ARCHIVED Boarding At My Sister's For A Bit
Jestgar replied to jenngolightly's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Can you start teaching her with play? "Auntie Jenn can't touch bread. Let's wash out hands after we eat so we wash away the bread." "Did you eat some bread? Let's think what you touched and we'll pretend we have to remove a spell from it by washing it off." That sort of thing. Make it a game for her to keep you well. -
ARCHIVED Any Celiacs Who Decided To Be Completely Grain-Free?
Jestgar replied to Evangeline's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thanks for posting those. The Fasono papers talk about Zonulin, but I didn't see which reference talked about the link between intestinal permeability and diabetes. Could you point that one out to me? (the first link didn't open for me at all) -

The relevance of K can be modified by the addition of OH, usually in the form of vodka. The direction of modification (positive or negative) depends on which side of the equation you add the OH to, yours or theirs. -

I spent the night dreaming about conditional probabilities and kinship coefficients. D'ya suppose there's any way I can get credit for this for my class? -

Bad reaction: He takes you to Tahiti. Medium reaction: He takes you to Hawaii. Small reaction: He takes you to Disneyland. Unclear reactions: He pays for your shopping day with the girls. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Associated Sensitivity & Cross Reactive Foods
Jestgar replied to laura4669's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
The best way to find food intolerances is to do an elimination diet. Blood tests might give you an idea, but the way your body reacts is the best indicator. -
ARCHIVED Yellowtail Savignon Blanc Has Gluten?
Jestgar replied to MJ-S's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have no problem with wine or distilled alcohols. I drink single malt scotch, so no chance of contamination through a cheap blend, and all the wines I've tried have been fine (barring that over-indulgence thing). If you, personally, react to something, then by all means remove it from your diet, but don't assume that everyone has the same response. -

You don't think he would go racing off into the greenspace behind my house looking for adventure? I've had like four glasses of wine and it's getting very difficult to keep correcting my typing. I need those chickens to get into their coop so I can go to bed. Guess I'll have another glass while I'm waiting... -

Coyote, eagle, raccoon and roaming dogs. I've been letting them out in the evening when I'm home and I pay pretty close attention to where they are. I've gone out a couple times and found a raccoon snacking on the chicken treats, but leaving the chickens alone. It's not the best situation, but they really like to have a couple hours of free time to destroy... -

They are kind of amusing. I have to keep the door closed or they'll come in the house. And they've dug holes in my neighbours flower bed to snuggle in to, but she's gone so I'm sure it's ok. They come running when they see me, which is kind of cute, and very handy for collecting them out of the neighbour's flower bed.... -
ARCHIVED Does Celiac "define" Who I Am?
Jestgar replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It can define you, or not, as you choose. There is nothing wrong with either decision. Are you a vegetarian? Or do you eat vegetarian? Are you a baker? Or do you bake for a living? Are you a mom? Or do you have kids? I think it's a subtle statement on how you feel something affects who you are. I am a scientist. It is integral to everything... -

aawww. Every year the UW puts up a duck dock on the fountain so the baby ducks can get in and out easily. I've given the happy little chickies an apple to chase around the deck. Gives them something to do, other than paw through my flower pots in hopes of finding something tasty. -

ARCHIVED Did The Blood/stool/urine Tests Today
Jestgar replied to MommaNerd's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You sound like the best mom ever! If you feel they've run all the tests they can possibly run, then you have nothing to lose by controlling his diet and seeing if what he eats is making him ill. Do the gluten-free, dairy-free thing and see if it helps.
