I Bought A Gf Donut At Wf Yesterday!

It has been YEARS since I've had a donut. Every Sunday at church, there are boxes of Krispy Kremes lined up in the back of Sunday School class and it kills me...I can smell how fresh they are. *sigh* It's one of the few things that I miss terribly and have not found an alternative for.

So yesterday I'm at Whole Foods, getting my gluten-free Prairie Bread and gluten-free Blueberry Muffins, when lo and behold - I see a basket of gluten-free donuts in single packages! They were cake donuts (not the yeast kind of course) and they were a beautiful golden brown, with a lovely creamy glaze on them. Oh, they looked so divine. I put several in my basket, as I squealed with excitement. I could hardly wait to wake up this morning and have breakfast!

I jump out of bed (an hour early, mind you!) and get my coffee started. As the pot gurgles and pops, I open my donut package and the sweet smell wafted out. My mouth was watering. I force myself to wait until the coffee is done. Can't have donuts without the coffee. I pour myself a perfect cup of Ethiopian brew with two Splenda and a touch of toffee cream. Hot sips scalding my tongue, but the anticipation of having a donut drives away any pain. Tentatively, like a first-time lover I pick up my donut, pausing before I nibble into the sweet glaze, thanking God for such a wonderful delicacy. And then I take my first bite...into a brick of hard and crumbly sand castle of a pastry. The flavor is of sweaty socks dipped in a flea bath. :(

Oh...the disappointment. I feel like a jilted lover the morning after. I wish I'd just stuck with the coffee.

*heavy sigh*

Sharon, no they weren't Kinnikinick. They were from Nutrilicious Natural Bakery. I guess there's a difference between NUTRAlicious and DElicious.

Thanks Tiffany. I'm not a writer by trade, but have loved writing since a journalism class in high school. I'm a photographer in real life. This was just my attempt at making a gloomy experience funny. Takes the sting out of the disappointment. :)

Hi Andy,

Okay...first of all...you are Hillarious!!! You sound alot like me. The donuts at church are always wonderful to look at and to smell, such a shame!! :(

Here's one for you..talk about dissapointment....

We were at a meeting last night that lasted about 2 1/2 hours. We hadn't eaten dinner and I was starving. After the meeting the hostess announces that there is coffee, tea, and dessert. She removes a towel covering the desserts and this gorgeous chocolate cake is there. Ahhhh....Every one digs in of course, except me. The hostess asks if I want any and I expain why I can't have it. She says

"Oh, I didn't make the cake I ordered it from a neighbor who uses all natural ingredients. I think she said she's the same thing as you...a celiac?, and that the cake is made with some special flour, but I can't remember"

Arggggg!!!!! <_<

YOU CAN"T REMEMBER????!!! So obviously I couldn't risk it, not without knowing for sure. I am extremely sensitive. If she was wrong, even one bite and I would have been excruciatingly ill. Oh Well

But life is good, Wendy

I was thinking about getting that book, could I ask if it has info about blood type, genetics, etc?

Thanks,

This thread is hysterical! I can so understand your disappointment.

I am craving Krispy Kreme like crazy...and I'm pregnant...so it's REALLY intense!

I got the Kinnikinnick, but they just didn't cut it...not bad, just not what I wanted.

Then, this week, the ladies at work brought in a dozen Dunkin' Donuts (similar to Krispy Kreme). Of course I didn't eat any, but when no one was in the break room, I would walk in and lift the lid and sniff (just fanning the lid and that delicious smell). I'm almost embarrassed to admitt that I did this at least four times that day! :D

I truly feel your sorrow! ;)

Okay, I finally tried the Kinnikinnick chocolate glazed donuts. Pretty decent. I've never been a big cake donut fan, but I think I'll just have to get used to it. I've heard the chocolate dipped are even better, so I'll have to give those a whirl sometime. But they are much better than Nutralicious. Not that that takes much. God those were terrible!

