  1. I'm a big believer in leaving your cold alone. I have always gotten over colds faster when I HAVEN'T taken meds for them. Besides, we don't know long-term side effects of the meds, either. And your symptoms are a result of your body's fighting the germs--take the symptoms away, you've taken away your body's fight, too. Let your immune system do its job...
  2. Nini, what do you think the odds are that, had you NOT breastfed your daughter, she might have developed full-blown autism (and remember the high percentages of autistics who have gluten and casein intolerances)? I haven't done any research to see if anyone has studied breastfeeding and autism, but every mom that I've met who had a severely autistic child...
  3. I get them when I am very, very tired. I notice this with all three children, too.
  4. Maybe we're all mutants from another planet!
  5. Who knows--maybe it did. Maybe without your having nursed them, they would have been part of some other, more frightening statistic linked with celiac, such as twisted bowel, autism, or even SIDS.
  6. Our whole family LOVES "Fiddler!" Our oldest son was in a student production of it this year, so we all have it memorized! GREAT show!!!!! When they got to "sabbath Prayer," my 7-year-old nudged me and whispered, "Mommy, why don't WE sing that on Shabbat?"
  7. MAKE SURE YOU GET A NOTE FROM YOUR DOCTOR (or even student health service). AS A STUDENT, IT DOES NOT MATTER THAT YOU ARE RIGHT AND THE PROFESSOR IS WRONG--YOU NEED TO HAVE LEGAL GROUNDS HERE, AND THE THE DOCTOR'S NOTE WILL GIVE YOU JUST THAT. Trust me on this--my husband teaches at a college.
  8. Thanks, Laura! The research on breastfeeding/celiac is fascinating. I wonder why they are not analyzing breastmilk (especially from mothers of children with celiac) to see what's in it that makes the difference. They already know that mothers of premies produce a totally different milk than mothers of full-term babies (and the premie moms produce EXACTLY...
  9. If you get a note from your doctor that you need water and a small snack (to avoid dehydration, low blood sugar, etc.) and bring that NOT to your teacher but to someone way over his head--the department chair, the academic vice president, something like that), then your psycho teacher will HAVE to let you! (I'm assuming this is a college teacher--if it's...
  10. Hi, Jaimek, thanks for posting the info. I totally agree with the breastfeeding thing (though obviously it's not a guarantee)--but I do question his advice on starting gluten no later than 9 months. Other potential allergens like citrus and strawberries are held off until at least a year (and families with history of food allergies are told to wait even...
  11. Thanks--I'll try some today! (Must be vicious trees in your neighborhood...)
  12. My first was also 3 weeks early, very tiny, and constipated on formula. I had been on magnesium sulfate for preeclampsia--and magnesium sulfate inhibits milk production. I spent 5 days pumping round the clock every 3 hours before I got a drop of colostrum, and yes, I was told that I simply couldn't feed my baby. But as soon as I was able to pump an ounce...
  13. Thanks, Lil! My biopsy was in January, but it still looks like 2 huge, red bug-bites--they even itch like bug bites. Do you think it's too late for vitamin E to be effective for me?
  14. Hi, Superbeck, Hang in there~ And breathe! You've got a bunch of different problems going on, and you're frantically trying to solve them all instantaneously! One is the medical issues facing your girls. One is your own medical problems. One is your husband's obvious need to deny problems. And one is the way you and your husband relate on this...
  15. Try drinking a cup of herbal tea at the beginning of every meal, and in between every meal. That will help you cut down on the amount you're filling your stomach with). Also, as someone suggested above, be REALLY careful about the gluten-free breads and pastas--they are way heavier and more fattening than their gluten-filled counterparts.
  16. My kids didn't seem to have any trouble with oats, but I didn't think oats had a heck of a lot of nutrition (I wasn't worried about filling them up, I was worried about making every calorie have nutritive value). I gave them avocado, grilled salmon (very easy for baby to eat if you flake it in tiny pieces), hummous, and tofu. Check out some of the threads...
  17. My kids did really well on baby oatmeal, but I mixed it with breast milk--could that make a difference? Interestingly enough, they didn't do well on rice cereal at first--stopped them up big time.
  18. Before going the surgery route, I would go to a chiropractor. One of my friends is an MD, and she went to a chiropractor when she had carpal tunnel syndrome. You should ask around to find a well-regarded chiropractor (don't just look in the phone bood)--unfortunately, in addition to some brillian chiropractors, there ARE a fair amount of quacks out there...
  19. Any possiblity you can start to exercise? I know how hard it is with low thyroid, you feel like you can't even walk out the door, but once you start, you'll feel SO much better! Can you start with a walk around the block, and try to do it every day? Make sure to swing your arms--apparently this releases endorphins, and it's good for circulation, too...
  20. I'm sorry, I'm totally ignorant about the neuropathy thing--I'm not even sure what it is. I might be able to help on the food thing, though. Except for beef and soy, most Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, etc.) cuisines have many, many dishes that have nothing to do with your list. Vietnamese recipes tend to call for fish sauce, which...
  21. This is weird--I could have sworn I answered this post! RICE CRUST 3 cups cooked, cooled rice, 1 cup shredded cheddar, 1 or 2 eggs Mix, pat out onto greased pan with well-greased hands, make a rim so that tomato sauce doesn't leak, bake 18 minutes at 375, top, and rebake or broil until cheese melts and bubbles. I like to add garlic and dried Italian...
  22. At 30 pounds overweight, and with rosy cheeks (too rosy--it's rosacea), nobody thought I was sick either. I didn't think I was sick until I had that horrible rash--my stomach issues were mild enough to be easily ignored. But when I dropped 10 pounds without even trying after going gluten-free-I definitely looked a lot healthier. About you and your...
  23. Is it a slow nipple that works for her? Does she have a very narrow esophagus, or something that limits the amount she can swallow at a time? Or maybe the other nipples aim the milk at her gag reflex spot? I'm just trying to think of anything, ANYTHING that might be helpful or give you new ideas, sorry if this is all stuff you've already thought of. Michael...
  24. I love Dvorak! Angie, I think we're the only ones who have classical CDs in the car! Do you play an instrument, or sing? I have Suzuki violin and cello C D s--they have lots of easy little Bach pieces for beginning violin and cello students. They're very pretty tunes, and the kids kind of absorb them without having to think about it, so when they go...
