  1. I love my Zoji. I'd never tried to make bread before my daughter's diagnosis so I don't know how it compares but I do know that the machine makes it so easy - you program it one time and, from then on, I just dump in the ingredients and push one button and you have great bread every time. We've only ever used a mix - usually Pamela's - it's her favorite....
  2. Sorry it took me so long to say thank you to all of you who responded to my post about a chocolate cake. I ended up finally finding a Namaste mix and it was delicious! Everyone loved it - gluten eaters included! We baked it in a round pan and decorated the top as a runway - fruit leather for the landing strip, yellow frosting down the middle for the taxi...
  3. Yes, the restrictions on liquid and gels is for passengers as well as flight crew. However, the restriction does not apply to prescription medications or small bottles (4 oz or less) of necessary but non prescription items. Therefore, small bottles of contact lens solution, saline solution, etc. are allowed. What is not allowed are drinks of any kind, shampoo...
  4. Our favorite is Pamela's amazing bread mix. I haven't tried Anna's yet - I haven't been able to find it in a store and just haven't gotten around to ordering it online. I hear really good things about it, though.
  5. I have the Zojirushi machine and love it! I bought it after my daughter's diagnosis and have only made gluten free bread with it. I think it's worth the extra money. I ordered it from Amazon (they had the best price). I would definitely recommend it.
  6. I didn't do that exactly but I just took a bag of gluten/dairy free coconut cookies (I was in Australia at the time and know that they weren't cookies that are available in the US but any brand, I'm sure, would work fine), crushed them up and added melted dairy free butter until the whole thing stuck together, patted it into a pie pan and stuck it in the...
  7. My daughter is having a craving for shredded wheat (her favorite cereal prior to the diagnosis) - does anyone know if there is a gluten free alternative? Thanks so much!
  8. Mamaw - where do you get your challah? I'd love to find some that's gluten and dairy free. I was going to order some from Everybody Eats for the holidays later this month. Have you tried theirs? Do you have a recipe? Thanks!
  9. I imagine that, yes, you could use paraffin wax. But, I really don't think you need to. It's a rare jar that doesn't seal on its own (without a hot water bath). Once opened, I don't find they spoil any faster than commercially bought jams. Actually, ours are always gone within a month or two and I've never had one spoil in that time. It's super easy and really...
  10. Instant mashed potato flakes are used constantly in my house - I bread things with them and use them to thicken soups and stews. We love it and it works great (every brand I've seen is gluten free but a few do have milk powder in them so read the label).
  11. Metamucil is definitely gluten free and works great for me.
  12. Just another example of things turning pee/poop different colors - did you know that artificial grape flavoring (i.e., medications) can turn pee green (especially in infants)? Just one of those strange things...
  13. It is completely normal to have pink pee after eating fresh beets (it only happens with fresh beets - not canned ones) - it happens to me and everyone and everyone else in my family (diagnosed with Celiac or other digestive problems or not).
  14. Somewhere on this board I had read where someone said that lip smackers were not gluten free. I just looked at their website and it seems ok to me. Does anyone know if they are gluten free or not? My daughter has a bunch of them - just wondering if she can continue to use them or not...thanks!
  15. Thanks Jillian! I'll be near Hanover on Thursday. Now, let's just hope that they have the chocolate cake mix in stock! Her party's on Sunday. Thanks again!
  16. Where in MA can you buy Namaste products? I called Whole Foods and they don't carry them. I was looking for a good chocolate cake mix to make this weekend for my daughter's birthday and Jillian from this board recommended it to me. I've been trying to find a place to get it over the past couple days because there isn't enough time for me to order it online...
  17. That's so funny...I made banana bread this morning, too. My daughter was craving it. I used her cookbook - Fannie Farmer Junior Cookbook - and replaced the regular flour cup for cup with the Gluten Free Pantry flour mix. It is so delicious!! We've been eating it all day and now it's almost gone...
  18. I can't tolerate any cheese (not even soy cheese because of thyroid problems) or lactaid milk or any other dairy at all and, really, the stomach ache I got from the lactose test was minimal. It really wasn't horrible and I was able to continue my day as usual. I think it really is a minimal amount of lactose that they use for the test. I understand that you...
  19. The results of my lactose intolerance test were very abnormal - I had suspected it for a very, very long time but my doctor wanted the test just to make sure. I had a mild stomach ache after the test but it wasn't nearly as bad as, say, if I had a piece of cheese.
  20. Well, I can help with a couple of your questions...I also had the lactose intolerance blood test. My understanding is that the blood test is for adults and the breath test for children (my daughter had the breath test). Also, while any lab can draw for the blood test, it is much more difficult to find a place that will do the breath test (we had to travel...
  21. In my opinion, he's not "embraced" because he has not been published and because he isn't affiliated with a well established and respected medical school/university and/or medical center/hospital.
  22. Hey Jillian - Where can I buy the Namaste cake mix? I've never heard of it...
  23. It looks delicious but she's lactose intolerant, too. Unless they have soy cheese? Do you know if they do?
  24. Thank you so much for your responses - the challah is their photo looks so good and I just would feel terrible if my daughter couldn't have challah for the holidays. I just can't find a good recipe to make it myself. The weather's starting to get cooler now and bread doesn't melt so I think I'll give it a try. I never spoke with them but, like I had said...
  25. My daughter's birthday party is this weekend...she wants an airplane shaped chocolate cake so I need a recipe for a sheet cake that I can then cut up. The only kind we've ever tried is the chocolate cake from Organ and none of us liked it very much. Can I just use a regular recipe and replace the flour with the Gluten Free Pantry flour? (I did that recently...
