For those who don't yet know this, "Gluten-Free" in the US does not mean gluten-free. It means that it may contain up to 200 ppm (parts per million) gluten. Rice Dream rice milk, for example, is processed with barley enzymes, and contains residual gluten, but they are allowed to call it "gluten-free" as long as it tests as 200 ppm or less. 200 ppm...

I can't help wondering if it is a variant of dermatitis herpetiformis. When I looked it up, it said that it was diagnosed based on appearance, and that biopsies are generally not performed unless something else is suspected. Well, we all know that celiac is the LAST thing they ever suspect!!!! And pregnancy can certainly kick-start celiac/gluten intolerance...

I grew up with the pure maple syrup, and I gotta say, when you're used to the pure stuff and then try the Mrs. Butterworth's or the Log Cabin, the chemical aftertaste is obvious--and makes you wonder why anyone buys them (okay, I know, I know, they're cheaper!). Also, they're full of high-fructose corn syrup, which, despite massive advertising to convince...

ARCHIVED Help! Is This Possible?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to irish daveyboy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I agree with above suggestions, and also think you might want to rule out: candida infection Lyme Disease (which can happen ANYWHERE to ANYONE, despite what most doctors say--40% of currently diagnosed Lyme patients do not recall ever having been bitten by a tick nor having had the famous "bull's-eye" rash. I do not have Lyme myself (that I know of)... -
We've all been there with the wishful thinking! Most of us have also found that those first few months "gluten-free" were only gluten-lite, as it took most of us many months to figure out the ins and outs of gluten. It's very easy once you've figured it out, but it IS a steep learning curve. The problem is that there are many "hidden" sources...

I don't know how to reverse long-term hearing loss, but I do know that cell phones, cordless land phones, and any listening device with an ear bud made mine worse. Being a musician, I am pretty sensitive to changes in how things sound, and my hearing DEFINITELY loses a bit immediately following any of those things. It seems like a no-brainer that long...

All of the above posts are good advice. It's also possible that the timing is a coincidence, and that loud noise exposure caused your tinnnitus. It could be from your cell phone, from an iPod, or even from everyday things like a hairdryer or lawnmower (if you were the one operating the lawn mower). I had to deal with this a couple of months ago. Mine...

ARCHIVED Celiac's Vs Gluten Intolerance Diff?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Eric-C's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The members of NIH have serious financial ties to the pharmaceutical industry, according to mercola.com and several other sources, including Senator Dan Burton. The pharmaceutical industry is the strongest lobby there is. I'm married to a scientist (who spent many years in DC, working for the government), so I'm not totally out of the loop! I totally... -
Me, too--never even dreamed it could be related to anything else until the major thirst disappeared when I went off gluten. The interesting thing was, my blood sugar was going higher and higher, to borderline pre-diabetic levels--until I went off gluten. After going off gluten, I was still eating plenty of carbs (rice , potatoes, & Fritos), and loads...

Eric, I'm glad you don't care about it's being off-topic--but the off-topic part is interesting enough to be a separate thread. . Maybe one of the mods would like to move this portion to its own thread? I don't see politics playing quite the same role in celiac as you see. The "enriching" has nothing to do with gluten, it's just spraying synthetic... -
I was very involved with this letter, as I wrote the first draft (which Gentleheart vastly improved, for which we should all be grateful!), and I strongly disagree with you. It is always foolish to make assumptions. You know the old saying: Never ^SSUME--because you make an ^SS out of U and ME.

I am convinced that the reason for this is that medical science is driven and funded by the pharmaceutical industry. There is no $$ for them if we change our diet--in fact, they lose an ENORMOUS amount of $$ since we no longer need their drugs for IBS, bloating, diarrhea, irregularity, joint pain, reflux, etc. Notice, though, that instead of trumpeting... -
ARCHIVED Scared To Death Of My Biopsy
Fiddle-Faddle replied to GFinBC's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have not seen anyone implying this. If anything, it works the other way--starting a gluten-free diet and seeing if it not only helps but completely resolves symptoms does not rob one of one's choice to try a biopsy/endoscopy. And, as WW340 illustrated, obviously an endoscopy is a given with long-term symptoms and family Hx of intestinal lymphoma. As I... -

ARCHIVED Positive Biopsy But Negative Labs? Confused....plz Help
Fiddle-Faddle replied to ER nurse's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is extremely likely that you do have celiac. However, there ARE non-celiac conditions that cause villi damage, including intestinal bacterial infections. But celiac would be much more more likely, especially if you were gluten-lite or gluten-free at the time of the blood work, or were on steroids (like prednisone), at the time of blood work, which... -
ARCHIVED Pittsburgh North Hills Support Group!
Fiddle-Faddle posted a topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
There will be a North Hills Celiac Support Group gathering on Wednesday, January 28 at 7:00pm. Here is the opportunity for us to come together to see how we can support each other be it thru knowledge, experience, answer questions, or maybe asking a lot of questions with hopes of finding answers or at least be pointed in the direction of where to go to find... -

How about if you post what is typical of a day's menus for your little guy? Maybe one of us can find a glitch somewhere.... As for recipe changes, I know in the last several months, Sam's Club Rotisserie Chicken has changed from gluten-free to containing gluten. And, idiot that I am, I had been eating chicken salad from our local grocery store... -

ARCHIVED Celiac's Vs Gluten Intolerance Diff?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Eric-C's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Good heavens, there are MANY studies out there, much more recent than what Dr. Fine quoted. Here is one, fromFinland, published in Gastroenterology November 24, 2008: BACKGROUND & AIMS: The diagnostic criteria for celiac disease require small-bowel mucosal villous atrophy with crypt hyperplasia (Marsh III). However, mucosal damage develops gradually... -

I'll try to find the following studies: As mentioned at the outset, not all gluten sensitive individuals develop villous atrophy. Evidence for this has been around for a long time. In 1980, a medical publication titled -

Fiddle-Faddle replied to Eric-C's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
But gluten sensitivity is what everybody here has been calling positive serology and negative biopsy! I'm not saying they're right--quite the opposite, you know I've been fighting that one for a long time--but that's been the whole source of heated debate right there in a nutshell, the fact that if you don't have a positive biopsy, nobody considers that... -
So am I, but I totally understand what luvs2eat was trying to communicate--for those who spend several DAYS with their head stuck down the toilet, in total misery, cheating would be like intentionally eating rat poison--totally unthinkable. I really don't think luvs2eat was trying to make it into anything competitive. And I do feel that it's helpful...

My endocrinologist initially told me that a low-carb diet is always recommended for PCOS patients. When she diagnosed me with celiac (based on bloodwork and DH), she said, 'Hmmm, maybe the reason a low-carb diet works for PCOS is that it's low-gluten or no-gluten." If your doctor doesn't see this, then maybe it's time to find another doctor, especially...
