Endoscopy Question

Deaminated Marcus

Deaminated Marcus Apprentice

I was expecting the endoscopy to be scary and painful and the colosnoscopy to be a breeze,

but it was the reverse.

About the endoscopy, after it was done and they started the colonoscopy I had the urge to cough

as if I had some droplet in my throat or lungs.

Has anyone else had the urge to cough after an upper endoscopy,

within minutes and into hours after?

I was asleep for the whole thing.

I was also asleep for the procedure, but my throat was sore for a few days.

I haven't had an endoscopy yet myself (it's happening in a couple days), but after my daughter's endoscopy they told me it was normal for her to wake up coughing. She had general anesthesia, though, so I'm not sure if that's typical with other types of sedation too. She did not in fact cough much or complain about a sore throat, but from the way the nurse warned me about it, I definitely got the impression that a lot of people cough after endoscopies. They even warned me that she might cough so much that she'd throw up! But fortunately that didn't happen.

Thank you greenbeanie,  I'm reassured now.

Did the nurse say how long it would last.

I still felt an itch to cough today.

I wish the preop nurse would have told me that beforehand

or that I had been told by the procedure nurse.

I saw the a bit on the TV  but not much as I was in and out of consciousness.

Some said in the forum that  the upper endoscopie was painful, but I barely had a sore throat after.

I woke up during the colonoscopy coughing from the prior endoscopy.

The colonoscopy was able to check into my ileum part of the small intestine.

Best of luck with your upcoming endoscopy.

I had the urge to cough for about a day after my first endo -- subsequent endos I had different sleepy cocktail because we discovered an allergy to one used during the first endo.

Needing to cough or being a bit sore in the throat is to be expected -- they did send something foreign down there for the look around.

notme Experienced

when i had my endo, they said i would probably have a sore throat for a couple of days, and that i might feel like i have a 'tickle' in my throat.  all normal, they said.  i didn't really even have a sore throat (wolfed down a turkey sandwich as soon as we got home lolz)

glad you finally had your tests, marcus - boy, they sure make you wait long enough!

Marcus, I should've asked earlier, did they tell you anything after the procedure?  How long until you get your results?  Hope you're feeling better  :)

Deaminated Marcus Apprentice

Thank you GottaSki and notme! for confirming about the next day cough and throat tickle.
I'm not sure why it makes my lungs feel wet and itchy
but I seem ok this evening.

I dreaded seeing that gastroenterologist as he was very dismissive during the initial pre consult but my PCP had insisted that I see him because he does a seperate pre consult in the month prior
vs the others who don't bother anymore.

Also I didn't mind waiting as it gave me a chance to get some gluten in me after having been gluten free for 2 years.

The other nice thing about this gastroenterologist is that the hospital he uses is very very clean compared to the other dumps I've been to in my city.

And the staff were friendly in a professional manner.

First I had a consult with a nurse who asked questions and then she explained the procedures with diagrams on boards.
She inserted a needle line in.

Then I waited a long time with others in a waiting room.
There were several doctors doing the procedures.
Then I was called by my gastroenterologist's nurse.
She took me to the exam room and she explained a bit more.
Then she sprayed my throat and she attached the drug tube to the previously inserted needle and she explained what I was to do.
Then the doctor came in and we had a very brief exchange.
He was in good mood for a change.

First they did the upper endoscopy but I don't remember anything.
Then when I was getting the colonoscopy I started to get the wet cough.
I do remember seeing images about 3 times on the TV but I didn't know what I was seeing and I fell back to sleep.

Later during the colonoscopy, I felt huge pains like I had a broom stick moving around and I moaned.
During the second moan they must have cranked up the drug as I fell back asleep and later I woke up in the recovery room where another nurse was talking to me.

After the recovery room recovery, I got dressed and I was sent to get my driver-friend and then we went to see the doctor.

Powerofpositivethinking:

He said he didn't see anything in the upper endoscopy.
This surprised me as I've been having heat behind the sternum and and breathing problems and my PCP suspected GERD or reflux.

The gastroenterologist had given me some drug to take for that in the month ago preconsult but I didn't want to take it till I get a diagnosis after scoping.

I asked and he said he took 6 samples for Celiac.

He was visibly concerned at finding some small ulcers in the ileum.
He asked about my NSAID use which I hardly use and he said it could be Crohns.
He told me not to take any aspirin for my heart.
Ironically at the pre-consult over a month ago he denied I could have Crohns.

He said it will take 5 weeks for the pathologists report to be ready
so I think his report will be after that.

He was rushed for the next procedure and he left.

I had a big meal last night.
Last night my left groin was sore and aching.
My belly feels bloated and sore now but that could be the 4 hot dogs and the bread and the salad.

I was planning to go gluten free after my intestines were cleaned out but last week the lab technician did the wrong test.
She did the DGP-IgA and my PCP ordered the DGP-IgG so I'm back on gluten (whole wheat and gluten hot dogs) till I can get that test redone.

