  1. do you use the gluten free flour or sweet rice flour the same as you would use wheat flour----2 TBS butter to 2 TBS flour in one cup of liquid? i have used corn starch for years, even before we went gluten free, but there can be a little bit of a difference in the texture (especially when reheating leftovers). plus, my kids could use the extra calories...
  2. cindy----we had one child with a positive blood test, so we tested most of the rest of the family and discovered that 2 more of our children have celiac also. another child is having more testing done because he is IgA deficient. we have 4 older children that still need to be tested. glad you're getting tested. christine
  3. it depends on your doctor and the circumstances. 2 of my children had biopsies, the 3rd did not. christine
  4. our ped gi said that inflamation is something you would see with celiac. christine
  5. i laughed out loud on this one!!!! christine
  6. can anyone tell me if jello brand pudding mix is gluten free? molly is invited to a party on friday. the mom called me yesterday and said they will be having pudding with fruit in graham shells. i told her not to put molly's in a shell. she will probably be using jello brand pudding mix and i can't find any info on it. christine
  7. kayjay---sylvia was failure to thrive, so they did a ph probe and an endoscopy with biopsies. i really had no idea how bad her reflux was until i got the test results. she was refluxing almost 25% of the time and had several prolonged episodes of reflux----one lasted 44 minutes while she was asleep. i could watch the monitor and see when she was refluxing...
  8. my daughter was diagnosed with a fungal infection in her esophagus when she had an EDG----but this was before we suspected she had celiac. you could see little white patches all over in the picture he brought me. christine
  9. i haven't commented on any of this stuff about McD's------we never eat there, but we might some day. i would hate to see a lawsuit happen-----is there anyway that we can publicly show support for all the restaurants that are trying to help those with celiac and allergies be able to "eat out"? maybe if it could be known that many celiacs don't agree with...
  10. kayjay-----for some reason reflux gets worse frome 4-6 months. i don't exactly know why, but i have heard it said alot on the infant reflux board. IMHO, zantac is worthless. it did nothing for my baby. most babies with reflux do better on a PPI---prevacid seems to be what works the best. my baby ended up with an ulcerated esophagus at 8 months old--...
  11. three of my kids are diagnosed with celiac, 3 have tested negative, 4 have not been tested yet, and one came back IgA deficient---so he needs more testing. we have a combined family---yours, mine and ours. we don't know which (or both?) sides the celiac is coming through, so we need to get them all tested. my son that doesn't want to know has had more...
  12. i talked to the ped gi---since she can't afford to lose any weight and she is the only one sick in the family, he called an order to the lab for a stool test. i think that maybe she is improving a little---at least she hasn't gone potty as many times today, so i may hold off on the lab test until tomorrow and see how she is doing. i bought her some boost...
  13. usually you get relief from lying on your left side because of the way the esophagus attaches to the stomach-----i wonder why it is worse for you on that side. christine
  14. sherry, i had several meltdowns when 3 of my girls were diagnosed with celiac. we have only been gluten free since jan 1, but it has gotten so much easier already. it seems like there are alot of people on here that have only recently been diagnosed---maybe it's because us newbies just ask alot of questions. you're in good hands here. christine
  15. i've had problems with acid reflux for over 14 years----and i rarely ever taste acid in my mouth----unless something happens to make it almost all the way up to my mouth, but then it kind of tastes like vomit. i would get horrible pain in my chest, clear through to my back, sometimes all the way up through my neck and it would make my teeth hurt. one night...
  16. sounds like it could be acid reflux. christine
  17. someone was reading my mind!! i was just recently thinking about freezing gluten free food. reading through this thread, i have so many questions---i hope i can remember them all. katydid--- why will sweet rice flour work better for thickening and freezing than regular rice flour? do you use sweet rice flour for thickening the same way you would use wheat...
  18. my daughter that is already so much under weight has gotten a stomach bug. she has been nauseated and having diarreah (SP?) i weighed her today and she has lost a little over 3 lbs. she already eats so little. i have got to get her diarreah stopped. can i give her immodium? she is already so frail looking and i am a little worried that she will dehydrate...
  19. my oldest son does not want to be tested for celiac. he says he would be devastated if he had it. he will be 23 in april and is living at home with us and has a dead end job that does not even give him full time hours. he lives in depression more often than not. he has the runs about 1/2 the time. he went over a year being nauseated and throwing up and...
  20. my children had raised tissue transglutaminase levels. tTg is pretty specific for celiac disease. according to the test my children had done, .7 is normal. one of my kids had a level of 18.?? and another had a level of 22.?? i don't know the other one's level. get a copy of your blood test so you can tell what test was actually done by your doctor. ...
  21. i have 3 kids with celiac. two did not show damage with their biopsies, and the 3rd did not even have a biopsy. christine
  22. i'm irritated for you, too!!!!! there was a time when hypoglycemia was the rage, most recently, candida is the rage. both of those things, for the most part, can't be "proved" medically. (although some people do have a genuin problem with these things) when each of these things was in vogue, just about any symptom people couldn't get a diagnosis on was...
  23. one of my daughters seems to have no appetite and we are concerned as she is really underweight. christine
  24. lori, my girls did not have any damage show when they had biopsies---the ped gi did not even do a biopsy on the youngest one. even though the biopsies did not show any damage, he said that they probably do have damage. celiac can be very patchy and an endoscope can only get about 6 feet into the small intestine. i think that having blood tests done on...
