  1. Are green peas legumes? (Sorry if that's a dumb question--I made them for dinner tonight, and my tummy's all bloated and crampy and I KNOW there was no gluten anywhere in sight! I never thought of eliminating legumes. Green tea? I didn't know that one, either--I've been drinking a cup a day sinced September (and I'd hardly ever drunk any caffeine...
  2. Hang in there, Lynne! You don't know me, but here are some hugs and prayers anyway! Fiddle-Faddle
  3. I haven't any clear idea, so I'm just guessing off the top of my head, and I'm probably way off, but could it be fabric softener on your sheets, or feathers in your pillows? Or mold/mildew issues in your house? Allergies are queer things, and , despite what the know-it-all doctors like to think, allergies don't always show up the way the doctors expect...
  4. Hey, my oldest had open-heart surgery at 2 years old! I also had to battle docs about nursing--he was only 4 1/2 pounds at birth, and at 6 weeks old, they found the first of what turned out to be 2 VSDs (ventricular septal defect--basically, a hole in the heart). Luckily, our cardiologist was quite sensible. He did tell me that they advised bottles so...
  5. Is Tofu fermented? And soy millk? I have a Chinese friend (born in China) who makes her own soy milk from dried soybeans. She makes a lot of soy-based foods, all Chinese. I'm especially interested in the Asian aspect, as my husband is of Japanese ancestry (he's third generation Japanese-American). He grew up eating Japanese dinners every night, and...
  6. We have only eaten out once recently, and it was at Outback. We had a great experience! I've noticed a direct correlation in our family with how often we get sick and when we have eaten at a restaurant or eaten prepared food. I first figured this out last year, when I started cooking from scratch much more often, and figured that I could make most...
  7. It certainly would be better than using a gluten-containing formula, but nothing close to the different kinds of protection breastmilk would give. There are over 100 substances in breastmillk not found in ANY formula, including white blood cells and secretory IgA, which help the baby to develop a healthy immune system (which for us on this forum, is SO important...
  8. Hi, Skokimom, What if you put regular brown rice flour in the food processor (with a little cornstarch, maybe?) One of my cookbooks says to do that to make powdered sugar out of regular granulated sugar.
  9. Is MSG a derivative of wheat, or does it contain gluten? Holy cow, I didn't know it was on the Do Not Eat list. For bacon, I try to get the preservative-free one (sorry, I can't remember the brand). Mamaw, which Bob Evans did you go to? McKnight Road? I'll try to go to the same one sometime, and order gluten-free! Maybe if enough of us go there, they...
  10. If you're planning to breastfeed, that's wonderful! Best for you, best for baby--in every way! The best advice I ever got was when my sister-in-law told me to ask for the lactation consultant (they have them at every hospital) BEFORE there was a problem. Keep in mind that the doctors (pediatricians AND ObGYNs) usually know next to nothing about breastfeeding...
  11. Gee, I guess I'm in this category, too! My IgG was very high, but my IgA was normal. I asked for the bloodwork because I thought my horrible rash looked like the pictures of Dermatitis Herpetiformus that I saw on the Internet, which was also the reason I stopped eating gluten. Within 2 weeks of eliminating gluten, I lost 10 pounds and realized that...
  12. Oh, be careful!!! Edy's light French Silk (my favorite ) contains "natural flavoring derived from wheat!!!!!!!"
  13. It may be total coincidence, but my DH-like rash (it was never officially diagnosed as DH) occurred right after consuming 4 of those green health-drinks within one week's time (and I'd never tried them before that one week). Before that, I had never had any obvious signs of Celiac. I liked them, too. But I'm afraid to ever try them again.
  14. Hey, this may be old news for you experienced ones out there, but I just called Campbell's and they say that their Campbell's Select Gold Label Soups are gluten-free except for the Creamy Portabella one. Wheeee!
  15. Heck, if you put'em all into a book, I'd be willing to BUY it! And I bet lots of others would, too. I gotta go find white rice flour!
  16. I dragged a water bottle and fresh fruit everywhere with me when I was pregnant. I had ketones in my urine, too (I had major problems with nausea and vomiting through the whole of all three pregnancies). For some reason, strawberries were practically the only thing I wanted. I don't know if that would help you, especially if there's a glucose problem,...
  17. Jnkmnky, do you mind if I ask what kinds of lunches you pack, and what dinners your kids like? I'm starting to run out of ideas....Thanks!
  18. Ursula, I hope I haven't offended you. If I did, I do apologize.
  19. Fascinating about the sulfur. Never heard about that before. Yikes! I think most people with reflux do react badly to tomatoes and wine (also citrus and pineapple) as they are so very acidic. I wonder what their sulfur content is?
  20. A recently diagnosed (officially) celiac friend of mine likes a group at Allegheny General Hospital. I can't find their name right now--I just called my friend and asked her to email it. I'll post it as soon as she does. In the meantime, you could try the general info # at AGH--I think it's (412) 359-3131--annd ask for the celiac clinic. It's not called...
  21. Oh, I'm sorry, Ursula, I misunderstood. It must be terribly frustrating for you. Please make sure that you are able to get a little bit of fresh air (even if there's no sunshine yet!) and exercise--that helped me tremendously when I had post-partum depression (a different source of depression, I know). The hardest part was getting started--I was convinced...
  22. Michael, are there any support groups for any of your disabilities and illnesses near where you live (or even in cyberspace) ? The reason I ask this is, I thought maybe one might have members who can tell you how to get the support you need--maybe they've already been through the same thing and can help you navigate what sounds like a horrible system.
  23. Ursula, my first thought is: considering that 5 members of your family have AS (whether or not they realize it), they are pretty lousy at translating "appropriate" behavior for you! I would have expected them to be somewhat rigid in their thoughts, sure, but if they think they're so great at "appropriate " behaviour, you'd think they'd be able to explain...
  24. Wow, that's a tough one to answer. My husband and I got measles-only vaccines for our boys when they started kindergarten. Our oldest had an MMR at 15 months (before we know there was a possible problem), and our school district requires another MMR upon starting school. (By the way, you don't HAVE to get the vaccines, even though the media says you do...
