ARCHIVED Lunch Suggestions
momandgirls replied to jackie4's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We're new the diet, too - just a few days, in fact. My daughter's 11 and also a picky eater. She likes celery with raisins and peanut butter, almonds, homemade trail mix, fruit, applesauce, salad from home, raw veggies (green beans or pea pods are favorites). Whole Soy and Co. makes pudding in single serving cups that she loves - they're gluten free and... -
ARCHIVED Bread Machine And Recipe Recommendations?
momandgirls posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I was thinking of going ahead and buying a bread machine. Does anyone have any recommendations? I was told that, because the flours are dense, we need to get one that is heavy duty. Is this true? Does anyone also have some bread recipes they'd be willing share? Thanks! -
ARCHIVED A1 Sauce
momandgirls replied to momandgirls's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you for your replies - I didn't see anything suspicious on the ingredient list and I know you all say that Kraft is good about not hiding wheat ingredients - but I just wanted to make sure. My daughter loves A1 so I hate to take that away from her if I don't have to... -
Does anyone know if A1 sauce is gluten free? Thanks!

ARCHIVED Lactaid Anyone?
momandgirls replied to ErraticBinxie's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Lactaid pills don't work for everyone - neither my daughter nor I can tolerate dairy, even with lactaid pills or lactaid milk. I noticed the 0g lactose on the back of Cabot, too - I was at the factory when I saw it - there is still lactose in the cheese but the FDA rules state that foods with negligible amounts of lactose can still be called lactose free... -
ARCHIVED Please Help With My Grocery List
momandgirls posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi - Ok, just got the formal diagnosis for my daughter this morning. I've done a bit of reading already - given that I knew that Celiac was going to be a possibility for her. I've tried to remember what people have said in terms of what their favorite brands were. I do remember that lots of people have said that Tinkyada has the best pasta, for instance... -
ARCHIVED Sorry - Another Stupid Question!
momandgirls replied to Bonnie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for the explanation of BEST. Just to clarify, aged cheeses do still contain lactose, just very little. The FDA rules state that foods can still have a little lactose and still be called lactose free. Depending on how intolerant you are, you may or may not be able to handle them. We can't tolerate any dairy at all not matter how much. Hopefully... -
ARCHIVED Sorry - Another Stupid Question!
momandgirls replied to Bonnie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi - Aged cheeses/cheddar have such a tiny amount of lactose that they are allowed to state that it is lactose free so, for most people, they can tolerate it. Galaxy foods/Veggie Shreds makes a good mozzarrella substitute (it comes in a green ziplock type bag) and Rice slices makes a good american cheese substitute. We can both eat that without problems... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerance Vs. Celiac
momandgirls posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Can anyone explain to me the difference between Celiac and gluten intolerance? Are they diagnosed the same way? Thanks! -
ARCHIVED Help With Test Results
momandgirls replied to momandgirls's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So, in other words, once you stop ingesting gluten, then your risk is the same as the normal population? What if you already have another autoimmune disease? Will the autoimmune disease get better once you're off gluten? Do you know? Thanks so much! -
ARCHIVED Help With Test Results
momandgirls replied to momandgirls's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I understand the treatment for gluten intolerance and celiac are exactly the same. I guess I would like to know which it is because Celiac puts her at risk for so many other diseases whereas gluten intolerance would not. In the end, I agree...I would like to put her on a gluten free diet and see how she does. The doctors at this particular hospital seem... -
ARCHIVED Help With Test Results
momandgirls posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi - Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts in terms of these test results - even the doctors seem confused...The first time around, my daughter's test results were: endomysial antibody - negative; TTG - 27.3 (positive is anything above 25). Based on this, she had a biopsy. She did not have flattening but did have some of the other signs such as elevated... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free In-flight Meals?
momandgirls replied to erin24's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I'm so glad to hear about Qantas. Qantas, in my opinion, is definitely one of the best airlines around. I've never had a bad experience with them. We are going to Australia in a couple months. My sister lives in Australia and Celiac seems to be much better known and diagnosed more quickly and there are lots more food choices available. My sister doesn't... -
Hi - For anyone who's used Enterolab...was it recommended by your doctor or did you find out about it on your own? I was diagnosed with IBS 12 years ago and my daughter was recently diagnosed. I had the bloodwork done last week - according to my doctor - all were normal except for one (I think it was IgA). He was less than helpful. I asked if he knew about...

Are we the only family that opens the package and lets them sit out on the counter for about week before eating so they get chewy??? -
ARCHIVED Marshmallow Peeps
momandgirls replied to kevsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I saw decorate your own marshmallow peeps packages in CVS. I called the company just to double check that they were gluten free and also lactose free - and they are. The woman was very nice and said that all their products are gluten free. Yay! -
ARCHIVED Dairy-free Breakfast Ideas?
momandgirls replied to DingoGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My daughter has a shake for breakfast every morning. Do you have a blender? Whole Soy and Co. make shakes - they come in single serving plastic bottles in the refrigerated milk section. I've only found it at Whole Foods Market. They come in Strawberry, Raspberry and Apricot/Mango. My daughter loves them (I haven't tried them - I can't have dairy but I... -
ARCHIVED What To Think If Sister's Kids Pediatrician....
momandgirls replied to floridanative's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm new to this board and so don't have much experience...but...somewhere on this board is a list of doctors that people have recommended. Maybe if you can tell us which state she's in, someone here can recommend a good doctor for her to go see? -
ARCHIVED Particularly Helpful Magazines Or Books?
momandgirls replied to momandgirls's topic in Publications & Publicity
celiac3270 - Thank you for your input. The reason I bought those three books is that they were the only ones that the store carried. A teacher of my daughter's has celiac and is the one who had recommended the Gluten Free Bible to me. I had heard, on this board, others saying that they didn't think it was the best book around too. Maybe I'll return it... -
ARCHIVED Particularly Helpful Magazines Or Books?
momandgirls replied to momandgirls's topic in Publications & Publicity
Thank you so much everyone for your responses. I went to Borders yesterday and bought Wheat Free, Worry Free, The Gluten Free Bible and Celiac: A Hidden Epidemic. I flipped through all three last night - I couldn't decide which to start first! I also went to Whole Foods but they didn't have any copies of Living Without. They said they'd hold one for me... -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Results
momandgirls replied to munchkinette's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi - I just looked at my daughter's lab slip which show the normal range - IgA normal range is 70 to 312 so 261 is, indeed, in the normal range... -
ARCHIVED Ok We're Forgoing The Biopsy...now What?
momandgirls replied to celiacsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi - My daughter has Celiac and her care was at Children's in Boston. I just sent you an email with some information. Hope it helps! -
ARCHIVED Particularly Helpful Magazines Or Books?
momandgirls posted a topic in Publications & Publicity
Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place - I wasn't sure where to put it - feel free to move it...I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for particularly good books or magazines? We're still new to Celiac (my daughter was diagnosed in the past couple weeks and I had bloodwork drawn today - I called my GI and asked for it - maybe my diagnosis... -
ARCHIVED Dairy/gluten Free Chocolate
momandgirls posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi - Just thinking ahead to Easter...besides gluten, my daughter can't tolerate any amount of dairy. I can find gluten/dairy free chocolate but it's all dark chocolate and she doesn't like the taste of it (she didn't like it before she was gluten/dairy free either). Is there such thing as a gluten/dairy free chocolate that tastes like milk chocolate? Thanks...
