Im in need of a suppourt thread and I hope others are as well. Im hoping to post what I eat, struggles, and accomplishments and of course questions are always welcome.

Today I had-

Breakfast-

2 boiled eggs

2 mangos

Lunch-

Tuna mixed with onions and celery wrapped in lettuce

pomegranate

green beans cooked in olive oil and lemon juice

Dinner-

Chicken noodle soup made with tinkyada pasta with carrots and celery

Snack- 2 Peaches, a little chicken

Im trying to keep a certain level of calories but its hard since Im really limited on my diet of what I can eat. Im trying hard to keep it varied but Im limited. Water is all I drink right now. Im also starting glucophage again due to having pcos. I havent been on it for a while so Im keeping track of my blood sugar as well to make sure it doesnt go to low due to me not eating many carbs anymore.

May I sneak in here? I just want to say that I am studying nutrition, and am willing to help anyone, or offer advice. I can leave if you want!

AutumnE, good luck with your diet.

I need to loose weight too. And I say this after eating chips and a couple of meat patties for my tea, along with some marsmallows and a fizzy drink. As you can guess, this is my rest day where I try not to be too strict on myself. I do it about once a week.

I have found it so hard to loose weight since being gluten free, but I am forever trying and watching what I eat. In having said that, I don't seem to have put on any weight.

Of late I am trying low carbs and mainly fruit and veges and meat etc, being very careful about rice and breads and cakes and I should watch potatoes too, but they are probably my weakness just now.

I weigh in at 82 kilos and fast approaching 50 and I don't want to enter the next decade being overweight! A couple of years back I had managed to reduce from 90 kilos, so I know I can do it, but it is so dang hard!

If we are all to list what we have eaten, this will make quite a hefthy thread in no time, and as it is I write it all down in my journal. But in having said that, it probably is good to know what other people are eating as it can be inspirational. Maybe we could buddy up with someone, and support each other.

For breakfast, I had custard and a banana.

Morning tea, 1 peach, 2 apricots.

Lunch mashed potato, sausage, pumpkin and peas and another banana. (must not eat too many of them)

Afternoon tea, handful of marshmallows, a small handful of vege crisps, drink of gingerbeer.

Tea serving of chips and a couple of pork patties. Total calories according to my estimation 1700. Not too bad.

Hey, I am liking this idea of writing down what I eat, maybe tomorrow I will take extra care with food, so I don't have that cringe feeling when I admit what I have eaten.

Good idea AutumnE

Well if you are talking to me you are welcome to give advise if you want, but I do have to warn you lol!! I have had weight issues for years and because of my celiac messing up my motabolism (from starving myself in sickness to gorging because I know I'll be sick again soon) Celiac has really done a number on me. I know I need to eat smaller better balanced meals but right now I'm trying to do the best I can. I love to hear advice, but don't be surprised if I tell you I've been there and done that and it didn't work for me lol!! I can't wait until spring when I can get out and ride bikes, and roller blade with my kids :)

Angie - the less you eat, the more your body thinks that it is 'starving' itself. You are hardly eating, so your body is holding onto what it can, and almost (if not already) reverting to starvation mode. It's hoarding everything it can to keep you functioning.

Your body is telling you this as you ARE starving, but also, you NEED to balance proteins, complex carbohydrates and good fats for optimal health and weight loss. (Combined with exercise, but you already mentioned that). This is definitely imperative.

Lorka, I understand that eating not enough will send the body into starvation mode.

What is the minimum amount of calories to eat. I try to eat between 1200 and 1500. I have not seen any weight loss for about 2 years, as at times I even go up to 2000. I will not dare go below 1200 because of what you say.

But then, what if I, or someone else is falling too low in dietary intake, how can I increase what I am am eating safely without putting too much more weight on? It is a balancing act I know. Maybe I am eating not enough? I could be wrong on my assumption.

Thanks

Cathy

Hi Cathy,

you're right - there is a lot to think about and a lot to remember.

My first question would be to you are, are you exercising?

If yes, my second is, are you strength training?

After that, there is a lot to consider. I am not sure if you are eating an ideal amount for you, as I don't know your height, weight, bone structure, activity level, and so on.

You can figure out your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) with a site like this: Open Original Shared Link. Those are the calories that you need per day just for your body to function. Use that number to apply this: Open Original Shared Link, for how much you will burn.

