ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Acid reflux is a VERY common symptom of celiac/gluten intolerance. Many of us here have said that we'd always thought it was the marina sauce that gave us reflux, when all along, it was the PASTA!!! Just think how many acid reflux meds there are out there--and how many cases of reflux are actually caused by either undiagnosed celiac or by some... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
But tallforagirl, that is based on the current method of diagnosing celiac--by biopsy, which among many members of this board (but not all) is considered woefully inadequate, as it only diagnoses "end-stage" celiac. There are many people who have villi damage whose damage is missed the first time round (22 feet of intestines, patchy damage, and a couple... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I totally understand why you did it this way, and I don't mean to sound like I am criticizing your decision. I am NOT--obviously, it did work out best for you this way. But there is something that REALLY REALLY REALLY bothers me about intentionally damaging a child's intestines in order to get a positive diagnosis, and I just can't get past that. ... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
AFAIK, the biggest risk with the endoscopy/biopsy is the sedation--there are both children and adults who have had allergic reactions, or seized, or even died on the table. Yes, those kinds of reactions are rare--but they do happen, as do mistakes by the anesthesiologist. In fact, these days, mistakes are more likely, as in order to cut costs, the doctors... -

Neesee, I don't think Emmylou's mind was made up. I think the post that hit her wrong was not intended to do so, but I actually had the same first impression of that post as she did. When I saw who wrote it, I re-thought it, as that poster's comments often seem to hit people the wrong way, but I think it's unintentional. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Sonia, my understanding is that there are false negatives, especially in young children, but no false positives. If your little guy was making antibodies to gluten, it doesn't matter if the numbers are high or low, the important thing is that he was making them at all! People without celiac/gluten intolerance do NOT make antibodies to gluten. As far... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
No, it's NOT!!!! As long as you have a letter from your doctor stating why your kid is missing school (diarrhea, vomiting, cramps, or just a letter stating that the child is ill and under the care of a physician, and is missing school with the physician's knowledge and approval), you don't need a diagnosis of celiac. The same goes for travel. -

Two thoughts on Synthroid: 1) I had some major depression the first time I was on Synthroid, and my endocrinologist said that she'd seen this several times, and suspected something not-quite-right with Synthroid brand, and switched me to Levoxyl. End of depression. She later told me several patients did better on Levoxyl, and she didn't know why, but... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Debbie, it doesn't make any difference whether or not he is "really celiac." If he is "only" gluten intolerant," that could either be early-stage celiac, or a non-celiac gluten-intolerance, but either way, gluten still makes his body attack itself--and he could end up with multiple autoimmune diseases. I have a 16-year-old student, who has been in... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We not only turned down biopsy, we turned down bloodwork! We didn't intend to go that route, we weren't even thinking that our kids had a problem with gluten. The pediatrician said, "well, children get tummy aches, don't worry about it." So we didn't. But I was diagnosed, and went gluten-free, and decided to make the house gluten-free except for "their... -
ARCHIVED Questions For All Those Who Have Ever Had Fibromyalgia
Fiddle-Faddle replied to nasalady's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Two migraine triggers for me were: 1) hormone changes (puberty, and post-childbirth) 2) changes in my glasses prescription: after each child, my eyes somehow became LESS near-sighted--so wearing glasses/contact lenses with too strong a prescription triggered migraines until I got new (weaker) glasses. Also, I am now careful not to have glaring light... -

ARCHIVED Nicu Is Feeding My Newborn Gluten
Fiddle-Faddle replied to mom2two's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Good for you! That's wonderful! You might want to speak to someone from your local La Leche League, or the hospital lactation consultant, or both (just like doctors, they vary in knowledge and experience). I found that the NICU staff was NOT knowledgeable about feeding issues--they gave my son a preemie nipple because they said he was too weak to suck... -
ARCHIVED Nicu Is Feeding My Newborn Gluten
Fiddle-Faddle replied to mom2two's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Congratulations on your newborn--I'm sorry you're going through so much stress right now. Is there ANY way you can pump your milk right now and have them give it to the baby? Studies have shown that moms of preemies produce a very different kind of milk--high calorie, easy to digest, and EXACTLY what preemies need. It must be very difficult for you right... -
ARCHIVED Clould This Be The Answer?!
Fiddle-Faddle replied to bakingbarb's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Celiac is NOT a food allergy! It's not an allergy at all, but an autoimmune response, where the immune system is triggered by gluten to attack YOU (intestines, joints, skin, thyroid, brain, pancreas, etc.). Allergy testing shows if you are allergic to something, not if you have a dangerous autoimmune response to it. You need a celiac panel (bloodwork... -
ARCHIVED Pitzel (italian Cookie) Recipe Needed
Fiddle-Faddle replied to buffettbride's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Pamela's has almond meal, which is heavier than regular flour. Tom Sawyer brand gluten-free flour claims to be substitable for regular flour, cup-for-cup, with no additional adjustments. Betterbatter flour is very substitutable, but for breads, you need to double the liquid. I'm not sure about cookies. There are at least 2 recipes on www.celiac.com... -
The best recipe for challah that I've found is at www/betterbatter.org. They sell a MARVELOUS flour mix, and that's what they use in the recipe they post. I DON'T use the braidable challah recipe (there are several different challah recipes), but the basic batter recipe. I make it in this pan: http://www.(Company Name Removed - They Spammed This Forum...

I'd say you have your answer already, since you already noticed problems when he eats gluten. Unlike your doctors, you already KNOW that by the time symptoms appear, damage has already been done. Why would you even consider letting them eat gluten? I know it's inconvenient to have to deal with the preschool, but damaging your child further would be...

ARCHIVED Please Help, Daughter Diagnosed With Celiac?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Heat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It took most of us on this board MONTHS to really figure out which foods have "hidden" (as in, not obvious) gluten. Here is a list of common foods that we never thought would have gluten, but DO: 1) Soy sauce (most varieties contain wheat! LaChoy and San-J Wheat-free Tamari are safe) 2) Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes (contain barley malt)... -
I didn't even bother testing my kids. They are all gluten-free. My oldest son had years of "bathroom problems." My middle kid's eczema got better when the family went "gluten-lite" (in order to facilitate my own gluten-free-ness), came back with gluten, and disappeared again on a 100% gluten-free diet. My daughter's symptoms are inconsistent, but I...

Fiddle-Faddle replied to angelschick's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have had 2 endoscopies without any anesthesia whatsoever(unless you count the throat spray), and can assure you that, while it isn't pleasant, there is no pain whatsoever. According to my doctor, the anesthesia is for the convenience of the doctor, not for the benefit of the patient. -
ARCHIVED Celiac And 4 Months Pregnant
Fiddle-Faddle replied to mandigirl1's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Actually, this is not true. There are people who have biopsy-diagnosed celiac who do NOT have either of the 2 genes considered in the US to be associated with celiac. There are another 5 genes that are considered to be associated with celiac/gluten intolerance in both Europe and Asia. Also, there are a tremendous number of people (on this board, even... -
Can you work out a compromise with your daughter? Agree that you will not discuss celiac with her if she agrees to make sure that you don't suffer from cc in her house (and you'll have to remember that it is HER house, not yours--very tough for any grown-up to have to deal with). If she wants you to have meals together, act like you think it's a marvelous...

ARCHIVED Blood Work Only?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Jackchick's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Every lab has a different range of what is considered high or low, so I can't say for sure, but--if you are producing ANY of these antibodies, then you are producing antibodies to gluten! People who don't have any problem with gluten don't produce antibodies to it. The fact that you were producing any at all while on a gluten-lite diet, plus your response...
