  1. From what I keep reading, they do, but not all symptoms, and the gluten-free diet is not a cure for Lyme disease. As I understand it, Lyme disease can often cause a non-celiac gluten intolerance that mimics severe celiac in almost every way. I think fibromyalgia is certainly real--but I believe thatrather than being a stand-alone disease, it is the symptom...
  2. from the celiac sprue association website: Dermatitis Herpetiformis (DH) is an important associated disorder or complication of celiac disease which is manifested in the form of a skin rash. There is strong evidence that the changes in the intestinal mucosa and the immunologic findings in the majority of patients diagnosed with DH are identical with those...
  3. Another possibility: what are you drinking when you eat your sandwich? If it's milk, perhaps you need to be (at least, temporarily) dairy-free. Many of us couldn't tolerate dairy products at the beginning of a gluten-free diet, as our intestines had not yet healed (the villi, which are damaged by gluten, are what produce the lactase enzyme, that digests...
  4. Joanne, you might want to pm rachel_24 on this board. She has lived in California all her life, has no pets, and was never aware of a tick bite (let alone any rash)--and she, like a ridiculously high number of people on this board, was definitively diagnosed with Lyme disease. Besides for an overlap of symptoms, Lyme shares a very important link with...
  5. I never had a diagnosis of fibro--I was just at the beginning of many consistent-with-fibro symptoms, which all resolved on the gluten-free diet. But I had only had most of those symptoms (joint pain, intestinal symptoms, tiredness, rash, reflux, etc) for a relatively short time. I would think that having those symptoms attack your body for years would...
  6. If your PB and jam were ever used by a gluten-eater, there are probably gluteny bread crumbs from the knife/spoon in them. Most people spread some PB on their bread, and then put the crumby knife back in the PB to get more, leaving crumbs in the PB. You could have your own, CLEARLY LABELED GLUTEN-FREE PB, or ask everyone to be careful not to double-dip...
  7. Well, if you are inviting them to your home, it's your call--and your responsibility, really--to inform them of food allergies/intolerances in your home beforehand. Gracious guests DO show up with something (though they usually call ahead and ask, "What can I bring?"), although you can be equally gracious by saying at the time of invite (or writing it...
  8. Many people here seem to have cold sores as a reaction to gluten. It is possible that gluten might have caused your cold sores, in which case, you might not need the acyclovir after all. I would also worry that taking an antiviral drug might have the same unpleasant result as antibiotics; in other words, it might ultimately make the viruses STRONGER....
  9. I can't help wondering if the diagnostic criteria for DH is either inaccurate or incomplete. They used to say that you couldn't have celiac if you weren't wasting away, and they were obviously wrong there! I bet that someday, they'll discover that all these pseudo-eczema and pseudo-psoriasis (ps ps!) rashes are actually forms of DH and that the current...
  10. Welcome aboard, Katie! Lots of good gluten-free stuff in Pittsburgh, including a gluten-free bakery (Gluuteny, in Squirrel Hill on Murray Avenue), and a huge natural-foods store in the strip district called "Next to Nature," that is planning on installing a gluten-free bakeshop (they may have already done so). There is also Soergel's Farm Market, just off...
  11. For chocolate chip cookies--these are THE BEST!!! Open Original Shared Link The brown rice flour mix they call for is listed here: Open Original Shared Link You can use half "Bob's Red Mill" brown rice flour and half cheap white rice flour mix instead of the "super-finely ground brown rice flour mix" they call for--it's really hard to find that super...
  12. Aha! That's where we come in. We've all been through this ourselves, so we know how to get around the styrofoam-and-cardboard taste of the pre-made gluten-free products. Tell us what he wants to eat, and we'll all come up with recipes and/or good brand names and/or how to doctor up the not-so-good. For snacks, the easiest thing is to get "normal...
