ARCHIVED Why Do Some People Feel They *must* Have An Endoscopy?
Jestgar replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can easily see your interpretation, but the feeling that I got when I read SSG's post was that as a society we've become less aware that we can take care of ourselves and prevent disease because we've all accepted the idea that drugs would cure anything. I thought the cancer reference was more of an extreme example rather than an assumption on her part... -
There's a ton of stuff in high LD which could be related to some selection, or could be that chromosome just doesn't cross there. The first paper you cited is interesting. They looked at a high ancestral coefcient to determine long haplotype stretches. rs3184504 SH2B3 was the highest with an Fst of .6 (higher than random drift) so they explored that...

ARCHIVED Amazing Self Administered Gluten / Soy Test
Jestgar replied to Tom2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My brother has hypnotized a couple people to the point of allowing them to go through surgery without pain. He said it takes a long time to get a person to that level so it's something that has to be planned for. -
*snort* I pulled them up at work where I can get the whole article, but I won't be able to read them until later this afternoon.

As a geneticist, I disagree.

My guess is that they say a lot of dumb things. This one just happened to have some relevance to you so you actually heard it.

ARCHIVED Amazing Self Administered Gluten / Soy Test
Jestgar replied to Tom2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This sums up my thinking on a lot of alternative medicine. There's a lot of knowledge and unorthodox science out there, and a lot of ways to fix things that aren't part of western medicine. Sadly, there are far more people who are ignorant of the details and only have some idea of the concept. These are the people who give alternative medicine a bad name... -

hmm.....doesn't sound like the kind of thing I'd base my health decisions on.... -
Open Original Shared Link This looks like total fun in food science!! You could try it first with the mixes just to see what the consistencies are, then work on making your own mixes. I would do the bubbling brains with pop rocks, and the bugs with knox blox (is that stuff still around?) Not sure about the barf.....maybe something with tapioca?

ARCHIVED Do Most Cases Of Celiac Begin By Leaky Gut?
Jestgar replied to alicewa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, you said it much better. There is nothing in those grains that you can't get from somewhere else. -
ARCHIVED Do Most Cases Of Celiac Begin By Leaky Gut?
Jestgar replied to alicewa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
How it starts is all speculation - no one really knows for sure. As for healthy grains? I don't think so. There's nothing in wheat, barley or rye that your body needs, they are just cheap fillers..... -

If she is in one of these programs now is as good a time as any to start embracing good communication. Adhering to proper written form is important, as is documenting your sources and providing them for others. The internet and ease of access to information has taken us way beyond the stage of just believing what someone tells you - you have to be able... -

ARCHIVED A Miracle?!? - Change In My Reaction To Gluten
Jestgar replied to lucia's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Feel free to post your sources. I'm at a university with a med school and have online (and paper) access to pretty much all reputable journals and books. Be sure to post them in the order you thought of questions so I can follow your train of thought. -
ARCHIVED A Miracle?!? - Change In My Reaction To Gluten
Jestgar replied to lucia's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Do some Googling. There are med schools that do a combined program of BA/BS MD, accepting kids out of high school. Most programs are 6-8 years. I can't really find any details on how they choose who to weed out over time, so it's a little curious. It is, however, my expectation that anyone fully in the medical portion would be able to use capitalization... -
