  4. since so many people don't know what celiac is, it is always interesting when you talk to someone who does know what it is...........just the other day i was in the grocery checkout and when i said that my girls had celiac disease, the checker was commenting about how we had to change our diet and such. i asked her how she knew about celiac and she said...

  6. your story brought tears to my eyes. welcome to the board. i'm pretty new here myself (3 kids diagnosed about 4-5 weeks ago. i'll bet you won't do this---but doesn't it make you want to go back to each and every doctor (especially the one that sent you to a psych) and show them what the cancer specialist has discovered?? christine
  7. i used to have a garden that was about 2500 sq feet---but i just couldn't keep up with it, so several years ago i reduced it a little over half----and still had a hard time keeping it weeded. i am interested in sq foot gardening, too. i have heard that you can grow alot more produce in a smaller space and have less weeds. i used to love gardening and canning...
  8. we have only been gluten free since jan 1 of this year. my daughter has had no symptoms other than a rash that is very itchy--not sure if it is DH or atopic dermatits. her twin sister has been sick for months, and my 10 yr old didn't have obvious symptoms. the other 2 girls seem to be eating ok. i worry a little that my daughter could become anorexic...
  9. i am really worried about making sure my kids get a fairly balanced diet, but i am especially worried about one of my girls in particular---she does not eat very much, and she is a very picky eater. she is already very, very thin and she wears her robe or her coat most of the time because she is cold. if you touch her, she feels like skin and bones. her...

  11. jen---i'd like to hear about your companion gardening---would love to be able to keep the bugs away without chemicals. i used to tell my kids i would pay them a penney for every potato bug they picked off the plants----i can't remember if they ever got payed. we have open fields on two sides of our property, so we get alot of bugs. the people that are more...

  13. i know that H. Pylori causes ulcers and if you take the right antibiotic, it clears up the ulcer. i thought that C.diff was caused when someone had been on a lot of antibiotics---but it requires a different type of antibiotic to clear it up. some thing about aerobic and anaerobic types of antibiotics-----sorry i'm not much more help than this. christine
  14. is willick your last name? my maiden name was willich----kind of an unusual name, so i was surprised to see your varition on the board. we have made some fairly good bread from bette hagman's featherlight mix. the only gluten free cereals we can get at the grocery store are post fruity pebbles and post cocoa pebbles and puffed rice----i hate sending my...
  15. i thought i posted a reply on this thread, but i don't know what happened to it??? my girls don't particularly like roll-ups done with corn tortillas. i am thinking of making swedish lefse for them to make sanwiches with instead. lefse looks like a flour tortilla, but is made with mostly potatoes and a little flour---it should be easy enough to substitute...
  16. has anyone been able to get their insurance to cover tests that have been run by prometheus lab? since my son's original test came back IgA deficient, he has to have a different test run, and th ped gi's office tells me that this is the only lab to do it. we have had a lot of trouble with this insurance company. i can just imagine that every time i call...
  17. hi all, are any of your celiac kids eating school lunch? my girls have been making their own lunches to bring to school. it would be so much easier to give them a better variety if they had access to a refridgerator and a microwave at the school. i know that by law, if i wanted to make a stink, (but i don't want to) they would have to provide gluten free...
  18. just wondering if anyone has tried this flour blend, and if it worked well for them? christine
  19. i'm so glad to see you started this thread----sometimes it is good to just be able to vent everything that is wrong!!! i hope it's ok for me to vent a little on here too. we have been on such a long and bumpy odyssey for the last 3 years. i had orthoscopic knee surgery, followed by a "bonus" pregnancy at 40. can you believe some people get pregnant at 4...
  20. this is what the info the doc's office gave me said---it is from gluten-free living 2002--- according to the FDA code of federal regulations(CFR), caramel color can be made from wheat. but US companies use corn because it makes a better product. wheat could be used to make caramel color outside the US, but it is reasonable to assume corn is more likely...
  21. the info that we got from our ped gi stated that caramel coloring is most likely not to be made from anything containing gluten----so i have not been worrying when i see it on a label. has anyone had a problem with caramel coloring? christine

  24. i think it should save quite a bit grinding your own flour. i just bought 5 lbs of white rice flour for 3.75. i can buy 25 lbs of rice for under 10 dollars. really like sorghum flour and can buy 25 lbs of sorghum to grind for just under 17 dollars. i've got to get my mill ordered!! i plan on keeping my old flour mill, i'll just make sure i don't ever...
  25. i was talking to my mom today about celiac and once again realized how grateful i am to be able to come on here and get info and help and support from all of you. i have a friend who has been diagnosed with celiac for 8 years---her daughter is a friend of my twins. because of her, i already knew a fair amount about celiac and her daughter helped explain...