Thank you for your support.

Sorry your results will take so long...but glad you were finally able to complete the double ender ;)

Do be sure to get written or electronic copies of both pathology and procedural reports.

Hope you are feeling better tomorrow :)

powerofpositivethinking Community Regular

hope you're feeling better this morning!  any idea on how much longer you'll have to wait for the DGP-IgG test?  After that, have you had all necessary tests done that you can go gluten free?  I hope so!

thank you for sharing your experience - it is helpful to others who may not know what to expect.  i was asleep through mine, so i could not tell anything they did after they knocked me out.  i hope they can get you in for the last testing soon!

freeme808 Apprentice

Thank you for sharing...Im still not sure what to expect. I hope it goes as smoothly as yours. I had to wait a month for my consult-which is now next Friday(Halelujah!!! :D ). The last 3 weeks have sucked! BUT, it will only be the consult. Im hoping that he'll listen to me and get me in for the procedures not too long after. I don't know if I can wait another month. :(

Deaminated Marcus Apprentice

GottaSki, yes I will do.

My PCP gives me copies but I'm not sure if it will include the pathologist's report.

I'll have to find out where to get it if my PCP doesn't have it.

powerofpositivethinking,

I was told by the gastroenterologist to eat bread for another 4 to 6 weeks as I was off it for 3 days.

I'm not sure about this as I was sore already from eating the hotdogs and the bread yesterday.

I got a letter from my PCP to tell the lab they made mistake so I don't have to pay for the test again.

Thank you notme!

Best of luck freeme808.

Thank you for saying that. That doctor diagnosed me with IBS with no follow-up so the relationship is already concluded. If I pursue diagnosis further I'll request someone else.
    • Rejoicephd
Hey everyone. Thanks again for your suggestions. I wanted to give an update and ask for some follow-up suggestions from you all.  So I did go through all of my food items and stopped eating things that were “gluten free” and switched over to the “certified gluten free” ones (the ones with the g symbol). I also stayed away from restaurants except once and there I ordered something raw vegan and gluten free hoping for the best. I also stayed away from oats and soy and dairy. I've also been increasing my vitamin B complex. I've been doing this for about 12 days and while I know that's not that long, I'm still getting sick. Sometimes having diarrhea. Sometimes getting headaches and having necklaces. Sometimes waking up feeling horrible brain fog. I did go to my GI doc and they did a blood test and found my TtG-IgA was in the negative range (and a lower number than I'd had before). I also had normal levels of CRP. My stool showed no elevation of calprotectin and no pathogens. My GI doc said the symptoms could be related to a gluten exposure or to IBS. I'm keeping a food diary to see if I can narrow down whats going on. I know I have good days and bad days and Im trying to isolate what makes a good day versus a bad day. Generally so far it looks like if it eat something super cautious like raw vegetables that I chopped myself into a salad and almonds, im fine but if I eat something more complex including, say, chicken and rice (even if packaged and certified gluten free or made by me with gluten free ingredients), it may not go so well. I may end up with either a headache, neck tension, brain fog, and/or diarrhea that day or the morning after. Any other thoughts or suggestions? I am planning to start tracking my foods again but I wanted to do it in more detail this time (maybe down to the ingredient level) so are there any common ingredients that celiacs have issues with that you all know of that I should track? I've got dairy, oats, soy, eggs, corn, peas, lentils on my “watch list”. Other things I should add? I'm hoping if I track for another two weeks I can maybe pin down some sensitivities. Appreciate the help and tips. Thank you so much!!

"My GI doctor ruled out gluten celiac entirely because I didn't have skin rash." Are you serious? The overwhelming majority of people with confirmed celiac disease do not have the rash. It's called dermatitis herpetiformis. It is found in only about 10-15% of those with celiac disease: https://www.celiac.ca/gluten-related-disorders/dermatitis-herpetiformis/ If your GI doc is operating on that piece of misinformation, I would start looking for a new GI doc because I wouldn't trust him/her in general.

Thank you so much for your informative reply. My GI doctor ruled out gluten celiac entirely because I didn't have skin rash. I had a histamine response to wheat and milk by scratch test by an allergist. I'm not always symptomatic but the older I get the worse it gets. I've found through trial and error that I can react to all grains. Buckwheat and corn included. I tolerate some rice but I wouldn't want to eat it every day. Potato is pretty good for me but I can't eat it every day either. I compromise with squash. I tolerate it well. The Best I feel is while fasting. When I'm in pain and discomfort it's easy to fast even long term, it helps. The problem I'm having is I'm great with my diet for 3-6 months then I start to cheat again. When I don't get immediate symptoms I get this foolish false security. I react then go back to my diet. Rinse and repeat. I suppose discipline is my real issue. I'm very tired of perusing a diagnosis. The constant gaslighting and dismissal is exhausting. Thanks for your suggestion of the autoimmune protocol. I will give it a try. Perhaps the guidelines will help me to navigate better.   Thanks again.