As I mentioned above, where the calories come from is important too. You cannot eat 2000 calories of one thing - you really need to balance complex carbs, good fats, and proteins.

I can help you more if you'd like, I just need a little more info!

Hope this helps for now.

Cathy- Hello! Nice meal plans for the day previously. It looks good. I cheat once in a while too but it seems to take a good couple of days due to bloating to get back to where I was so I try to limit it as much as possible. I would try either low carb veggies ( meaning veggies besides carrots, peas, corn, and potatoes) or high protein foods such as chicken, turkey or maybe fish or avocado as a supplement for more calories.

Shannon- Hi! Your meals look good too, I dont like breakfast either boiled eggs are rare in my diet. I usually just have a brunch. Im too shy to post my weight  But I will come around soon :)

Liz- Hello! Of course you can join the more the merrier!

Angie- Hi! My mom has killed her metabolism and she exercises about 30 minutes a day. Very low carb and very balanced but she is still 40 lbs heavier than she was. She starved herself for years by low calorie dieting so the dr seems to think it hasnt come back yet. I know where you are coming from. I did that to myself in my early teen years. Being on the pom squad and always feeling insecure in the snug uniforms I didnt eat much at all. It did a doozy on my metabolism but I believe its up to par more so. I also take glucophage which helps quite a bit with weight loss because it balances your insulin levels. Chromium and cinnamon work well with leveling I have heard.

Lorka- Hello! I always welcome advice and tips and Im glad you could join us.

Sorry I havent had a chance to post before 9 pm but my munchkin was in the dr's and has a virus with a high fever so I have been busy today.

Today was OK for food not great though-

Brunch- I had a big chicken salad today with a bowl of chicken noodle soup from yesterday. I had four peaches today with it. I waited too long without food and was starving.

Dinner- Turkey patties with cauliflower

Snack- some mixed nuts and another peach

Not much today at all, I need to eat again still before bed. I didnt have time to eat today.

My water intake was only about 30 ozs so quite a way from my normal 96 ozs I like to get but I will still be up for a few more hours.

Usually I do my walk away the pounds tape and tonight I was too tired. And Ashley is asleep so its not possible for tonight now. When I wake up tomorrow I hope to get it in though after breakfast.

I also didnt have much of an appetite, my sister found out two things today at the dr's office. One she has a inguinal hernia and needs to get it fixed and two they found two lumps near her armpit and the lymph nodes are swollen a bit so they are checking it out with an u/s. Other than that I am doing good. I was able to get in my romance novel reading which I havent done for awhile so its been a peaceful night.

I hope you all had a good day :)

Okay, I think I'll start posting my meals tomorrow - I can't even remember what I ate today -it's been a long one and I'll be ready for bed soon. I was at the doctor's today and just flat out told her that I'd gained weight because I've discovered all these really yummy gluten-free recipes and I love to cook and bake and I've overdone it. This is my downfall - I love eating the treats I make for my kids.

I'm a PE and health teacher and get adequate exercise, although I should get more, and I totally understand nutrition - I'm just weak when it comes to cookies, bread, etc. I keep telling myself that I'm going to get off the high carb thing and then sabotage myself by making cookies "for my kids". I end up eating too many. So now I've admitted it. I have 32 pounds to lose to get down to what my driver's license says I weigh - so that's my goal. I'd like to at least be close by the 4th of July. The only way I can lose weight is to eat enough protein, lots of vegies, small amounts of fruit and limited amounts of starches. And exercise moderately 5-6 days a week (walking, jogging, bike riding).

I hope this thread motivates me to be accountable and get started!

B:Stewed rhubarb with yoghurt

L: banana, peach, plum

T: Boiled potato, 2 chicken drumsticks, salad, peas. Dessert 100g icecream with stewd apricots.

Quite a light day, estimated to be 1000 cals, even with the icecream.

Spent most of the day up in the emergency room with husband who has not been well lately. He came back smiling and feeling better, relieved that it is not heart related as suggested by his doctor this morning. He went in because he has been feeling rotten this week with no energy and things just got worse with him being told to go up to the er because his ecg was a little suspect in the doctors rooms. There is a possibility he had a minor heart attack a while back, but nothing to do with how he felt now.

But what is it? The report came back slightly bloated with tummy pains, but no answer. I just put it to him it is a gluten intolerance. And he bit the bullet and said he might give it a go. He already wants to cut back on cholestrol as his is creeping up. Have I got a convert? But you never know his relux might dissappear being gluten free and his bloatedness might go too.

