ARCHIVED Bread & Bread Recipes
penguin replied to CMCM's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My ONLY attempt at making bread gluten-free was with Pamela's mix in my cuisinart breadmaker. Well, it looked ok... Tasted like crap though. I take that back, it tasted ok, but the texture was like hummus only slimy. And it ate my paddle I have to order a new paddle, because DH threw the whole loaf away after 2 days (moments before... -
Thanks! I don't want to give up mac! I hope the viva glam is gluten-free, I like the charity aspect.

ARCHIVED What To Think If Sister's Kids Pediatrician....
penguin replied to floridanative's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It's too traumatic to take blood? His first celiac was last month and the trauma was in the needle to take the test? I hope he never has a kid as a patient that is showing obvious signs of leukemia or anything, it would be too traumatic to take the blood test! BAH indeed!!! His convenience should have nothing to do with testing. If he gets squirmy around... -
ARCHIVED Whole Foods 365 Brand Yogurt
penguin replied to WGibs's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It is more than likely ok, but look at the date on their gluten-free list, it's from 11/04, so I don't even bother with it. Just call corporate and they should be able to tell you. It's not on their website, but their number is: (512) 477-4455 They're based in Austin, TX. -

ARCHIVED Wow, Walgreens!
penguin posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just received a call from the pharmacy manager at my local Walgreens. I made a complaint at the Walgreens website yesterday because when I asked for the number of the company that made my generic bentyl (Watson), the tech looked at me like I had three heads, and the pharmacist didn't have a clue. I also asked them to put a note on my file that I'm... -
ARCHIVED Why Is There More"wind"?
penguin replied to 4tomorrow's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm also minimally overweight (I'm a little fluffy ) and when I started the diet I lost 6 lbs in a week. I think it was because I had no flipping clue what to eat and therefore, did not eat much. I gained like, a pound of it back since then (a whole 3 weeks ago ). Overall, I'm eating way healthier and not eating fast food, so for me, I think that... -

ARCHIVED Negative Results
penguin replied to lemonade's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is possible. Blood tests aren't that sensitive, especially if you weren't eating gluten before the test. And with the biopsy, the small intestine is 22 ft. long and the endoscope only sees 5 ft of that. It also depends on your dr, how many samples he took, and how the lab interpreted it. Even if you're only gluten intolerant, the treatment is the... -

ARCHIVED Holy Day Of Obligation - Ash Wednesday
penguin replied to penguin's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been fasting and I feel sick, in spite of the protein shake I'm drinking. I think I fall into the sick category for now, which means I'm not subject to fasting, either. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday you're supposed to fast all day, with one modest meal with no meat. On normal mass days, you are supposed to fast until communion. -
That's a lazy doctor's analysis of anemia in women. Unless their period is really heavy or really long, women shouldn't be anemic. It's not like menstruation is a new thing in women, we've been doing it for thousands of years The body knows how to adapt.

ARCHIVED Holy Day Of Obligation - Ash Wednesday
penguin posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
So it's Ash Wednesday, and as much as I'm an admitted CEO (Christmas and Easter Only) Catholic, I do try to observe the big days of obligation. It's my plan to go to mass today, but I can't take communion, right? There's wheat in the wafers? And fasting? Am I required to fast? I have some trouble with hypoglycemia, I've fasted before OK, but I don't know... -

ARCHIVED Really Quick Question....what Is The Strongest
penguin replied to danikali's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
No wonder they didn't work for me... I usually take stomach meds with tylenol, because there is usually pain involved. I've truly never really had anything work. Except the antispasmodics like bentyl (prescription) Tagamet is good also, and keep in mind that you can take tums as well as one of the other meds if you really need to. Tums is just calcium -
ARCHIVED Is There A Change (increase) In Your Reaction To Gluten After Going Off Of It?
penguin replied to kari's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hang on a minute...you had positve antibodies? All of them? Some of them? And you had damage? Celiac is known (in antiquated terms) as NON-tropical sprue. Your doc may not have had a flipping clue what they were talking about Or if they did, the clearly did a poor job of conveying it... And yes, a crumb can make you sick. Something gluten free... -

ARCHIVED Do Your Kidneys Seem To Hurt?
penguin replied to penguin's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That's what I get exactly, only in the neck and shoulders (and the back). I always thought I was getting the flu and I never did get it (knock on wood that I won't). Glad to know I'm not the only one.
