  1. That's fascinating, DonnaD! I have ALWAYS shut one eye when reading--but I never connected it to gluten before. I did all sorts of eye exercises (for either strabismus or ambliyopia, depending on which doctor you believed) as a child, but they never worked. Come to think of it, I haven't had time to read much lately--I'll have to check it out now that I...
  2. I'm so sorry it's been so horrible for you! Could you start by walks around the block, sort of doing laps, so you could duck into your house and change if you need to? We have a local park with Royal Flushes (portapotties) located about every mile. Does your area have anything similar? --if you were to tuck an extra Depends and a baggie of baby...
  3. Wow, you've really been on an emotional roller coaster! Give yourself a little room to breathe here. Here's a question: What would you tell your best friend if she were in the same situation? Can you be as nice to yourself as you would be to your best friend? What are your options, bowel-and-bladder-wise? Are Depends a temporary option? I say...
  4. You may well have gotten pinkeye from your makeup--it's definitely a haven for bacteria! You might want to replace all makeup and makeup tools that go anywhere near your eyes at this point....
  5. Can't say I blame you--pretty much tastes like sawdust, doesn't it?
  6. You've got the rest of his life for that--and maybe the standard and method of diagnosis will change in the next few years. But when development is lost because of eating gluten--that makes me really nervous. I wouldn't want to play "what-if," wondering if he would have done better had I not reintroduced something that poisoned him. I'd at least wait...
  7. OOOHH, be careful with that! It COULD hurt. You will likely cause 2 different, serious problems. Problem #1: Just because an infection is bacterial does NOT mean you need an antibiotic! That's just what the pharmaceutical industry wants you to think. What actually ends up happening when you always use antibiotics to clear up small infections is that...
  8. I had always thought that pinkeye needed antibiotics, but last time I got it, my doctor said no, it's viral, not bacterial (just like the ear infections we've been antibiotic-ing our children for all these years!). He told me to put warm wet washcloths on it (increases blood flow to the area to speed healing), rinse crusty crud as necessary, and that I should...
  9. Everyone probably thinks I'm nuts, as I suggest this a lot, but do you know any nursing moms who might be able to donate some breast-milk? It's high in calories, long-chain fatty acids (DHA and RHA), secretory IgA, is easily digestible, and goes directly to brain and bone growth before fat cell growth. And I've read that nobody is ever allergic to it, though...
  10. My middle son has eczema and speech problems, too! His eczema totally disappeared when we went "gluten-lite," but I never thought to connect the speech with gluten! He has trouble with t-combinations, ch-combinations and s-combinations, and he's 7 1/2. Do you mind if I ask what speech difficulties your little guy had?
  11. Yes, a day without gluten can make a huge difference--try it and see if it works for you! Also, someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but buckwheat is not the same as wheat, and does not contain gluten. Whatever waffles you had may have also contained wheat or wheat starch, but maybe it wasn't as much gluten as the bread in your sandwich. Either way...
  12. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that !@#$% Doctor Ego. Sounds like he's already doing you harm just by talking to you--can't possibly be good for your blood pressure! So much for the Hippocratic (Hypocritical?) Oath. Cleveland is only 2 1/2 hours from Pittsburgh. Someone I know raves about Allegheny General Hospital's celiac clinic. I haven't been...
  13. I hate to suggest this because of the expense, but it might be worthwhile to switch to organic milk and yogurt. All the things breastfeeding moms are told not to do (nurse while on antibiotics, eat foods with high levels of pesticides, etc), our dairy industry does for us, adding recombinant bovine growth hormone. One of my friends told me that, when her...
  14. Oh, is that funny--I forgot that this board automatically abbreviates Initial-C Initial-D as celiac disease!
  15. TCA has had some interesting issues--try looking her up on this board. Her baby daughter has had a lot of heart issues (surgery twice, I think)as well as gluten problems--she had to fight the big important doctors, too, but she convinced 'em! Come to think of it, I haven't seen her post in a while--I hope everything is okay.
  16. I made it tonight! It was INSANELY good! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! The only changes I made were to use bottled minced garlic in the cream sauce and instead of salt, I used parmesan cheese (hee hee). YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUMYUMYUMYUMYUM
  17. Sorry, Kristy, the tangent was my fault! Yes, it sounds familiar--when Michael had green foamy diarrhea when starting milk, one pediatrician said it didn't matter. But when we switched to soy milk, he had perfect poops again, so I never went back to that pediatrician. The pediatrician we like shrugged off my kids' occasional stomach-aches, and...
  18. ONE cup of coffee is enough to give me diarrhea, gas, and cramps!
  19. Sounds like you already have the answer--he has changed poops and changed behavior on gluten. Whether it's celiac or some other kind of wheat or gluten issue is unclear, but rather beside the point. It sounds like you have fantastic instincts and much better powers of observation than your doctor. With your background, you may have even staved off some...
  20. I've had 2 upper endoscopies without anesthesia (except for a topical spray for my throat). It's not pleasant, but it's not painful, and it's actually really cool to see your esophagus and stomach on the TV monitor. It's also quite fast--5-10 minutes tops. Be sure they spray your throat really well, as that really helps deaden the gag reflex. They sprayed...
  21. Hi, Kristy, Oh, good, it sounds like you're really on top of things! Most parents (and even pediatricians) probably wouldn't have known to get an eval. My first son was 4 1/2 pounds (37-weeks) and his pediatrician (whom we otherwise adore) missed a lot of red flags, such as not being able to point or follow someone else's pointing--our son's high verbal...
  22. Hi, Wonkbar, welcome to the forum! How is your son's ability to communicate verbally? Can he ask and answer simple questions? Can he tell you when his tummy is hurting? Does he ever ask "why" questions (such as, "Mommy, why do I feel so yucky?")? If you point at something across the room, can he follow that with his eyes and spy what you are pointing...
  23. Whoops, sorry, I misunderstood the ad!
  24. Hi, Ellen, welcome aboard! My hair falls out when I get it colored, too. I finally decided that healthy gray hair looks a heck of a lot better than half-bald, half-dyed (and you can ALWAYS tell that dyed hair is dyed, the colors just aren't quite right), so I am pretending that my gray hairs are highlights. The positive side is that I'm saving a small...
  25. If you crush potato chips (gluten-free, of course), corn chips, or tortilla chips, those work very well as a shake-n-bake-type coating. You can crunch a bunch in your food processor, and then keep in the freezer, or, if you're short on time and want to make a one-use batch, put some in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin (kids love to do that part...
