Cleaning Out The Pantry - What Containers Can Be Re-Used?

I found out that I am gluten-intolerant and for the past two months have been following a gluten-free diet. My pantry was in a big need of a cleaning and today my Mom and I filled 6 garbage bags full of gluten containing items that had expired and old flours that I would never use again.

I now have a bunch of canning jars and other larger glass canisters that I have washed out with dish soap and a brush and then put through the dishwasher. Some of these containers had wheat flours in them and other gluten containing items. Can these containers be used again now that they have been washed or should I be replacing them with brand new containers? They are still good canisters but if I cannot use them, then I will sell them and buy new ones. They are many, many of them.

Thanks again.

Glass cleans very well. You should be fine. It's hard to find nice glass one these days.

From what I've read, glass and metal are fine as long as they've been cleaned well.  I just tossed out plastic and non-stick stuff (so long Tupperware!)

It is hard to find nice glass.  Consumer Reports recommends buying old Pyrex and Corningware from second-hand stores.  Newer products have been "exploding" when pulled from the oven and set on top of a stove (decrease in quality -- cheaper materials).  Happened to my neighbor!  Her dinner was ruined and thankfully no one was hurt.

They also recommend buying old sewing machines.  Makes me feel good to know that "older" is better!

Thanks so much everyone! It's great to know that I don't need to get rid of all of my glass canisters.

I just did them same thing, my husband just informed me he would go gluten free, so as not to take a chance on me being cc'd.  I appreciate that.  I emptied out everything, like you I kept any good glass containers.  I washed them very well by hand, then put them in the dishwasher.   Great advise on this site,  It has helped me an awfull lot.    Happy 4th.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
