  1. You know, there are a few people floating around who have not improved on a gluten-free diet. Some have Lyme disease, I know one who had an intestinal bacterial infection that resulted in a positive biopsy-diagnosis of celiac, and some are diagnosed with refractory sprue. I was wondering if whatever you were diagnosed with might be of interest to those...
  2. I think the B-vitamins and vitamin D also play a role in neuro issues, and DH (a PhhD chemist) says that multivitamin supplements contain the RDA which according to him is a bare minimum, not an optimum amount. I would also wonder if something else is going on to cause either a malabsorption issue or if something is bonding to the vitamins (in supplement...
  3. Can't find the study, but my mom had sent me a copy of a study that linked mild-to-moderate hearing loss in middle-aged women to low folate levels.
  4. You CAN make it work if you plan carefully and stand up for yourself. Bring canned food with you if you need to! Hormel makes some gluten-free shelf-stable entrees, just read the labels carefully. Bring whatever foods sit well with your tummy in one of those large lunchboxes with a shoulder-strap, and put a freezer pack or blue ice in. Call the training...
  5. Holy CRAP. My next question would be, does that mean that all corn STARCH could potentially have this issue???????????? If it does, then, boy, are we all in big trouble.
  6. HappyHolly, I think it's the other way around (at least, the way I see it)--whoever came up with the idea that 200 ppm is "safe" for celiacs (the Codex standard for years) is incorrect, and many celiacs react to way, way less. So this is why there is such a push to reduce the so-called "safe" limit of 200 ppm to 20 or less. So being produced on shared...
  7. It's possible that I am not correct here, but I believe that the corn syrup we buy in the grocery aisle for baking is NOT the same as the high fructose corn syrup that the industry uses as cheap sugar. You can also make a sugar syrup substitute for corn syrup by combining a cup of sugar with a little water--can't remember if it's 1/4 cup or 1/2 cup--and...
  8. I know some of the members here have had difficulty with mercury toxicity, and it's certainly something to look for in the autistic population, along with leaky gut syndrome. I just saw this article: Open Original Shared Link. I did not know about this before. I thought I should pass it along here, as there have been several posts asking for recommendations...
  9. There are quite a few members here who I think do know a lot about C diff. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them. But what I would do is do a bit more research and find out if the antibiotic you were given is the correct one for C diff, or if your doctor just gave a basic antibiotic to shut you up (sorry, some docs actually do that, they've been doing it...
  10. I just wanted to mention (and you can pass this on to your daughter if you like) that I lost 20 pounds in a very short period of time, after going off gluten--and I wasn't even trying to lose weight. I had been slender most of my life, but gained weight as gluten intolerance symptoms appeared in early adulthood. It's not the carbs--it's the gluten! The...
  11. The biopsy has been the "gold standard" of diagnosis since the 1960's--but nowadays, the blood tests available are far, far more accurate ind informative than what was available 50 years ago! Most doctors would consider your child's blood work to be a definitive diagnosis of celiac. Now, it's possible that there might be something else that your doctor...
  12. Thanks, Peter!
  13. It's common to have vaginal spotting at the beginning of menopause.
  14. My 16-year-old student would scream "celiac!!!!" in answer to your question (as would I). She went faithfully to physical therapy for three YEARS, and was on various meds for the pain that they said was some variant of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. After 2 weeks gluten-free, her pain went from 8 (on a scale of 1-10) to 0-1. Turns out, she does have...
  15. Thank you SO much, Gentleheart. It all makes sense to me. Perhaps someone could post a copy of what got added to the FAQ?
  16. Simply Potatoes is a brand of pre-fab potatoes (Open Original Shared Link). I'm assuming that the recipe means mashed potatoes; I'm planning to use Potato Buds, and yes, I think coconut milk or any dairy-free milk would be fine. Dairy-free sour cream, too. Jerseyangel, I was wondering if using a risotto-type rice with chicken broth, soy milk, soy sour...
  17. This is adapted (easily) from DinnerPlanner.org: PIEROGIE CASSEROLE - PITTSBURGH STYLE INGREDIENTS: 10 Tinkyada lasagna noodles cooked (If you can't find them, use any gluten-free small pasta, like shells or macaroni. If absolutely desperate, use rice!) 1 (24 oz) package of Simply Potatoes 8 oz. sour cream 1 tablespoon chives 2 1/2 cups cheddar...
  18. Due to lousy weather (we're having snow, sleet, and freezing rain all mixed together here), the above-mentioned meeting has been postponed til March 25 (same time and place). Please e-mail Linda if you plan to go!
  19. Find out if there is a celiac support group in your area or in the nearest large city. If you contact them, they most likely maintain a list of doctors who know about celiac (in other words, doctors who know what they're doing, so they'd likely know about alternative diagnoses to celiac as well), AND doctors to avoid (sounds like you've already found one...
  20. Welcome aboard, leslie, and I hope that celiac ends up being the answer to all your family's health problems! It may sound awful to say "I hope your whole family has this disease," but I say it because I know that it's the easiest and cheapest disorder in the world to manage--a simple diet change, and everyone is perfectly healthy! Good luck, and please...
  21. Shayesmom wrote almost everything I wanted to, except she wrote it way better than I would have! I just want to add an example of the result of a well-known drug that was "successfully"peer-reviewed. This is from Discovery science magazine--I think it was the August 2008 issue? I can't find an internet link right now, but I have a houseful of extra...
  22. I did not edit the original post, for clarification or anything else! I didn't edit it at all--that was how I wrote it the first time. You can tell, because it appears in psawyer's post as a quote.
  23. I'm not sure I understand what you're asking me. I didn't say that "gluten-free" means that it DOES contain 200ppm, just that it may contain UP TO 200 ppm. According to Kikkoman, their soy sauce can be listed as safe, too, even though wheat is the second ingredient on the label. See: http://surefoodsliving.com/wp-content/uplo...ment_2_4_05.pdf That...
  24. Tests for celiac on very young children are notoriously inaccurate, but mostly for false negatives. I've not heard of false positives before. I would say that it's extremely likely that your little one DOES have celiac, or at the very least, a severe intolerance to gluten--which might amount to the same thing as celiac, as the current mode of diagnosis...
