  1. I don't get the shots. I take sublingual B12 in the form of methylcobalamin. I wonder if it's possible that you are reacting to something in the shot--what is in the shot besides for B12? As far as having another autoimmune disease, B2 deficiency is very common amongst celiacs due to absorption problems before going on the gluten-free diet, and after...
  2. oh. I hope the OP is okay, wherever he or she is....
  3. For what it's worth, I had a friend who died from indolent B-cell lymphoma, with an intestinal tumor. Well, technically, he died from MRSA, acquired during a hospitalization for pneumonia, brought on by a virus he caught while on major steroids after a stem cell transplant. When I first learned about celiac, I asked him if his oncologist would consider...
  4. Every one of the autoimmune issues named above has been closely linked with celiac disease, and in many cases, a causal relationship has been proven. That isn't a peer-reviewed study above, but an article by a medical writer, who seems completely unaware of the relationship (explained in many places here on celiac.com) between celiac disease and autoimmune...
  5. There are no Wegman's in Pittsburgh , but the Giant Eagle supermarkets are quite good for Gluten-free. In addition, there is an entire HUGE store devoted to food allergies at Soergel's Farm Market in Wexford, as well as a Whole Foods competitor called "Right By Nature" in the Strip district (at 24th and Smallman). Good Luck!
  6. Glamour, the author of that article didn't mention ruling out celiac disease/gluten intolerance, or wheat allergy, either, for that matter. Since celiac disease has been shown to disrupt menstrual cycles, it could certainly be a factor in this "autoimmune progesterone dermatitis." It could even be the cause. Many of us here on this board have had a variety...
  7. All I can add is that I hope that your counselor is as perceptive as Tiffany! Note to Tiffany--have you ever thought of being a counselor????? You're AMAZING! Perhaps we could have a "Dear Tiffany" section???
  8. I second angle's suggestion above. I also wanted to suggest that you read Lisa Lewis's Special Diets For Special Kids. This is a book by the parent of an autistic child, and I think you'd gain even more understanding of the whole gluten-casein-autism connection, as well as recipe ideas (there are a ton of very good recipes), support possibilities, and...
  9. Both the symptoms of restless leg syndrome and low iron may be linked with B12 deficiency (also called "pernicious anemia"). Celiacs are at increased risk of developing B12 deficiency due to malabsorption and we also have a very high rate of using acid blockers, which can cause B12 deficiency (you NEED acid to properly absorb B12). According to the B...
  10. One more thing to consider is B12 deficiency--dizziness is at the top of the list of symptoms.
  11. Thank you so much for researching and posting this! The only trouble I foresee is unfortunately a big one: Quaker probably knows that under the proposed labeling laws, they can label their product "gluten-free" even if it contains up to 20 ppm gluten. But currently, no legal definition seems to exist for "gluten-free." At this point, all "gluten-free...
  12. My understanding is that, in the "Dream" line of milk substitutes, only Rice Dream is processed with barley enzymes, and that Almond Dream is safe. They also have "Hemp Dream," which is surprisingly delicious (and I can have dairy!), and it, too, is processed without the barley enzymes.
  13. It's also possible that it's something besides for gluten. He may have been exposed to the chicken pox, for example (my son, who DID receive the chicken pox vaccine, started his with itchy bumps on his back that did not respond to Benadryl).
  14. Many people with rheumatoid arthritis react not only to gluten but to dairy: Open Original Shared Link In addition, many celiacs find that their intestines do not heal until they stop consuming dairy as well as gluten. Apparently, the casein (the protein in dairy products) irritate the damaged villi (which are supposed to produce lactase, the enzyme that...
  15. Whoops, forgot to reply about my own experience. Our son reacted badly to cow's milk when we first tried it when he was a year old, (I breastfed, so except for the first week when I had no milk, he had no formula). We gave him soy milk for a year, and then gradually mixed it with cow's milk, and then he seemed to have no problems. We pulled our son...
  16. One of the best resources I have found is Special Diets for Special Kids by Lisa Lewis. It is both a gluten-free, casein-free cookbook and also a telling of her quest to find the source of her autistic son's symptoms. Casein is often a problem for ASD kids as well, but the author recommends omitting one at time instead of both at once. Although it is...
  17. I have a Ms. Bento, which I love. Open Original Shared Link It doesn't leak, keeps hot food hot, is easy to clean, has different compartments (you can separate pasta and sauce til serving time, or even put cold foods like shredded cheese or carrot sticks in one of the compartments), and comes with its own carry bag! There is also a larger, more masculine...
  18. I just wish there were a caffeine-free version--I love the flavor, but can't deal with the caffeine. We don't drink much soda at our house--does anyone know of sodas that AREN'T gluten-free? I'd never thought to look.
  19. Thanks, Ravenwoodglass, I did forget to mention the rebound effect, which makes you think that you NEED the acid blocker! You try to quit cold turkey, and BAM! you end up with more acid reflux than you've had in your life! Most people need to wean off slowly. Raven'smum, can you get copies of the bloodwork results ? That way you can check to see...
  20. Please be aware that long-term use of Prilosec and other acid-blockers is a leading cause of B12 deficiency, as you NEED acid to properly absorb the B1 in your multivitamin. Celiacs are already at risk for B12 deficiency due to malabsorption. If you or your child continues on Prilosec or Omeprazole for more than a couple of weeks, you should take a sublingual...
  21. This looks wonderful! Thank you for posting this--I've really missed Taboulleh! I've been using quinoa flakes in couscous recipes, with great results--have you tried that?
  22. WOW???? Can your son ask this doctor for a list of other doctors he might know around the country who have either as much sense or the same training??? We need more doctors like this!!! A thought about the profuse sweating--that is often a symptom of overactive thyroid. I wonder if they will eventually figure out a causative link between neuro celiac...
  23. I posted that link because where I live, the media is classifying the nasal mist as a vaccine, and they use the words "shot" and "vaccine" interchangeably, as do many people. There have been many announcements here on radio and television about where to go for a swine flu "shot," and they often add a sentence or two about the "mist" being thimerosal-free...
  24. If this pain occurs more-or-less monthly, it might be a corpus luteum cyst, an ovarian cyst, or even a fibroid (at least, if you are female). I agree that it should be checked out by a competent doctor. Usually, they will not operate on an appendix unless there is clear indication of infection. They will most likely order ultrasounds, both external and...
  25. There is now a lawsuit seeking to halt the US Swine Flu vaccination campaign: Open Original Shared Link The complaint filed Thursday argued that far from preventing a massive outbreak of swine flu, the "live attenuated influenza virus nasal mist vaccine could trigger" an H1N1 pandemic. If you have received a live-virus nasal spray vaccine, you may be...
