package of tofu I had recently, I'm not 100% convinced that fresh bean flour should smell this way. The health store doesn't refrigerate them, and although the package doesn...
  24. Hi everyone. I have both Soy Flour and Garbanzo & fava Flour from Bob's Red Mill. They smell really horrid. Kinda like fish - especially the second one. Both well within the freshness date. Is that to be expected? I can't imagine so, and have emailed the company to make sure. No response from them as yet though.
  25. Well, from what I've read you can't just put a whole new kind of food into your gut like that. Apparently, the digestive system doesn't keep producing enzymes which it doesn't use. So when adding a food you haven't had in awhile, I might suggest eating only a tiny bit at first. This will allow the gut to produce the necessary enzymes without overloading it...