  13. WHOA!!! DANGER< WILL ROBINSON< DANGER DANGER DANGER Colorado, the steroids simply shut off your immune system's reaction to gluten--TEMPORARILY. Your intestines (hopefully) healed with a gluten-free diet, but you MUST remain fanatical about your diet unless you want to do further damage. Studies show that it only takes 1/16 of a piece of...
  14. Three possibilities immediately come to mind: 1) Your intestines have healed already to the point where you can eat a little gluten without FEELING symptoms (but intestinal damage may be ongoing, nonetheless), 2) You may not have a problem with gluten after all 3) Your cold MEDS might be shutting off your immune system's reaction (but again, damage may...
  15. Hang in there, Amber. Gluten COULD be at the root of all your symptoms. But you also might be dealing with additional food intolerances, or an intestinal infection, or a candida issue (systemic yeast infection), or even Lyme disease. You won't likely find the answer immediately, which is frustrating. The best thing for you now foodwise, I think...
  16. Amber, can WE tell him to let you have a gluten-free kitchen??? Honestly--if you love someone, you don't DREAM of risking their health for something stupid like gluten. I suppose he could say that if you loved him, you wouldn't ask him to sacrifice his gluten for your health, but that would kind of make it awfully clear how you rate compared to food...
  17. A colonoscopy will NOT diagnose celiac, as it is to examine the colon. Celiac is seen in the villi lining the intestines, which are viewed during an endoscopy. That doesn't mean you shouldn't get a colonoscopy, especially if you are over 50. And if you've had years of intestinal problems, a colonoscopy might be valuable anyway, at least as a baseline...
  18. Hadabadday, you are not an idiot. They probably checked for fluorescence (DH rashes are fluorescent, for some reason) in the office, then did a biopsy to confirm. And I hope you are soon able to change your name to HadaGOODday! Rumbles--brilliant post! I love the idea of pressuring the doctor to LEARN something about celiac!
  19. May I suggest that you make ONE meal that everyone can eat? Gluten-free is perfectly healthy for everyone; gluten is not a necessary nutrient--in fact, it's NOT a nutrient! What are your hubby's dietary restrictions? Maybe we can help you come up with easy-to-cook-but-still-yummy recipes. Many of us here have kids, so we know the challenge of coming...
  20. Pale stool can be a symptom of celiac OR hepatitis. And, of course, it is possible to have both. Most of us here thought that we were gluten-free right after diagnosis--and then found out than many of the things we were eating contained "hidden" gluten, so we weren't as gluten-free as we'd thought! Just in case you have had the same difficulties as...
  21. I have the same reaction as the above 2 posters: 1)Yes, you sound like one of us, but 2)If you got the diagnosis 7 months ago, have you been gluten-free for those 7 months? If so, and you are experiencing NO relief from your symptoms, that doesn't necessarily mean you DON'T have celiac, but there is likely something else going on, either in addition...
  22. The first time I ever tried cold medicine was in college, because in the dorm they handed out free "dorm survival kits" which contained cheap toothbrush and paste, Noxema, and OTC meds--cold meds, Tylenol, Pamprin, and even sleep meds (like you need THAT in college???). I tried the cold med the first time I got a cold, and I remain amazed that anyone...
  23. Since there are studies showing that a person with celiac can have measurable damage from as little ingested gluten as 1/16th of a slice of bread, and since she was told that it was NOT celiac when it was, it seems to me that she does have actionable damage--to her villi. There is also the question of those 3 years before she found out that she did have...
  24. I'm sure the above posters are correct. However, I would still be tempted to write a non-confrontational, very direct letter to the doctor who said you DIDN'T have it, and include copies of the original biopsy that he ignored or missed, as well as records of the last 4 years' worth of serious health problems AND the out-of-pocket costs to you. Tell...
  25. Welcome aboard! If there is any food you crave, post a thread about it (or post on this thread), and many of us will do our best to provide you with GOOD gluten-free substitutions so you can have the same foods over the holidays that you've always had--just made from scratch from gluten-free ingredients! For example, if you always have green bean casserole...
