ARCHIVED Birthday Parties And Family Get Togethers.
shai76 replied to shai76's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That is terrible! I can't believe they would say such things. You are better than that. I'm sorry you have to go through such a hard time with your family. -
ARCHIVED Birthday Parties And Family Get Togethers.

That's ok. I had a hard day too. My mom called the clinic where I was getting my allergy shots to "make sure I was ok." When I wasn't there she drove out to that part of town looking for me. I had an anaphelectic reaction last week form the shots, so she is all worried. I'm 30 years old though. She's embarassing me. And it's funny that she will either... -

By the way, when my husband was in a wheel chair for a year people did make rude comments to him like, "that would suck to not be able to walk!" and "I would hate to be like that." He got pushed out of elevators, one woman called him a "gimp." People are rude to everyone I guess, not just us with special dietary requirements. I think they just see life as... -

For us not seeing my family is not an option. I know if it came down to it they would just stop. They are just ignorant and do not know better. They have even made fun of my husband in the past, a disabled veteran, because he shakes really bad all the time from post-traumatic stress disorder. He also has to walk with a cane and a special brace that goes from... -
ARCHIVED Infants' Food Allergies Less Common Than Parents Believe
shai76 replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I also found the article too short and inconcise to really show the public the seriousness of adverse reactions to food. For example, living without wheat and dairy won't kill anyone, even if they are not allergic or intolerant to it. But articles like this tend to give people the impression that their sisters kid who is casein and gluten intolerant is not... -
ARCHIVED Infants' Food Allergies Less Common Than Parents Believe
shai76 replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Our ENT and pediatric gastroenterologist agree that testing is unecessary, and we should go by how we feel our son reacts to the food, not by tests. They say he could turn out allergic to everything on the tests and then we would have a problem, or it could turn out he is allergic to nothing but he could still have reactions to foods. So they ask us to keep... -

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I agree that it is important to include him, but at the same time protect him. I'm just trying to figure out a way we can do both safely and have fun. I usually bring his own food with us so he can eat something safe, of course. I never thought about calling ahead of time and asking what they are having. That's a good... -

Thanks1 I will do that, talk to him like an adult. I never actually sat down and talked to him about his allergies. I figured he's two he might not get it, but you are right. I should really explain to him often why we don't eat the things other people do. Thanks. I appreciate the advice of experience moms. -

Thanks for the ideas. The party is next weekend, so maybe I will go to the health food store and get some more cake mix and make a brand new one for the party for him. You are right though, I need to stop freaking out. He's only two, so I am a new mom, and with him being allergic like me, and I have had lfe threatening reactions, I'm so scared of something... -

My sister-in-law called the other morning and invited us to her daughters 3rd birthday party. I said we would go, and now I am freaked! I had a birthday party for my son yesterday, and we had safe cake and food, but other people ate store bought cake. My son is just 2 but he seemed to notice everyone else had different things to eat. My husband just explains... -
ARCHIVED Irish Oats
shai76 replied to TCA's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm not sure. I'm allergic to oats so the doctor told me I have to stay away from them all. I never thought Irish oats were ay different than any other oats. If I see anything about it I will let you know. -
ARCHIVED Soy Milk And Gas
shai76 replied to shai76's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It's funny that you mention color of food because he will not eat anything red. No straweberries. No cherries. I don't know what his thing is with red, but he will not eat it. Oh, and he says he like everything, but that does not mean he will try it. I put things he hates in front of him and he yells "yummy' then he will just play with it.. I don't force... -
ARCHIVED Auto Immunde Diseases
shai76 replied to Lister's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You would think that gluten intolerance would bea lot like allergies; atopic people who have lots of allergies, which is actually the immune system attacking things it shouldn't all the time, are less likely to have cancer, and other infections, such as the cold and flu. -
ARCHIVED Soy Milk And Gas
shai76 replied to shai76's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
He hasn't shown any signs of gluten intolerance, but he is allergic to wheat. He gets hives and his reflux worsens, and eczema. He eats Rice Chex, which contain malted barely and they haven't caused him any problems. That's the only gluten he eats. I tried giving him bread once and he hated it, so I don't even bother. He eats potatos, rice, rice pasta, stuff... -
ARCHIVED Soy Milk And Gas
shai76 replied to shai76's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thanks for your replys. I think I will take your advice and definitly keep him off the soy milk. I always worried because the rice milk does not have the fat and protein of the cows milk or soy. I always go over his diet with a nutritionist at Children's Hospital and she is always stressing to put oil in his rice milk, but when I tried it he threw it up,... -
My son was on Alimentum RTF the first year of his life, but still had vomiting problems and bowel problems from that. He is allergic to dairy and some of the proteins, even broken down, caused him problems. We tried switching him to soy milk at 1 but he had an allergic reaction. He was on rice milk since and did great. I just made sure he got his fat and...

ARCHIVED Scared, Bad Rash After Eating?
shai76 replied to ebrbetty's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Pesticides can cause ana like reactions too. It could be anything, that's why it's so frustrating. It's good you took the Benadryl. But they could still do a RAST test and have the results within a week no matter what medicines you are taking. I prefer the RAST over the skin prick because I've had anaphelectic reactions to the skin prick, plus you have to... -

ARCHIVED Scared, Bad Rash After Eating?
shai76 replied to ebrbetty's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, you need to eat something. Try sweet potatos, squash, melons, rice, fresh fruit and veggies (not corn). Those things are least likely to cause an allergic reaction. -
ARCHIVED I'm At My Wit's End! Please Help Me...
shai76 replied to zebrabelly's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
When I have a bad allergy attack for a few days later I am in a terrible mood. I feel almost wrathful, so your daughters behavioral changed could very well be from food allergies. I seriously think with her food adversions she should be seen at Children's Hospital by the gastroenterologist, and possibly taken to the feeding clinic. They can be very helpful... -
ARCHIVED Eosiniphilic Disorders
shai76 replied to TCA's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
TCA, my symptoms were very bad reflux/heartburn that did not get a whole lot better with medication, even PPIs twice a day. I had chest pains, swelling in my esophagus that would make things get stuck in there. It always felt like I had something stuck in my throat. So I was always clearing my throat but it didn't help. I choked on liquids a lot, and was... -
ARCHIVED Scared, Bad Rash After Eating?
shai76 replied to ebrbetty's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It does sound serious. Before I've had anaphelectic reactions I get really warm inside, and then feel groggy andbreak out in hives. I would go back to the allergist. -
ARCHIVED Eosiniphilic Disorders
shai76 replied to TCA's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have eosinphilic esophagitis. The scope usually is a no big thing, but I think it depends on what type of sedatives are used to do it. I would seriously talk the experts about your concerns with putting her under. My son has to have it done some day soon, so the GI doc says, but I am also scared of it. He is also suspected to have EE just like his mama... -
Some "experts" say soy oil is safe for people with soy allergies to eat because it does not contain the allergenic proteins. Some people say it can still cross react. I usually do not have a problem with it, but I have on a few occasions.

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Wear A Medical Bracelet?
shai76 replied to lindalee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just had "Food & Drug Allergies" engraved on mine. I have a wallet card that goes into more detail about what I am allergic to, gluten intolerance, asthmatic, what medicines I am on. You want to be as short and specific as you can on the necklace so emergency workers can just glance and know your major medical problems. Celiac disease is very serious...
