  1. We hear you...it's hard to feel positive when you really don't feel positive at all. Your friends and family should be considerate of your feelings, however not the point of eliminating gluten from their diet if you guys are out to eat together BUT having said that they should choose restaurants which you can eat at. My mother in law never really...
  2. I am from NJ, but I do not know anything about that area....sorry I cannot be of help. Where are you living now? NJ has Wegman's stores and Whole Foods; some Trader Joe's here and there.
  3. You'll get responses from people with celiac who have had gallbladder problems, I know they exist because I've posted with them on this same board last summer/fall and from what I can recall, their stories aren't much different from mine........it'll just take some more time before you hear from them. Be well. D.
  4. I had been looking for this info and finally found it. The Summer 2003 edition of Lifeline (put out by Celiac Sprue Association USA Inc.) Article written by John Himberger, Capt. U.S. Air Force (NC) Capt. Himberger explains that "rapid deployment requires prepackaged foods Many assignments are isolated and far from medical facilities" (or fresh...
  5. for Life Insurance; try MetLife...you might not get Preferred Rates, but if you are a controlled celiac you may get the Standard Rates. Husband took out a life insurance policy with MetLife a couple of years ago and we ran into this. He isn't officially diagnosed as celiac, but the questions on the form do make you have to write down info about doctor...
  6. Dear Birdy: I was 50 when I had my surgery last year. I do not have celiac but had my gallbladder out last Aug 07 I had enlarged gallbladder (disease - not stones) and was in pain; then the dull pain became more often and it was tender near my right ribcage. Fatty foods made me feel worse. As my gallbladder got worse, my diarrhea got worse...
  7. This has been my husband's experience as well. His guy friends almost immediately dumped him when he could no longer go out to the bars with them. They had no compassion nor empathy. Doctors told him he needed psych care and dispensed anti-depressants which did help but caused "total, all over the body uncontrolable shaking" so he could not take...
  8. It's easy to get cross contamination at salad bars
  9. I'll start: Never eat tuna salad, chicken salad, shrimp salad, turkey salad, etc. without first finding out if the salad as wheat bread crumbs incorporated in it. Some pre-made salads include wheat bread crumbs as a "filler" Some restaurants use pre-made (not made on premises) Some restaurants make in on premises themselves and add wheat...
  10. Bill - Rest easy, I'm in corporate world and I understand diff. bet. private and non-profits. I only wish they'd open IPO - I'd invest I think this will be a good product as what they work on is not only for celiacs. I see food manufacturers using fact that there is now a "drug" perhaps then as an "excuse" to challenge the labeling...
  11. I would be concerned about wheat in paper if/when food outlets/manufacturers/packers start using it "around" gluten free foods...for example: those little squares of paper used to separate chicken cutlets when purchased in supermarket; or the paper under the beef roast used to absorb the excess beef blood in supermarket. Or if they start using this...
  12. The treatment is called Zonulin - in Clinical Trials right now see albatheraputics.com for the info.
  13. When I was a kid in the sixities my best friend's grandmother died of breast cancer and a relative had lung cancer. There was no "chemo" in those days either like there is today. Yes, it was a big deal as it was a certain death sentence. I also feel that before our current level of medications for heart disease and our current diagnositic equipment people...
  14. Sorry for the confusion, my "cure" in my post didn't refer to celiac.
  15. You make a very valid point.
  16. This is another "Wonder" doctor! This is what eating Wonder bread does to your brain!
  17. This article doesn't say anything more than we already know: Zonulin, a drug which is to be marketed to celiacs, is being developed by a Dr. who is very near and dear to the celiac cause. This is being done by a private (this is very important as it shows that the investors are using their own money to finance this) pharmaceutical company, Alba...
  18. Thanks for info...I have an "hourglass" figure also and pants "gap" at the back at the waist. It's so bad that you can gather about 4 inches of fabric. The jeans I have now are Lee brand from JC Penney and I never thought that they would add spandex elastic to them but they did. I see that LandsEnd has "custom" made ones....wow!
  19. Thanks for the reminder.....for the life of me I couldn't remember the name of LL Bean!
  20. I am unhappy to find that a lot of stuff today is made with spandex and/or lycra Tops, jeans, etc. I am of certain age that shouldn't be wearing close-fitting clothing and I have a little more weight on my bones than I should. I feel like manufacturers are no longer making 100% cotton jeans any longer..... Anyone else finding this to be a problem...
  21. I think those doctors have been eating "Wonder" bread!
  22. Puritan's Pride used to be gluten free (or said so on their label) but a few years ago we re-ordered and noticed that the "gluten free" was gone from the label. I phoned them and never got a satisfactory answer from them and had to stop purchasing their products. We then switched to Freeda vitamins (mail order pricey but reliably gluten free...
  23. One of the problems I am encountering (on sites such as Am a zon dot com ) is that they now require that you buy in "bulk". You have to purchase a "case" of whatever it is that you want. You can't just buy one or two. I can't do that. This is too much money at one time and too much product that will get stale before it all gets used and...
  24. While I agree that gas prices are high, I seem to recall that this happened during 1970's when gas prices were about half of a minimum wage hour..... I do not recall what min. wage is now but it seems to me that we are repeating the 1970's. My viewpoint is that wages are not keeping up with the economy. Overall wages for average USA Americans have...
  25. "Wonder" - as if it's another species of grain. Gluten free means you cannot eat these grains: wheat, oat, rye, barley and Wonder.
