  1. Nah, it wouldn't let me view the recipe because I haven't purchased anything from Amazon in the past year. Thanks, anyway...
  2. T, I will go today to the Sisters of Divine Providence and put Megan's name on their prayer board. Would you mind very much posting what you think the best wording might be? I have this feeling that it might be better if the nuns get a bit more specific than a general prayer for health and recovery. I was thinking of "cure for reflux and a successful heart...
  3. Thanks for posting this. What is "white wheat," anyway?
  4. any starch/ thickener will work!! You can use whatever combination of gluten-free flours you like. I think instant mashed potato flakes would work fine, too, or baby rice cereal.
  5. I would agree with above posts-and would like to warn you that, if he has celiac or not, you need to research vaccines as well. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE HIM UP-TO-DATE ON VACCINES--YOU CAN SPREAD THEM OUT ON WHATEVER SCHEDULE YOU WANT. There are a couple of threads on vaccines here--try to look them up, as there are a lot of links to studies, and both sides...
  6. How do you do a search inside option?
  7. I just printed out your PAKE!
  8. Lots more prayers coming your way! You are such a wonderful mother. Who suggested the fundo in the first place? (I hope they are not only apologizing, but moving heaven and earth to find a good solution--one that YOUR gut says is good!)
  9. Taco Seasoning 1 T chili powder 2 t onion powder (or just grate some fresh onion) 1 t cumin 1 t garlic powder 1 t paprika (I use Hungarian sweet) 1 t dried oregano 1 t or T sugar 1/2 t salt 1 T cornmeal 1t cornstarch Use like the packets--mix with the browned meat, add 3/4 H2O and let bubble to whatever consistency you like. My...
  10. I went to Border's today to look for Annalise Roberts' book, but all they had was Betty Hagman's. (Incidentally, all their gluten-free cookbooks were not in the cookbook section, they were well-hidden in the ALLERGY section , and yes, I suggested to the staff that they change that). Are you allowed to post the recipes for the yellow cake and coconut...
  11. With doctors today, anything is possible. (Sorry, I have developed a deep mistrust of our medical system in general, so maybe I'm not a good one to reply here.) I do believe, though, that shingles seems to occur more often in celiacs than in the generally healthy population, maybe because our immune systems are hyper, I don't know. On the other hand...
  12. I was at Border's Bookstore today, reading through their (pitiful) selection of books about gluten intolerance and gluten-free cookbooks (which, by the way, are in the ALLERGY section ). One of the books (sorry, can't remember which one) listed ketchup and vanilla on their list of items with hidden gluten. I looked at my ketchup bottle when I got home...
  13. The wax paper thig worked like a charm. I do have to say, I still haven't found a gluten-free bread that I like as much as the gluten-free pancakes I make, so I may start using those for sandwiches--hey, why not?
  14. CONGRATULATIONS, JACKLYN!!!!!!! 1ST DAY gluten-free--WOO-HOOO!!!!!
  15. Drink as much as you can (water, juice, herbal tea, NOT ALCOHOL)--it'll help you excrete some of the toxic effects.
  16. Withdrawal for me was only 2 weeks. I ate a lot of dark chocolate chips and Fritos (they're allowed!), and drank a lot of herbal tea. No, I didn't eat the chocolate and the Fritos together. I find it fast and easy to make my own ranch dressing, and it is so much better than any of the botttled ones, it's not even funny. Add 1/2 cup mayonnaise to...
  17. First of all, welcome to the board! I hope you continue to improve. What you're describing (what I've highlighted) is shingles, when the chicken pox virus reactivates. In addition, it seems to be common in people whose immune system is not decreased, but rather disfunctional. Celiac disease is an example of a sidfunctional immune system. It is not an...
  18. Welcome Jacklyn! I also have very few obvious symptoms of being glutened, and I am overweight. When I stopped eating gluten, I lost 15 pounds without even trying (yay!). While I am not freaking out about cross-contamination, and I am not throwing out my toaster or anything else in my kitchen, I am concerned about potential problems down the line...
  19. Sorry, Molly! Be comforted--it's good, but not as good as fresh berries....
  20. Our friend , who has had lupus for several years, is having her 3rd abdominal surgery this year (2 because of adhesions, and this one is because of what they are caliling, "Lupus-induced peritonitits). I have no idea what the state of her villii is, or even if they have checked for celiac. They may have, because we have the same rheumatologist, who seemed...
  21. I like Kinnikinnick best, but theonly store that sells it isn't very close to me, and I don't have thte freezer space to order direct. But I had the same problem with it sticking in the freezer!
  22. Actually, I have heard from several vegetarian friends that they have gotten sick when they have eaten meat. They all report that they eventually "got used to it," and were then able to digest it, but that the first week or so, they were miserable. This, of course, is only second-hand info, as I have never been truly vegetarian. I'm sure there's someone...
  23. I am so sick of freezing bread, and then having to microwave it to unstick the pieces before I toast them, and by then it's cooked tasteless. Or if I don't freeze it, it dries out and crumbles away to nothing, or worse, grows lovely shades of mold. So today, I put little squares of wax paper between each slice before I put it in the freezer. I'm hoping...
  24. It also said that they were started on a bland diet. White bread toast has always been the basis of a bland diet...BRAT diet, too (Bananas, rice , applesauce, and toast).
