Looking for recipes involving hemp seeds. I bought them to add to hot rice cereal, but I'm thinking there are more possibilities. Any ideas would be great. Thanks.

ARCHIVED Can I Bake Gluten Free? Advice Needed
Mango04 replied to Weddingcakes's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I think this is your best solution. Just make sure people know there is a chance of cross contamination. Maybe getting some dedicated equipment would help too, if possible (especially if you happen to use anything plastic or porous). -
ARCHIVED High Fructose Corn Syrup - Gluten Free But . . . .
Mango04 replied to home-based-mom's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Wow that's insane. I recall reading in Pollan's book (and don't quote me here as I don't have the source handy) that #2 Iowa corn (the corn that HFCS comes from) isn't even edible in it's "natural" state. It's grown in mass quantities simply for the purpose of being turned into additives. Yuck. -
ARCHIVED Anyone In San Diego, Ca?
Mango04 replied to pinkscooby6's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm from San Diego and I'm not there anymore, but I wish I were! There are sooo many great gluten-free options there! Check out Jimbos, Whole Foods, Ranchos Organic Market, Trader Joe's, the farmers markets, Henry's, OB People's Co-op etc. etc. For restaurants check out www.glutenfreeinsd.com. There are some good threads on here with more specific... -
ARCHIVED High Fructose Corn Syrup - Gluten Free But . . . .
Mango04 replied to home-based-mom's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
The Omnivore's Dilemma is a fantastic and fascinating read about the corn industry (who knew something about corn could be so interesting, right? LOL). If anyone's interested in learning more about the background of all this, it would be a good place to start. -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Granola Recipe?
Mango04 replied to Q1821's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
This one looks pretty good: Open Original Shared Link There are also quite a few granola recipes that use gluten-free oats, if you can have those. -

ARCHIVED Day 2 Gluten Free - Overwhelmed At The Grocery Store
Mango04 replied to bdeanjon's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Do you have a George Foreman? I loved mine in college. You can easily cook meats (meats are safe) and grill veggies on it. Rice and beans are handy (and very cheap) as well. A rice cooker is another useful item (especially the ones that let you cook rice and steam veggies simultaneously). Have you tried shopping at Trader Joe's? Their prices... -
ARCHIVED Layman's Definition Of Celiac
Mango04 replied to Beth in NC's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The gluten protein causes the immune system to attack and destroy the intestines (or just "organs" would be fine). I don't explain it to my friends though. Most of them just know I have some sort of mysterious and severe adverse reaction to certain common foods. -

I agree with the idea of bringing all your own food. I've done it many times on weekend trips (it's not too hard if it's just a weekend). It might seem like a hassle but really beats getting sick.

ARCHIVED Rotel And Living Harvest Hemp Milk
Mango04 replied to fig girl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Living Harvest Hemp Milk is gluten free. -
That's your problem right there. Ya have to grocery shop. Just walk over to the meat section after work and buy some meat. Then walk over to the produce section and buy lots of vegetables. No label reading required. Cook it up when you get home and bring some for lunch the next day (just stick it in the fridge when you get there and eat it cold for...

Sorry....my earlier post was meant to say: there's no reason why you shouldn't bring plenty of food with you.

First, try to take the time to breathe and relax. It's a whole lot easier to live with celiac disease if you give yourself a little time each day to think about and prepare some food (it's actually a necessity, even if it seems like you don't have time for it). I'm on the go all day so fridges and microwaves aren't options for me either. To make...

Today I bought some organic red wine vinegar, fair trade black tea, and an amazing organic dark chocolate called Vivani. Hmmm...yesterday I bought my favorite spicy vanilla iced tea called Tee-Ja-Vu. Wow so this is where all my money's going. Good thing I worked overtime all summer. I think tomorrow I will buy some organic chicken (about $12 per...

ARCHIVED Dairy Free Frosting (no Palm Or Soybean Oil)
Mango04 replied to still.joyful's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Maybe you could make it yourself with coconut oil. -
I think grilled chicken vs. fried was an honest mistake that most (non-celiac) people wouldn't think twice about. Life (for me anyway) is a lot easier if I don't ever, ever expect others to provide me with food. Always just go to the events, assume nothing will be safe to eat, and enjoy the people around you. Eat beforehand and stick a couple energy bars...

ARCHIVED Job Interview Bringing In Lunch For Me
Mango04 replied to *lee-lee*'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wouldn't even use the word "gluten," as in my opinion, the specific protein you can't eat should be irrelevant to them. Something along the lines of "dietary restrictions" should work. -
ARCHIVED Is Backpacking Possible?
Mango04 replied to majicbunnies's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I've done it (gluten, dairy and soy-free). No problems. Don't expect to eat elaborate meals in restaurants, but backpakers don't do this anyway. -