So it has been one of those hard days, but all is okay and he is feeling better and starting to eat again and his energy is coming back. His family history is on his side, no heart problems there.

Shannon, only 3 bars, I would've had the whole packet!

You're doing fine. I'm lucky it is summer and I am not as hungry, and will in a minute eat some strawberries.

While eating gluten before dx, like a lot of people I found a diet impossible as I was always hungry. It felt that the rules were not written for my body as I was always hungry and thought I was just a pig. So for years I felt I had no will power. It was hard on me mentally. But cutting out gluten, I found I was not as hungry, I had a bit more control over my body and so much more control over what I ate, but it still seemed the more gluten-free bread and cakes I ate, the more I would get the old hunger back. So I try to avoid those types of things, and I find I can manage my eating better, don't get as hungry as quickly and hopefully, I will loose the weight.

Lonewolf- Hello and Welcome! I know the enjoyment of baking also my dh gets big sweet cravings. Its hard not eating it when I make it and have to smell it.

Cathy- Im sorry to hear about your husband :( Has he had his gall bladder checked out? mine started out slowly like that. It was barely functioning. It could be celiac also you never know. It would be a healthier diet for him anyways if he would stick to it. I had an ekg done before I had my gallbladder out at my dr's office and it came back slightly funny but he said that ekg's are not an accurate science alot of times and you need to look at a few of them or get an u/s of the heart to truly determine if there is a problem.

Shannon- Im sorry your kids are sick too, I know the feeling. Im going on very little sleep lately myself. Congrats on the weight loss!

Today I did not do so hot :(

Brunch again( skipped breakfast basically)- chicken wrapped in lettuce with olive oil and lemon juice with a touch of garlic.

Dinner- Vegetable beef soup- Very good except I ate something Im not supposed to, potatoes and tomatoes and had asthma problems <_<

Snack ( big oops)-6 lara bars ( basically 1200 calories right there) but oh so tasty. That was my screw up but they are so healthy for you and soooo tasty. Two virgil's root beers ( lots more calories)

Hardly any water today so Im upping it tonight. Today did go better as my daughter's fever broke and she is starting to act like herself again but still being picky on eating. I had an errand running day so she stayed at home with her dad. Needless to say when he had to go to work tonight he didnt mind lol. He was being very patient with her but he cant handle much whining.

Breakfast today- 16 ozs of water and 2 lara bars

( Lunch and Dinner I have not ate yet but this is the menu plan)

Lunch- turkey, cauliflower, and probably a salad.

Dinner- Dh and my daughter are wanting gluten-free pizza so I will probably have leftovers from lunch.

Not an exciting meal day but today Im eating more for nutrition than taste, Im just not in the mood for eating anything today.

My daughter stayed up till 12am last night! Her and dh are still sleeping so Im getting things done easily before she gets up. But Im paying for less than 6 hours of sleep!

Im not sure if I will be on here later on today or tomorrow. Dh is home for the weekend and he usually is a hog on the computer . Also today we are getting our taxes done, Saturday is my baking bread day and any kind of treat dh wants. Usually peanut butter chocolate chip cookies.

I hope everyone has a good weekend :)

Hi everyone! I'd like to join. I have a problem bingeing on sweets because before I went gluten-free (and for most of the months after it), I couldn't handle any dairy and only the slightest bit of fat, so I hadn't had any desserts in several years. Now it is hard for me to not eat thousands of calories in one sitting if I allow myself even one bite. Because I know this, I won't be having any sweets, beyond Dove dark chocolate squares which are something I have no interest in bingeing on, unless it's a pre-set "cheat" night once a month (once a month because eating 2000 calories at a time really messes up your calorie averages for the week if done once a week).

Workouts: I do 5-6 cardio sessions a week of 30-60 min. each, plus at least one full-body weights session of about an hour. I'm aiming for 1700-1800 calorie averages over a week. A little more a day is ok, but I know I cannot have an average of more than 1800 a week to lose.

So far today:

coffee with coffeemate, bob's red mill gluten-free hot cereal with 1/2 c. soymilk and 1/3 c. blueberries, medium grapefruit, 2 dove dark chocolates (450)

turkey breast, homemade sundried tomato hummus, romaine lettuce on 2 mission white corn tortillas, 1 dark chocolate (375)

chicken breast marinated in a lime-garlic-cumin mix, green beans and a potato, fruit salad (drained & rinsed mandarin oranges, pineapple & peaches), 2 dark chocolates (700)

soymilk and kahlua "milkshake", a few skittles (350)

Total = ~1900.

