ARCHIVED York Test Results
debmidge replied to judy05's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I called York about the test results and asked specifically why a food sensitvity would show up when it wasn't consumed in years. They told me that they test for antibodies for the food. If you don't consume that particular food, you won't have antibodies for it. I would presume that after not eating something for over 20 years you should not have... -
ARCHIVED The Celiac Conference At Columbia 4-2-05
debmidge replied to celiac3270's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
celiac3270, Thanks for taking the time to attend this conference. I have comments that could be made into questions. 1) will someone in medical field make it mandatory for doctors to screen children at a certain age for the anti bodies? 2) will someone in medical field convince GP's and gastros to test for celiac disease even if the doctor feels... -
ARCHIVED York Test Results
debmidge replied to judy05's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Why I feel that York is at least questionnable: 1) My husband was diagnosed IBS since 1977 has never eaten the following in all this time and York said he was sensitive to these foods: Nuts: Cashew, brazil, hazelnut, almond; Lentils (that's a laugh); chili pepper (that's even funnier); garlic. So based on the theory that if you avoid something for... -
ARCHIVED York Test Results
debmidge replied to judy05's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
don't take the test results as gospel. my husband got similar results and his gastro told him to take with big grain of salt; and quite possibly it could be bogus. go to Quackwatch.com for list of tests that are not considered reliable. This is one of them, as it appears on Quackwatch. -
gluten-free doc, nice to see you on board these days. Thanks for receipes. I misplaced mine from last year

ARCHIVED Celiac Was On The News This Morning!
debmidge replied to a topic in Publications & Publicity
As a lapsed Catholic and a bible reader (have read OT & NT cover to cover as I ended up in older years attending a bible-based church) the resolution of this gluten-free host will never come to frutition. The Catholic Church is slow and plodding when coming to the conclusion that others have reached. Example: Galileo was considered a heretic... -
ARCHIVED Lindt Truffles
debmidge replied to lilliexx's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I purchased them last year as party favors and I had to remind my husband not to eat them because there was something gluteny on the ingredients label (I just don't recall what it was...) So, I guess a re-check is in order by calling company. -
Is there a specialty of doctor other than gastro or GP which everyone goes to, that specializes in Celiac Disease only? A specialist who knows the digestive problems, neurological and osteo problems of a celiac? Like a one-stop doctor you can go to after you get your endoscopy.

ARCHIVED Stomach Burning
debmidge replied to Fonda's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Is a stomach scope the same as an endoscopy? Have they checked you for an ulcer in the small intestine, where villi are also inspected? -
ARCHIVED Question For Any Really Underweight Celiac's?
debmidge replied to ronapa's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi everyone My husband w/celiac disease lost 30 lbs upon first getting celiac but was misdiagosed for over 25 years. He was about 175 to start, lost the first 30 then slowly went down to 128 (he's 5' 10" tall and had a medium muscular build to start). Over the years he varied from 128 up to 155; finally his body gave out and he plunged back down to... -

ARCHIVED Refractory Coeliac Disease
debmidge replied to nikki-uk's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Nikki, Your husband's condition sounds like my husband's but just a notch worse. Unfortunately, I'm at the same point that you're at. I have a feeling that my husband too should eliminate dairy, but for him too that's the bulk of his calorie intake. He can't tolerate soy, vegetables and fruits nor spices and herbs or tomato based foods. Every meal... -
ARCHIVED Refractory Coeliac Disease
debmidge replied to nikki-uk's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Nikki What is your husband's weight in translation in American (I don't recall equivalent stones to pounds) and what is his height? His symptoms sounds like my husband's but without arthritis....I too don't know what else to do for him...my husband has been sick since 1977 but diagnosed with celiac disease in 2003 (went all those years misdiagnosed... -
ARCHIVED Having Problems Getting Test Results From York Lab
debmidge replied to Jeepster's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I found York customer service to be very good, our test results took very long too, but we eventually received them. We did it during the end of the Summer and the Florida hurricanes held it up. York accepts emails, so if you want to contact them that way, they'll respond. I've had questions after the test and contacted them via email and they got... -
ARCHIVED Condensed Soup And Bread Crumbs
debmidge replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
don't know about condensed soups, but avoid Gillian's bread crumbs due to weird taste....like Hol-Grain brand (rice based) bread crumbs....I just purchased Corn Flake Bread crumbs gluten-free made by Soy Nut Butter Company, at the health food store. Didn't try the corn flake ones yet. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Seizures
debmidge posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The CSA states that gluten seizures are a symptom of celiac disease. What is a gluten seizures? Is this like an epilpetic seizure? Does the incidence of them fade as the celiac remains gluten-free? Or can you get one even after you've been gluten-free for a year? Any info would be appreciated. -

ARCHIVED Article: Westport Student Files Lawsuit
debmidge replied to angel-jd1's topic in Publications & Publicity
So the 504 is basically a "safety-net" for both the teacher/school board and the student/parents which allows the affected child to have a more normal school life despite his/her affliction. With the 504 everyone now knows the parameters and what is expected out of them. I can't see how this can be a bad thing. As to this particular situation, I think... -

ARCHIVED York Food Allergy Tests
debmidge replied to lindasheppard's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have a different take on the York testing. My husband is celiac & we did the full test and it came back that he was highly sensitive to soy, yeast, almond, milk, egg yolk, certain nuts like hazelnut, cashew, lentils, chili pepper and mildly sensitive to other items such as garlic & brazil nuts. We showed the report to his gastro, who is the... -
ARCHIVED Is There Such Thing As A Gf Marshmallow?
debmidge replied to 2new2celiacs's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just got a thought... would it help if before the gluten-free rice crispies are made into marshmallow bars, they are lightly toasted in the oven to make them more crispy for the receipe? -
ARCHIVED The One Symptom That Won't Go Away
debmidge replied to lilliexx's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Melzie, If I understood you correctly, you are drinking beer but avoiding gluten. Beer=gluten (unless you are drinking the special gluten-free beer). RE: Cheese consumption. I've been lactose intolerant (severely) for over 20 years and cannot digest soft, moist or creamy cheeses -- like Ricotta or cottage or some muenster unless I eat a Lactaid...
