  1. Gluten intolerance can cause terrible eczema! My son and also the son of a friend both have had this response to gluten. However, that doesn't guarantee that gluten is causing your daughter's eczema!! (Oh, it would be SO nice to have a guarantee!!!) Is she using hand lotion that has wheat germ oil or oatmeal in it, by any chance? I know the conventional...
  2. Patti, with all due respect, I don't think that I was out of bounds for commenting on Lisa's post. I agree with you that it's fine for anyone who wants to sign to do so, and I also think that it's fine for anyone who does NOT want to sign to NOT do so. Since it was implied that someone felt that they don't have the right to sign because they never...
  3. You know, MommaG, I couldn't figure it out, either. It sounds like you are only interested in observing, not participating? But I had to read a lot into it to come up with that conclusion, so I'm assuming (not a good thing!). Of course, maybe you meant that you answered her question in a private pm? I have no experience with Enterolab, either, but...
  4. I just wanted to add a list of gluteny foods where the gluten is often not obvious: 1) Rotisserie chicken (marinated in soy sauce, which usually contains wheat) 2) Soy sauce (LaChoy and San-J Wheat-free Tamari are safe) 3) Deli tuna salad (contains bread crumbs) 4) "lite" ice creams and cream cheeses, dips, etc (contain wheat starch as thickener...
  5. You may hate me for this, but I'd suggest that your kitchen be 100% gluten-free. It's possible that she might be sneaking gluten foods, I know another kid who has such terrible trouble with sneaking food, he was even trading lunches at school and even stealing bits of bread. It's not an emotional problem, it's totally an addiction problem, because the...
  6. Hi, everyone, I have a friend in Long Island whose doctors just keep prescribing meds to mask her symptoms--and when the meds produce new symptoms, like migraines, he tells her that the med doesn't have that side effect, even though it's listed on the package insert! He also told her her thyroid is just fine, even though her TSH is 5.6 (should be under...
  7. Claudia, your doctor apparently doesn't realize that nearly half of those diagnosed with celiac can actually GAIN weight rather than lose it. Weight loss is not necessary for a diagnosis of celiac, and is not part of its definition, anyway. Most of us here believe that IBS is almost always (if not always) undiagnosed celiac/gluten intolerance anyway....
  8. Is she continuing to grow in terms of height? Or has that fallen, too? Are you still breastfeeding? (Sorry if you mentioned it and I missed it.) If so, I would NOT wean at this time! If you weaned within the last month or so, I wonder if it might be worth relactating and pumping? Breastmilk goes directly to brain and bone growth, as that is the most...
  9. You appear to be contradicting yourself. Your post is titled, "A Crisis of Will," implying that it is about willpower? Nobody can force you into a situation where you have to eat anything to which you are allergic or sensitive.
  10. It looks like she's not getting nearly enough fat to me. Try salmon--it's very high in GOOD fat. Coconut milk, too.
  11. You can use Rice Chex. When you think about it, though, this kind of highlights how very unhealthy our standard Western diet is, especially for toddlers. Fresh fruit would certainly be healthier than sugary, starchy, pre-fab snacks. Sliced grapes were always a favorite with our toddlers as an on-the-go snack. (Important to slice in half or quarters...
  12. There is also a new natural-foods market that just opened up in the Strip District. They are trying to compete with Whole Paycheck I mean Whole Foods, and they are amazing--much BIGGER than whole foods, AND less $$. Their produce could use some expanding, but it's SO nice not to have to fight traffic to Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. They said that they...
  13. Just wanted to add: be careful of Soy sauce (often contains wheat)(LaChoy is safe but sucks) tuna salad (deli kinds contain bread crumbs, no kidding!) rotisserie chickens (often marinated in wheat-containing-soy sauce) "lite" ice creams (contain wheat starch as thickener) Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes (contain barley malt=gluten)
  14. Welcome aboard, and oh, I am SO sorry to hear about your mom. It must have been very difficult for you (and still is, I bet). For now, you don't really need any special, gluten-free foods. Stick with rice, veggies, plain grilled beef, chicken, fish, etc. If you've never had a problem with eggs, there's a lot you can do with eggs! For now, the only...
  15. You might want to report this apparent dietary response to your doctor. He might want to do an endoscopy/biopsy (which DOES have risks, and anyone who says it doesn't is either mistaken or lying). It won't be accurate unless your daughter is eating gluten, though (same with the bloodwork). Both bloodwork and biopsy can be inaccurate in toddlers because...
  16. Wow--I had a great experience with Uno.--no bread sticks, and they even made a dish not on the menu at my request. I asked if they could take some plain, unbreaded eggplant, and use it as a kind of pizza crust with their pizza sauce, and cheese. The manager talked with the chef, and came back with the offer to use those ingredients as a kind of casserole...
  17. Believe it or not, there really are recipes for gluten-free versions of the things you love that are JUST AS GOOD as the gluteny originals. These include pizza, cake, bread, cookies, muffins, biscuits, pancakes, and brownies. The premade gluten-free ones you buy at the store taste like styrofoam. The homebaked ones take much less effort than you'd...
  18. If the results are "inconclusive", then my guess would be that the results are positive, but that your doctors don't know how to read the tests correctly. It's like pregnancy--there is no such thing as an inconclusive test, either you are or you aren't. If she is producing antibodies to gluten, she is quite likely to have celiac, especially if she is improving...
  19. That "trace amount" was enough to cause severe eczema in a 5-year-old I know, whose tests for celiac were all negative, so he is "just" gluten intolerant. His eczema was so severe , it looked like he had third-degree burns on his face and hands. This was JUST FROM RICE DREAM--he was otherwise gluten-free, and the eczema went away when they stopped the Rice...
  20. I believe it would, Jason, because the difference between gluten sensitivity and celiac disease is NOT how sensitive you are to gluten. The only difference seems to be in the definition of diagnosing celiac--which is by damaged villi of the intestines. Now, for many people with "just" gluten sensitivity, they might be MORE sensitive to gluten than some...
  21. I don't think the signatures should be limited to those who have had Enterolab testing, as many of us have been recommending Enterolab to other board members even though we didn't need Enterolab ourselves. I would be happy to sign my full name.
  22. Actually, I don't think this is true. Remember University of CHicago's study from 2006 that said that it takes an average of ELEVEN years to get diagnosed with celiac? Well, for most of those 11 years, most celiacs are diagnosed with IBS--which mysteriously VANISHES when they go gluten-free. REALLY. I think you've been mostly gluten-free for a while...
  23. I do think that the standard celiac panel (which is NOT what you've gotten) would be a very important test to have done--and like ravenwoodglass says, it needs to be done BEFORE going gluten-free, as the tests measure antibodies to gluten--which you don't produce unless you're eating it. (People without gluten sensitivity/celiac disease do NOT produce antibodies...
  24. Gentleheart, that's fabulous. That's the letter I was TRYING to write, but I was too tired to make it come out right. Thank you! I wonder if we ought to add one thing: "Some members have pointed out that conditions such as Lyme Disease or intestinal bacterial infections might be able to cause false positives. It leaves them wondering if stool testing...
  25. Where I live, they're gluten-free, too. Do they have two different formulations?
