  1. "There are many 'self-diagnosed' celiacs on this board who think their negative blood tests are because of low gluten consumption. Doctors will not diagnose a person as a celiac unless they have a positive biopsy." our ped gi diagnosed celiac even though my daughters' biopsies did not show damage and one of them didn't have a biopsy. they all had raised...
  2. if she has DH---she has celiac. christine
  3. you can't outgrow celiac disease. you can outgrow a wheat allergy. i don't know if you can outgrow non-celiac gluten intolerance, though. my guess is that you probably cannot. christine
  4. jen, my e-mil is kevheiner@msn.com do you know anything about the oats from wyoming. i was thinking about sending the link for them to our ped gi and having him look it over and tell me what he thinks. he seems to be really informed and up to date on his info. i never would have thought that i would desperately want to be able to feed my children oats...
  5. i would like to order some of the oats from the place in wyoming, but they are really pricey. i used to make a really simple homemade granola that my family loved. my daughter that needs to gain weight liked my granola. it is easy to make granola full of calories, i'm sure you can see where i'm going with this......anyway, wouldn't we be able to tell when...
  6. i really would like to be able to use oats---if i can get them pure. our ped gi said oats are ok, if pure. i know alot of people are worried about reacting to them anyway. is there anyone out there that has been able to eat them occasionally without problems? i found some that are grown especially for celiacs, but i am still afraid to use them, at least...
  7. i'm really having a hard time making a decision on this issue with the varied answers everyone has given. my kids don't have obvious symptoms to gluten, or we just haven't been gluten free long enough to know what gluten symptoms they would get.........also, how do we know if the symptom is actually from gluten, or if it is from some other component of the...
  8. nini---that is what i payed for it too, it was on sale, and i bought all that was left on the shelf. i used it in one of my crock pot meals---i think i probably should have used 2 cans to make up for the fact that it isn't condensed, (the potatoes were a little dry) but it held up well in the crockpot. christine
  9. i like this idea-----for both reasons!!!my girls can tell if they are "eating" their shampoo, and i'm sure they would love something to soften their hair and get out the build-up. christine
  10. the recipe lori is talking about is in the "gluten free gourmet bakes bread". someone on here said they made some by copying ingredients that were in some purchased ones----i think they said they used some almond meal in them. maybe they will see this thread and post what they did. i wish i could remember who it was!! christine
  11. hey nini---can i get those files and info from you too? it has gotten alot easier already, but i sure could use some more ideas! jackie, my twins that are just recently diagnosed are 14 years old also------maybe your daughter would like to chat on line with them or e-mail them? christine
  12. amanda, i thought i'd tell you about my 3 kids with celiac---just so you can see how different every case can be. i have 14 year old twins and a 10 yr old with celiac. one twin had a negative biopsy, but they weren't looking for celiac. she was nauseated for 3 months with periodic diarrhea, a blood test was positive. the other twin was the first tested because...
  13. we drove to a city about 49 miles away and went to fred meyer's. i found some cream of mushroom soup and some cream of chicken soup and some tomatoe soup---all gluten-free of course. i was so excited! the brand of the cream soups was Health Valley. i have not been able to find progresso anywhere, except to order a case from the internet. the tomato soup...
  14. i think i read that an adult celiac, after they have been on the gluten free diet for (either 2 or 5 years) anyway.....their risk of other diseases is supposed to return to normal. i think for a child, their risks return to normal alot sooner. christine
  15. hi---one of our girls tested positive on a blood test and her biopsy was iffy. her twin had had a biopsy a few months before (for reflux), but her biopsy was negative for celiac (although they weren't looking for it either) i had most of my children, and my husband and myself, tested with a blood test. the twin with a negative biopsy tested positive and...
  16. SSRI's do not lower the amount of seratonin a person has. they prevent the reuptake of it, thus making more of the seratonin available. christine
  17. i think our ped gi would do a G-tube in her side if it comes to that, but hopefully she will put on some weight here and get feeling better and get her appetite back. (i hope it is not an eating disorder) christine
  18. we are still having trouble getting our insurance to pay for my son's testing. the gal at the gi's office talked to them and they want the doctor's notes-----my son hasn't been in, we tested because it is genetic, so there are no notes to send them. the INSURANCE said for us to put him on a gluten free diet. this kid has no symptoms except an IgA deficiency...
  19. i've bought a lot of my jars at yard sales. christine
  20. i talked to the ped gi today. if we can't get tianna to eat enough to gain some wait, she may end up with a feeding tube. she is anorexic, but i am beginning to wonder if she has anorexia nervosa. has anyone had to go this route to keep their child from losing too much weight? christine
  21. the main thing you need to get is a pressure canner if you are going to do vegetables or meats. if you want to do fruits, you need a water bath canner. canning jars, of course. a jar lifter and a canning funnel and a magnetic lid lifter are all nice and are sometimes sold together in a set. you also need to get a good canning book. i think that most grocery...
  22. just wondering if anyone has had any problems with anything the orthodontist might use in your mouth? our ortho is a gem of a guy and is getting me a print out of what is in the products they use. the twins are in braces and molly has retainers. christine
  23. no---not all celiacs have diahreah (SP?) can you ask the doctor to just humor you and run the test? one of my twins was nauseated for 3 months and now that ashe is gluten free, her nauses has improved. christine
