I was on the phone with my folks and my mom mentioned that the White House pastry chef of long-term was on the Today show recently mentioning about Bill Clinton's wheat allergy. I did not catch it myself and am not getting anywhere online with it. Does anyone else know more about this?

ARCHIVED Millet And Sorghum
miles2go replied to Tash-n-tail's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I know this is primarily a flours thread, but I just recently bought a packet of whole-grain sorghum from Shiloh Farms and made a pilaf following the recipe on the back. It is absolutely delicious. I've used the sorghum flour, too and it acts a lot like cornmeal. The millet, I don't know. I've tried several recipes for the whole grain and just can't get... -

ARCHIVED Cool Vending Machine Story

Tim, They're Jack Links Open Original Shared Link Steak (Beef?) Nuggets flavored with A-1 sauce. Sorry, I'm on the dino computer at home and the site is spazzing it out. They've got way too many ingredients to be good for you, but I tried a couple of them today and they're not bad for times when I'm not completely prepared. Any day that I can get protein... -
Run away screaming, definitely. I am working in accounting now and playing Damien Rice at the moment. It's a lot better than library work or somesuch. I'd bet you can go back to the horses when you're feeling better.

ARCHIVED Nutritionist From Hospital
miles2go replied to TinkerbellSwt's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I must have the most fantastic nutritionist in the country, I think. Katherine Musgrave. After a slew of "regular" doctors, specialists and alternative physicians, yes, physicians, she was the only one who actually set me on the right track. It's all about finding the right person, no matter their field. Keep hunting! (and you know you're your primary... -
ARCHIVED Cool Vending Machine Story
miles2go replied to miles2go's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
PeggyV and Tritty, I've had similar experiences in both those situations. Texas Roadhouse was the first time I was actually called a celiac, in fact and they were most accomodating with the manager coming out to speak to me personally. Talk about feeling "waited upon" from a former server. Another time I was at a food demonstration/seminar and the chef... -
Here's the link to the thread I found...the toolbar doesn't seem to like me either, but I'm running Windows 95 on dial-up, so it's kind of like rubbing two sticks together just to get the computer started. I googled it. Open Original Shared Link Sorry I didn't provide it previously.

So, it's Tuesday and I'm already hitting up the vending machine at work. I know, I know... I get there and Vending Machine Guy is filling it up with goodies. I almost scared him to death when he didn't hear my first salutation and I just waited for him to finish up. So I said to him, "more gluten-free!" and he said, "oh really? my sister is gluten intolerant...

Just one caveat...celiacs can give blood, given that their condition is under control; there's a thread on this forum from 2004 that I found discussing just this issue. For instance, I can't give blood because my anemia is still not under control and I'll never be able to give anyway because of a bout with scarlet fever I had when I was young. But other...

ARCHIVED Help Me Anyone? Sick And Mystified
miles2go replied to oceangirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm mostly vegetarian and this could be the sinus infection talking, but is it possible to ingest gluten from animals that are fed primarily on gluten? Like farmed salmon? Margaret -
ARCHIVED Help Me Anyone? Sick And Mystified
miles2go replied to oceangirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Lisa, just wanted to say hi from Orono. It sounds like you're going through similar issues as mine since gluten-free for 14 months. Some days are just terrific and then others are not and when we feel used to feeling well, it feels like absolute crapaliciousness. My cat eats gluteny cat food at times and that doesn't seem to bother me, even though I have... -

ARCHIVED Chinese New Year's Menu
miles2go replied to miles2go's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
That's interesting about the "Men in Trees" episode... Here's how I made my steamed buns and wonton/eggroll skins. I do think the bao recipe could use a little tweaking in the future, but they still taste darn good: Bao This is an adaptation of the Frugal Gourmet’s recipe. It makes a lovely Asian hamburger with the addition of bulgogi and optionally, ... -
I have been craving Chinese food since going gluten-free over a year ago, especially the American-Chinese that everyone gets in the restaurants over here. I regularly cook Asian cuisine, especially Japanese and Indian so maybe that’s why it had to be American-Chinese, rather than more authentic fare. Every month or so a real food marathon is on and so t...

ARCHIVED Sun Neen Figh Lok! - Happy New Year!
miles2go replied to GeoffCJ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Geoff, sounds like you're being taken really good care of and I agree that Vietnamese cuisine is very gluten-friendly. We have a Vietnamese lady that brings her wonderful food to our local farmer's market, which happens once a month even throughout the Maine winters. Fish sauce, while a bit of an acquired taste is positively addictive and I have a new... -
ARCHIVED I Did Something Stupid....
miles2go replied to JerryK's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
And don't forget that kamut is an another ancient form of wheat. I was lucky enough to have come across Jax Peters Lowell's advice to "run, not walk" to a nutritionist who gently informed me of those facts even though I wasn't and haven't been medically diagnosed as celiac...although I've done plenty of other stupid things since, not all related to celiac... -
ARCHIVED General Bread Questions
miles2go replied to misoman's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Ditto on Hagmann's French bread recipe! As are most of her others...I'm especially fond of the Touch-o-bean bread recipe for a go-to everyday bread. Her pizza crust recipe is pretty darn good, too. Once you figure out and find all of these different flours, it gets pretty cheap after that if you have some extra time on the weekends and some freezer space... -
ARCHIVED What Is Your Favorite gluten-free Recipe?
miles2go replied to cgilsing's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi Carrie, I tried the Velvet Brownies just tonight, using the pea puree that Bette Hagmann recommended. The house smells just like whirled peas and chocolate, which is an okay thing. They taste really good, but are just about a 1/2 thick. I used 1 whole organic egg and some powdered egg whites...wondering if you've had different results? Mmm.... -

I've had the neti pot for about 8 years now and have never been able to bring myself to use it, although I do suffer the occasional stuffy nose - much less since being gluten-free. Is that really all there is to it? I'm on meds now for the nose, would love love love to get off those, but I think I was scarred by a messy tonsillectomy in the dark ages of...

ARCHIVED Some Urgent Questions.. Please Help
miles2go replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Difficult issues, I agree. I've been wrestling with the same and sorry, had to laugh, maybe because it's January here in Maine and there's just nothing we can do about it. I think that people who want you to be "normal" are not trying to abuse you, they just want you to be well, whatever that means for them, although it's not what means the same for us....
