  1. Your arms, you say????!! THAT'S WHAT I'VE GOT, TOO!!!!!!! And the idiot dermatologist did a biopsy--which came back negative, as my GP had had me on prednisone for 10 days. That was in January, and it's just come back, again on my arms. Do you have round, pink patches, about 2-3 inches across, and the same number on each arm? They're hot to the touch...
  2. SOUNDS WONDERFUL! yOU'RE MAKING ME HUNGRY...
  3. I learned to put 2 or 3 big, thick towels on top of the sheets before they got in bed. My aim must not be as good as yours, Karen, because even sleeping with them, I couldn't catch ALL of it with the barf bowl! But having the towels helped--I would just take off a towel and throw it into the washing machine--no need to change the entire bed (usually.....
  4. Can you use Vietnamese rice paper wrappers (for spring rolls) instead of the flour-and-water pastry dough?
  5. Popsicles are great! So is crushed ice with a little apple juice (lots of crushed ice and a SMALL amount of apple juice, otherwise it's a recipe for diarrhea). Our ped says to water the Gatorade so it's half water, half Gatorade-otherwise it's too sugar-heavy. My kids like the blue flavors for some reason--they say the rest taste awful. (I think they all...
  6. You might also want to check for polycystic ovarian syndrome. About the pregnancy bloat--mine disappeared when I went off gluten--BUT, when I started adding in gluten-free breads, pastas, and pancakes, it came right back! I don't know if it was the yeast, or if my body was so fooled by the products that it reacted anyway! Either way, though, I decided...
  7. Gluten Free Pantry has a really yummy one, but there was a thread while back where a couple of people posted their own recipes for pancake mix--that would probably be a heckuva lot cheaper.
  8. They're not saying that their products with whey are dairy-free, they're saying that the three that contain whey are casein-free. All their other spreads are dairy-free (contain neither casein nor whey).
  9. Okay, I found this on the Internet (I googled, "casein, whey, and allergies"): "There are many protein allergens in cow's milk that cause allergic reactions. Casein and whey are the two main components. The curd that forms when milk is left to sour, is called casein. The watery part which is left after the curd is removed, is called whey." So, whey...
  10. I'm assuming that she means that whey does not contain casein--is that possible?
  11. I suppose it's possible to remove the casein (the protein) and still have something left to use in a spread that would allow you to say it had "real" dairy ingredients. If it's dairy-free, it MUST be casein-free, but it's possible to be casein-free and not dairy-free. Fleishmann's makes a very decent dairy-free margarine--look for it in Kosher grocery...
  12. I'm so sorry to hear all the trouble you're having. I have no experience with Neocate, but there are so many moms with celiac who breastfeed, I wonder if one might be able to pump some milk for your daughter (and if the mom has celiac, you'd know that the milk would be gluten-free, right?). There are a few mother's-milk banks in this country--5, last...
  13. I would love to read it--thank you so much for introducing this! Interesting about bananas--my oldest had so many difficulties as an infant and started as a 4 1/2 pounder with heart problems. The doctors kept worrying about his weight gain, and tried (unsuccessfully) to push commercial formula instead of breast-feeding so that they could monitor his...
  14. I'm so glad to hear that someone else feels like gluten-free stuff "just sits in your stomach!" I liked all the gluten-free breads and cakes that I tried--but that's exactly how they felt afterwards! I actually feel better stomachwise if I just make things that wouldn't have called for gluten anyway (like Asian food). Even something with a little soy sauce...
  15. Exercise is supposed to be a big help in helping to manage diabetes--is that an option for you? Did the doctor happen to mention if you are "borderline" or fairly severe? You've had such a tough week--I hope things improve!
  16. That looks fantastic--like the famous apple pancake served by The Original Pancake House! Thanks so much--you've made my day!
  17. Oh. My. Gosh. I never connected my airsickness with celiac either, which is totally idiotic of me as I learned through trial and error to eat low-carb and low acid (no OJ or tomato sauce) on all trips! Sheesh....
  18. Oh, well. At least, enjoy the extra time you get not having to put on make-up, and how nice it feels to be able to wash your face whenever you want! Who says eyelashes have to be dark, anyway? In another 50 years, the fashion trends will swing the other direction, and we'll all be dying our eyelashes blonde!
  19. I'm so sorry--my thoughts and prayers are with you. I hope things improve.
  20. Feeling better yet, ChelsE?
  21. If they use a commercially prepared beef or vegetable "base" (it comes as a condensed paste) for the broth, it might be thickened with wheat starch. If they make their own broth, it should be okay.
  22. I believe the question at hand is the safety of birth control pills. There are other aspects of safety besides whether or not they contain gluten. Since so many of us have or will probably develop many immune system problems, then the safety of playing around with your hormones is most certainly relevant. I was not talking about moral or religious opinions...
  23. Sorry, I have no idea if it's gluten-free or not, but as far as general safety, I can tell you this: my husband is a PhD chemist, and when we first met, he told me there was no way he'd want me taking birth control pills--he didn't think it could possibly be healthy to mess around with one's body chemistry like that. He said if there were a birth control...
  24. I've always loved any kind of cherry-flavored hard candy (cough drop or not), but what is probably more effective (though not as tasty) is to do hot salt water gargles (I kid you not, they're amazingly effective) and drink as much as you possibly can. I know, I know, it'll mean that you'll have to pee almost constantly, but, like I tell my kids, you'll be...