Open Original Shared Link As posted above, this bakery (totally gluten-free) does have donuts. They are not bad at all, my first gluten-free food. I have to admit that they are better fresh than a few days old or out of the freezer. It might be worth a try if you want a donut.

In the study linked above, the little girl switched to a gluten free diet and gained enough weight that that fat pad was replenished and surgery was not needed.   Here's the full article link... Hello, @Jordan Carlson, So glad you're feeling better.   Tecta is a proton pump inhibitor.  PPI's also interfere with the production of the intrinsic factor needed to absorb Vitamin B12.  Increasing the amount of B12 you supplement has helped overcome the lack of intrinsic factor needed to absorb B12. Proton pump inhibitors also reduce the production of digestive juices (stomach acids).  This results in foods not being digested thoroughly.  If foods are not digested sufficiently, the vitamins and other nutrients aren't released from the food, and the body cannot absorb them.  This sets up a vicious cycle. Acid reflux and Gerd are actually symptoms of producing too little stomach acid.  Insufficient stomach acid production is seen with Thiamine and Niacin deficiencies.  PPI's like Tecta also block the transporters that pull Thiamine into cells, preventing absorption of thiamine.  Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are difficulty swallowing, gagging, problems with food texture, dysphagia. Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are symptoms of ADHD and anxiety.  Vyvanse also blocks thiamine transporters contributing further to Thiamine deficiency.  Pristiq has been shown to work better if thiamine is supplemented at the same time because thiamine is needed to make serotonin.  Doctors don't recognize anxiety and depression and adult onset ADHD as early symptoms of Thiamine deficiency. Stomach acid is needed to digest Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in fruits and vegetables.  Ascorbic acid left undigested can cause intestinal upsets, anxiety, and heart palpitations.   Yes, a child can be born with nutritional deficiencies if the parents were deficient.  Parents who are thiamine deficient have offspring with fewer thiamine transporters on cell surfaces, making thiamine deficiency easier to develop in the children.  A person can struggle along for years with subclinical vitamin deficiencies.  Been here, done this.  Please consider supplementing with Thiamine in the form TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) which helps immensely with dysphagia and neurological symptoms like anxiety, depression, and ADHD symptoms.  Benfotiamine helps with improving intestinal health.  A B Complex and NeuroMag (a magnesium supplement), and Vitamin D are needed also.

@pothosqueen, Welcome to the tribe! You'll want to get checked for nutritional deficiencies and start on supplementation of B vitamins, especially Thiamine Vitamin B 1.   There's some scientific evidence that the fat pad that buffers the aorta which disappears in SMA is caused by deficiency in Thiamine.   In Thiamine deficiency, the body burns its stored fat as a source of fuel.  That fat pad between the aorta and digestive system gets used as fuel, too. Ask for an Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test to look for thiamine deficiency.  Correction of thiamine deficiency can help restore that fat pad.   Best wishes for your recovery!   Interesting Reading: Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome in a 6-Year-Old Girl with Final Diagnosis of Celiac Disease https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31089433/#:~:text=Affiliations,tissue and results in SMAS.

Wow! You're pretty young to have a diagnosis of SMA syndrome. But youth also has its advantages when it comes to healing, without a doubt. You might be surprised to find out how your health improves and how much better you feel once you eliminate gluten from your diet. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that, when gluten is consumed, triggers an attack on the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestines where all our nutrition is absorbed. It is made up of billions of tiny finger-like projections that create a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the person with celiac disease, unchecked gluten consumption generates inflammation that wears down these fingers and, over time, greatly reduces the nutrient absorbing efficiency of the small bowel lining. This can generate a whole host of other nutrient deficiency related medical problems. We also now know that the autoimmune reaction to gluten is not necessarily limited to the lining of the small bowel such that celiac disease can damage other body systems and organs such as the liver and the joints and cause neurological problems.  It can take around two years for the villous lining to completely heal but most people start feeling better well before then. It's also important to realize that celiac disease can cause intolerance to some other foods whose protein structures are similar to gluten. Chief among them are dairy and oats but also eggs, corn and soy. Just keep that in mind.