A little high, but I'm working on it... :) Also, very few veggies, which is not ok...

Were you super hungry or just tempted? Lara bars aren't horrible for you, but they have no protein - all they are are carbs (from all the sugar in dried fruit) and fats (from nuts). I bet something with protein would have satisfied you more. I love lara bars, so I understand the temptation!

Cathy- Im sorry to hear about your husband

AutumnE, thanks for that. He is feeling better. We were so worried it was heart problems, but that appears to be okay, all he is left with is feeling weak and with incessant burping. His appetite is back, but he is not eating gluten. I'm a bad influence! He does have reflux and asthma. I looked up on the net about burping and it says could be stress, an ulcer or gall bladder things. We will have to keep looking for answers. He's a worrier! which makes me worry.

AutumnE, sorry that you've had a bad food day. But hang in there it will come right. Winter is a hard time to loose weight and stick to the regime. Mind you summer here has been hard for me non the less.

Yestereday was a good day, quietly at home.

B: Yoghurt, low fat with stewed apricots

MT: Peach

L: Salad, beetroot, apricot, plum, apple, banana, strawberried, peach

T: Potato, corn on cob, scrambled eggs, strawberries with custard and to top it all off a diet lemonade.

About 1200 calories today, and I walked 8549 steps which is not much is it? Too much watching Rugby Sevens on the tele. Back to work on Tuesday and then the steps will go up.

I'm no gourmet cook, and usually just go with what is in the cupboard.

I'm making the most of all the fresh produce around. Fruit has never been a problem for me apart from money wise.

Emcmaster, that is a wonderful idea about one 2,000 calorie binge in a month, it sounds better than my once a week binge. Can this 2,000 cal binge be in one meal, or just no more than 2,000 for that day? I hope it is in one sitting, as I still have a bit of a binge personality. If I start eating chocolate, or crisps, they have to be finished, or else I worry about them till I have finished eating them. It is fatal for the scales and how I feel.

The binges once a month can neatly fit in with the celebrations that occur over the year, shucks that means even more planning! But I am already counting down the next food onslaught.

Happy eating everyone

Cathy

Okay, I'm a little slow about this ... how do you figure out callories on things like fruits and veggies ... none are the same size.

And what about things like scrambled eggs, especially when you put things like onions, mushrooms etc in it. I use skim milk, but some times put a slice of low fat cheese in as well.

I don't have a callorie book or anything of that sort, I just never can figure out how you can look at what you are eating and say ... this holds so many callories. Do you have to measure every thing?

I notice that one slice of Kinnikinnick bread is considered a serving at 170 callories ... hello :o does anyone make a sandwich with one slice of bread

I think that's why some of us don't diet, it's too much work to figure out how many callories we're eating  Just kidding, but it is a pain.

So ... is there an easy way??????

Hi , since being gluten free I am still having bad stomach problems . Such as constant gas in my stomach 24/7 ,burning, constant bubbling noises coming from my stomach and gurgling sounds that never stop .Pain under the left side of my rib cage when ever I eat and just always there’s pain there  .  My symptoms have not improved at all since being gluten free.  Could this be refractory coeliac disease ?? How is that even diagnosed or confirmed  ?  I had tests recently and this is what they say :Endomysial abs (IgA) -Positive  TTG abs (IgA)U/ml : My result is : 0.9 U/ml The Range:0 - 10 U/ml What does this mean pls ??? How can I still test positive for Endomysial abs when I am gluten free and am very careful about cross contamination? Do I even have coeliac disease I’m convinced some other digestive disorder is causing these symptoms .   I also have not had a endoscopy and now the gastroenterologist calls me after one year ( I’m from the uk and have free healthcare which has been such a nightmare with all this and never help me  )  so as I am gluten free the gastroenterologist advised me to start eating gluten again to be referred for a biopsy .. Is a biopsy even worth me doing ? The only proof I have is when I was eating gluten I could never get my ferretin , vitamin d and folate levels up . And since being gluten free these have gone up a little bit  . But that doesn’t always mean coeliac as I know gluten stops absorption in even normal people  . Pls can anyone shed some light it’s much needed ! And share some advice or answer my questions above . I have no idea with this whole coeliac stuff and am very much struggling .Much Appreciated .
