  1. :o I am new to this and don't quite find a board where I can introduce myself to everyone. I have not been "officially" diagnosed, however, I have many of the symptoms. Which would be the best board for me to start at?

    Thanks

Well, you can really post anywhere if it's pertinent--i.e. the food and products section if you're inquiring about a certain food, doctors if you're inquiring about a GI, etc.

For testing, pre-diagnosis, symptoms, etc., as the others have said, pre-diagnosis would probably the place to introduce yourself or ask questions.

  2. I like the bread from Charlotte's bakery a lot, but I only tried it at a conference and I think the shipping is ridculous. I recently tried a whole foods bread which was equally good, baked fresh, the best store-bought I've ever tried. I tried Mona's at the conference as well...comes in mix form and it tasted excellent, as well...no bread machine required to make and it's supposedly easy to make. I have the mix, but haven't made or tried to make it yet.

I don't think Chebe is intended to be made for a loaf of bread...bread balls, bread sticks, pizza, etc., but not a full loaf.

So the verdict: Charlotte's is ridiculously priced and Whole Foods has a comparable or better bread in their bakery...that's for pre-made. For mixes (one step higher in difficulty than going to the store and buying it) go with Mona's. And if you're planning on making your own: God bless you.

  3. Someone on the Listserv started this gluten-free restaurant list...anyone can edit it at the links below:

The restaurant wiki is really getting going! It is very exciting to see

the new things that are added every day, and even new countries have

joined in. I have already found several new restaurants to try, some

nationwide and some right in my own backyard.

To find "Lists of lists," organized by state groups, along with links to

restaurant cards and so on, go to this page:

    Open Original Shared Link

For the individual restaurant listings, organized by city, go to this page:

    Open Original Shared Link

The wiki is fun to read, and is great to see the improvements that are

ocurring daily - price ranges have been added, instructions on how to

add information, and new states and additional restaurants keep appearing!

Thanks to Janet and to everyone who is adding information!!!

  4. A negative gene test means that you can be 99.9999999999999% sure that your son isn't celiac--almost guarantee. And that will NOT be affected by age. Because of that, retesting wouldn't really tell you much--because no doctor will diagnose celiac without a gene.

Gluten intolerance can be used synonymously to mean celiac, but can also be when one cannot tolerate gluten (literally: gluten intolerance), but doesn't have celiac. There shouldn't be intestinal damage, but you should still be off of gluten.

  5. Hi people my name is Ben. I am going into sixth grade too. I have been on the diet for a long time. Dragon queen already knows me. I am 10 and I am going to be 11 in October. You can email me if you want to know anything about me.

Now I just have to get a cool avatar.:D

Hey, Ben, are you Mariann's son or are you a different Ben?

Yep...those avatars  ...I started with the waterfall a few weeks after I got here. A few weeks later I changed waterfalls. After a few months, I gave up on trying to find a cute, funny, or interesting avatar.... oh well, I figure that at least people know if they see a waterfall, it's probably me. With some of them, I just see the picture and I don't need to read the name...

Feel free to e-mail me! (that applies to you and anyone else)

  6. I like the Genisoy bars (most aren't gluten-free, though, so you have to check). I've tried the Larabars and I don't mind them--not something I would eat constantly for the pleasure of dates and other dried fruits, but it's not terrible...and that's a pretty good review, me being a picky fourteen-year-old :P

  7. Thank you...I was serious about that, but it's funny all the same

Ha....we go from Crest toothpaste to Trojan condoms over a fifteen post span. If anyone wants the blow-by-blow of the thread (gosh, stupid puns <_< ) it was that some guy noticed that there was some powdery stuff or something on "them." So he would...put "it" on and wash his hands...he said it's not very romantic to have to go wash your hands...someone said that he could have her put "it" on him or whatever...someone else said Trojan...I don't know how the thread developed, but I found other more pertinent posts to follow. This is probably a more serious issue for females, since---damn, I'd better stop. I'm too young to be talking about this

  8. Hey, I live in NYC, also! I'm only 14, but I feel like I have a handle on this diet and I'd love to help you, as well. If you give me a slightly more specific location (neighborhood) I can help you a little more. There are some AMAZING gluten-free bakeries and restaurants downtown (most exclusively or nearly exclusively gluten-free) and there's a restaurant on the Upper West Side just started its gluten-free menu, including maybe ten pasta dishes, homemade bread, brownies, etc. I live on the Upper East Side, so I know most of the health food stores in the area (and the owners, lol  ). There are numerous Whole Foods spread out and some have a gluten-free bakery inside. If you want help with any product replacements (i.e. a good gluten-free pizza or bagel, etc.) ask away here or e-mail me...

Oh, about those restaurants, lol...they're with the GFRAP ( Open Original Shared Link ) and are now catering to the celiacs as a result of the hard work of those people--the list constantly updates, so it's good to have. And here's a post I made on gluten-free in NYC:

    Open Original Shared Link

    and some more on it...

I'm not advocating that you eat out, every meal  ...quite the opposite. But if you find that you're eating m&ms and rice cakes, but you just have no idea what to eat, there are options in NY and we should take advantage of them when necessary. Like I said, e-mail if you need anything--support, product recommendations, help specifically w/ gluten-free in nyc...
