  1. My family agrees that the cakes and cookies I make from this book are the best I've ever made, gluten or gluten-free! I agree about the rice flour, but simply can't afford it. I use 1/2 Bob's Red Mill brown rice flour and 1/2 finely ground white rice flour from the Asian grocery (69 cents a pound) instead of the finely ground brown rice flour, and things...
  2. One other thing comes to mind, and that is appendicitis. In the last 6 months, I've run into more and more people--all women--who have had emergency appendectomies. One of my friends was told for over a week that NOTHING WAS WRONG--and then her appendix actually burst, and they finally figured it out. I don't know why appendicitis is suddenly...
  3. I totally agree with you. Horses are beautiful animals, and caring for and interacting with them is a wonderful thing. I've even read about their being used as therapy. I've just learned through sad experience that the risks are far more than what I used to believe. When my first friend was killed, I assumed it was a fluke. When my second had her...
  4. Malt is nearly always from barley. Barley is a gluten-containing grain. Companies are NOT required to include barley on the "potential allergens" list at the end of the ingredients, which is ridiculous. I have seen "rice malt" listed occasionally, but don't know anything about that. Anybody heard of it?
  5. I have a different take on the horse thing. One of my friends from high school was a competitive rider. She died in a freak accident where the horse threw her over a jump, then jumped over and landed on her head. My best friend as an adult used to be an ER doc. She and I started horseback riding lessons together, which was lots of fun. She had always...
  6. Same reaason they put breadcrumbs into tuna salad--it stretches it cheaply. Oats are cheaper than meat. Bread crumbs are cheaper than tuna. The bottom line is $$$.
  7. Thank you!! (drool drool)
  8. I have heard great things about the pain pumps. My own post-surgical (outpatient surgery) experience was with endocet (generic Percoset), and it put me in the hospital. I did a totally non-scientific, casual little poll of everyone I met who had taken it, and 21 out of the 26 people that I talked to had had bad to very bad to disastrous experiences...
  9. Hi, kalikohl! Lucky you, South Hills! I take my kids to Suzuki lessons/classes at Pittsburgh Music Academy, which is in Carnegie. I meet a lot of Mt. Lebanonites there. The only drawback is dealing with those dang tunnels... There's a good health food store on Banksville (the name is totally escaping me), right next to Kuhn's Grocery, and I...
  10. Hi, I'm not trying to cause panic here, but I did find this: "Generally, ovarian cancer does not cause many early signs until the cancer grows. Women should consult their physician if they experience pressure or fullness in the pelvis, abdominal bloating, or changes in bowel and bladder patterns that continue and/or worsen." That was from the Johns...
  11. I wish I knew how to help. How did they rule out any reasons for you to be in pain? What diagnostic tests did they run? Did they do an ultrasound of your lower abdomen? Would that have ruled out endometriosis? Are you ovulating right now? (Is it about 10-14 days since the first day of your last period?) I 'm so sorry you've been in such pain...
  12. I use Annaliese Roberts' mixes, and she has one for breads and a different, lighter mix for cakes and cookies. Cakes and cookies: 6 parts extra finely-ground brown rice flour 2 parts potato starch 1 part tapioca starch Breads: 2 parts millet flour 1 part sorghum flour 1 part cornstarch 1 part potato starch 1 part tapioca starch She uses...
  13. Woo-hoo--we're neighbors! Odd to hear a doctor say to walk away from anyone who is 100% sure of themselves--usually doctors are the ones who are so sure of themselves, at least when writing prescriptions! PM me if you have any questions about local stuff (except I don't know much about the local doctors, unfortunately).
  14. Except they're too dry and crumbly to make a decent brick!!! However,if you mix it with water and let it dry, it might make good cement...
  15. Hi,gffamily! I have heard that the celiac clinic at AGH (Allegheny General Hospital) is good, but I have never been there. I'm kinda doing the gluten-free thing on my own, as the doctor who ordered my bloodwork (a dermatologist) was an idiot and told me that it's perfectly normal to have an IgG of 64 when the base range is 0-16. I am able to recommend...
  16. I'm definitely gonna freeze the blue thing--my kids like rolled up ham-and-cheese--but I'm either going to put the blue thing in a zipper bag, or the ham-and-cheese-roll-ups in a zipper bag. Or maybe both (which kinda defeats the purpose of getting non-disposable containers, doesn't it? ).
  17. Okay, I'm shocked at your in-laws, and sorry about the rough time you had to go through, but what hits me is, DANG, GIRL-- YOU ARE A GREAT WRITER!!!!! You should send this to a magazine and see if they print it.
  18. I bought 4 of the Target Pseudo-Bento Boxes ("Sorta-Bentos??"), and they are great! They even come with their own skinny freezer-pak blue-ice thingie! Only thing is, I think I'll have to bag or wrap the sandwich anyway, as I can't see how the blue-ice thingie wouldn't leak condensation all over the sandwich. However, I'm thrilled to find out that the...
  19. YAY!!!! GFP's BACK!!!!!!! The board has totally NOT been the same without you. I'm so glad you're back!!!!!
  20. Brilliant idea! I don't want to screw up the poll, either. I am including my husband and children, as I think they all have some degree of gluten intolerance (I am assuming that my husband's addiction to gluten and resultant diarrhea when he eats lots of it is a sign of intolerance--but maybe I'm wrong there?). I also marked that I have no lasting damage...
  21. I just wanted to say, I hope you are having a great time in Germany! And I hope you come home to a great time, too.
  22. Is it possible to take Nexium and not have problems if you are celiac/gluten intolerant? I have been able to cut my Nexium dose in half since going off gluten, but can't seem to get off it entirely. I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia about 20 years ago, and Nexium does seem to work better for me than anything else. But I hate to think that I might be...
  23. If you are on prednisone, though, that will screw up the results of the biopsy. I'm glad it looks like things are improving for you. And yes, reflux can definitely have something to do with gluten, as do thyroid disease, joint pain, diabetes, and a whole host of other nasty autoimmune problems. What you have sounds exactly like what I call my DH-type rash...
